Anyone Had Experience with Using Google Ad Words?

Hi OzB.

Business operators, has anyone had experience with using ad words to grow/expand your business? Were the benefits worth the cost? What was the total cost for x amount of exposure?

Google recommended spending $270 a month to get onto the first page. I have a friend who spends $5k - $10k per month to be first and it grew the business to operate roughly 1-2mill a year in generated income. I do understand there are many varying factors but I am just trying to get a consensus

  • Correlation does not imply causation.

    • It does if you have to ask for business help on OZ Bargain.

  • What are you selling?

    • Pig in a poke.

  • Hey there,

You need starting budget of $5k at least to test out the Ads. Make different Ad sets, try with different types like picture, video, search results, banners etc and then see which Ad set is performing. Choose your best and increase the budget of that set to increase your sales, while you keep trying on other Ad sets. Keep making changes to the Ad sets that are not performing, and something will eventually work.

There will come a point where you will start earning more than you spend.

    Cheers!

    • Thanks for the response. Noted.

Yes, I work with Ad Words. Waste of money imho. You are better off spending money on SEO, having an updated website with SEO built in and pouring money into social media advertising.

As an example, I took over my role recently where the click through spend was well over $1.20 per click conversion. That's extortionate.

I cut back Ad Words to stop trying to land ads on the front page and instead focussed on SEO (search functionality). By expanding the SEO to natural searching by clients, I've halved my spend to Google and yet increased my click through.

The money I saved, I put into Meta Business advertising where, in a combination of ads and organic post boosting, my click through costs are averaging $0.13 and my ads being clicked on in the 10s of thousands.

Meta rewards you with $5 credits for a) using their ads and b) being active. It doesn't mean posting everyday but you should aim for a mix of media 2-3 times a week to start.

Take whatever savings you make and invest in Canva Pro to make your posts and overall advertising look more professional.

You should note that over a 3rd of Aussies have adblockers and so Google Ads won't work for them. It's also a waste if people are searching for you directly but you haven't fixed the SEO.

Without knowing your business, you may also like to consider YouTube spend as it is the highest performing platform in the country (in terms of eyeballs and hang time)

    • I think the last point is key - search ads are decreasingly effective, particularly if you’re targeting younger demographics but without knowing your audience it’s difficult to determine the best strategy. Solid advice from Willowtea.

    • Perfect. Thank you for the response. Very helpful!

Agree with above. No longer use Ad Words, use social media. I don’t think many use browser search these days but depends on product naturally.
