  • Any one way options?

  • Is premium economy really worth it

    • +1

To Europe, I think this is pretty good. JAL's premium offering is also not bad at all. If longhaul premium is around or just under double the economy fare, it's pretty worthwhile (if you have the means).

About $129 per hour in the air, plus includes lounge access.

        What's the neg for again?

Because Triks got a cheaper price at a different airline for different dates at a lower travel class than this deal, obviously

          • @GoIdDigger: Yeah I think Triks was trying to do an apple and oranges comparison.

Yes, the Chinese deals were good to Europe, but they were for Economy, whereas this is a Premium Economy deal. Not everyone can easily handle the very long trip to Europe and might be time poor. In Flying in Premium Economy, passengers are more likely to get some sleep and thus arrive more fresh. People also don't like to be a zombie for a couple of days after arrival.

Now, others might prefer to save money and that is fine but some might prefer the nicer travel option, but both are good for what they are. Remember most other airlines are charging over to $4,000 for PE.

I flew JAL premium economy to Tokyo. The seats were incredible for PE. Definitely not "lay flat" but if you can sleep in a almost flat reclined position, the seats alone were worth it for me. They were also the type of seat in a frame that you slide forward in, so the person reclining in front of you has no impact on you. Not sure if any of this is specific to the plane I flew with however.

One thing to note is JALs premium economy is 42 inches of pitch, compared to only 38 for Qantas. Meals are similar to what you get in economy, although it has to be noted JALs economy catering is top notch.

Think the main thing why you'd do this is to get a more comfortable ride on such a long journey, the option to have a stopover (which I would very much take advantage of), more status and frequent flyer points and JAL lounge access included.

  • +2

Lounge access is a nice touch with JAL premium economy, its rare to get lounge access in premium economy (without status).

  • EDIT: The segments from Melbourne to Tokyo are only economy but PE onwards to Europe. JAL economy is still almost like premium economy anyway.

    Ex Melbourne price looks similar.

e.g. Direct from JAL website: $3,039
    MEL - NRT - FRA - NRT - MEL
    24 April - 13 May

    All legs on 787s.

Love having the overnight layover in Tokyo (but at your own expense), lounge access and a calm and comfortable JAL cabin.

Also to Helsinki: $1578 economy, $2878 premium economy.

    • Further to the above comment:
Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Hobart can get a free domestic Qantas economy flight to meet JAL premium economy flights from Sydney. Because it's on the one ticket, it is a protected connection.

If an option via Sydney is not shown there is a "More flights" button to 'search for other flights' at the bottom of the results page which gives you access to a 'Modify' button that brings up more creative routings.

A button to display available seat maps before having to fill out the booking form is also a great feature of the JAL site.

      • How do you get the free economy flight?

        • Multi city search on the JAL website is probably best

e.g. find a date for SYD - CDG from above and enter a search:
          MEL - SYD ECONOMY
          SYD - CDG PREMIUM
          CDG - SYD PREMIUM
          SYD - MEL ECONOMY
Make sure to choose domestic flights with 90-120 min transit time.

You can do it with 'roundtrip' search and the more flight options button but its fiddly.

  • Heads up the flights to Frankfurt come into Haneda and fly from Narita.
