VIOFO A229 Pro 2-Channel 4K Starvis2 Front & Rear Dash Cam US$237.21 (~A$385.27) Delivered @ VIOFO Official Store via AliExpress

1470
05CD30

The VIOFO A229 Pro is the best no-frills dashcam money can buy at the moment if all you wanted was great image quality, a good parking mode in the form of low-bitrate recording, 5GHz WiFi connectivity for viewing recordings/changing settings on the phone app and 18 months warranty (via registration with VIOFO).

Contrary to some people's opinions, its not brand name (like Garmin, Blackvue, etc) that determines the image quality of the dashcam, its primary what image sensor is used followed by the quality of post-processing and HDR. The Viofo A229 Pro stands out from the competition as it uses best in class Sony Starvis 2 image sensors on both the front (4K IMX678) and rear (1440p IMX675) channels of the dashcam, plus it has HDR that actually functions well & the A229 Pro is well suited for Australian conditions with circular polarising lenses available for both the front and rear camera (front included but rear CPL sold separately) to reduce sun glare and uses a supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery so it won't swell/explode in Aussie heat. Note: the supercapacitor acts like a UPS by saving the recording when dashcam power is lost (e.g. when you switch the car off or if power is lost during a crash), it does not function as a battery to power parking mode recording.

The VIOFO A229 Pro doesn't have cellular connectivity to receive notifications or view footage from anywhere like the $1,179 BlackVue DR970X Plus LTE or onboard radar to detect crashes and provide ADAS features (lane-keeping, forward collision warning, etc) like the $1,299 Thinkware U3000 but I doubt 99.9% of people in the market for a dashcam would pay an extra $800+ just for that, considering the VIOFO A229 Pro provides same if not better license plate readability in all lightning conditions when compared to those cameras. Comparison footage for example

The VIOFO A229 Pro is the top recommended dashcam by many independent reviewers like VortexRadar, Safe Driving Solutions and on the Dashcamtalk forums however keep in mind the camera was only released 7 months ago so you won't find it in comparisons done by many larger channels such as LTT for example whose last video on the topic is from August 2022. Compared to the popular A139 Pro in previous deals, for an extra $15 you get a 2.4" LCD which is handy for aiming the dashcam without relying on a phone and changing settings on the fly, and it also gets a rear camera with a 1440p Starvis 2 sensor on the A229 Pro rear (Starvis2 IMX675 5MP) while the A139 Pro rear camera is a previous generation 1080p sensor (Starvis1 IMX291 2MP) - well worth the price difference honestly.

If you are planning on hardwiring the dashcam, you will need the HK4 hardwiring kit which is available on the Aliexpress listing for an extra $15 or so. It can be hardwired to the vehicle starter battery or a separate dashcam battery like the Cellink Neo 8+ (sold separately). You can get the 3CH variant with a IR interior camera but I don't really see the point unless if you are a rideshare driver. You could get a VIOFO branded microSD card as an option on the listing which is far less likely to be a fake, but its cheaper to get the only other VIOFO recommended microSD card (SanDisk Max Endurance) from Amazon. The rear camera CPL filter (Part CPL-300) isn't available on the aliexpress store but can be bought for $20 on Viofo.com.

Pricing wise, $385 delivered (with coupon code 05CD30) is cheaper than the normal on sale price of $479 from Australian distributors and I would not expect it to be cheaper on eBay during plus week as eBay listings for this dashcam are $549+. The last VIOFO A229 Pro I bought on sale from Viofo.com was $420 delivered so this is $35 cheaper than before.

Thanks for the detailed write up 👍

    • +2

      Great write up indeed.

Paid $450 with the hardwire kit 2 months ago so this is a decent deal.

  • +1

    Code says expired for me.

Edit: tried a few more copy pastes and it worked. Weird.

  • +1

AAARGH…. Just paid ~$500 for this a couple weeks ago!!

  • +2

    I'm getting $400.5
    What am I doing wrong?

    Oops I added the hk4

    Purchased, thanks!

  • correct me if i'm wrong but you can also use hk3 to hardwire, but usbc connector won't be right angled

  • Is this an all time low? Shall I wait for further deals or worth pulling the trigger now? I'm thinking of the 2 channel including hard-wire kit. Advice anyone?

    • +1

I just bought the 2 channel kit with hardwire. Read enough reviews to consider it a cost effective purchase for the money. As long as it records decent pics, I'll tolerate a few rough edges.

Was considering waiting for the next BlackVue deal, but then realised I'd just be spending another $600-800 for not much more.

      • Thank you, can you please share what you meant by a few rough edges?

  • "This product can't be shipped to the selected country"…

EDIT: Aliexpress has issues on mobile, but got it to work by switching my browser to Desktop mode

  • Do I need the HK4 with this camera if I m buying the celllink neo 8 external battery?

    • +1

Yes, if you want parking mode to work correctly which draws about 1/3 less power than normal recording so it records for longer.

The risk of leaving it running in a normal, high bitrate mode for 24hrs by plugging it into the USB port on the Cellink Neo is that it can overheat and shut itself down especially on hot 45C days.

  • Also can anyone recommend a suitable microsd card apart from the viofo brand? I just want to see if I can get it for better price. Thank you

    • This one on sale and recommended one

Sandisk 128GB Max Endurance microSDHC Memory Card https://amzn.asia/d/1RDyd9r

      • Thank you, still can't decide if I should wait for a better price on the cam itself

    • I have been using the samsung pro endurance for 8 months and nothing wrong with it for my A139 pro. ( 4k duo cam highest bitrate). A229 pro will be the same.
I'll recommond any 256gb or 512gb endurance card on Amazon when on sale. Easy return during warrenty.

  • +1

    Nice!

Anyone seen a good deal on the Cellink Neo?

  • +2

I already have a hardwired kit installed in my car,
for the Viofo A129 but since this new model
uses USB-C, can I just stick a adapter to to the plugs
and just use this new A229 model ?

    • +2

Why not it’s just power connection

    • common sense tells me "yes".

    • +1

Came here to ask the same question lol.. if you end up doing it please let me know, also have the A129 installed :)

  • +1

I'm still using my a129! I like viofo! Thanks ozb!

  • DANG! just got the a129 last week so mad

  • When I follow the link it comes up as AU$248.77

    • +1

That is for the front camera only. You need to select 2ch kit for this deal.

  • +1

$400 inclduing tax, but what about the warranty?

    • i was thinking the same thing… does this make it harder to deal with issues with warranty if buy this item through aliexpress?

    • +1

      No warranty on AliExpress

  • +2

Thanks, I've been meaning to get a dashcam for ages, wasn't willing to pay what the stealership was charging.

  • Definitely recommend this dashcam. Clear resolution

  • +2

is 128gb microsd card enough for this cam? how long could that record for before it loops? and does it just record continuously if i have the 2chan camera connected to my battery? even when i park it and go to sleep at night?.. i never owned a dash cam before

    • +1

How long do you need the recording for ? I guess it’s fine for a week if you do drive daily . Depends on factors like camera recording res and quality etc . , yes it records continuously but I would get the hardwire kit so it stops recording after 12V is reached.

    • +2

      Don't have the Pro 4K but I have A229 Plus 2CH which is 2560 x 1440 @30fps.
At the highest quality a 3 min clip is 622MB for the front and 516MB for the rear. So over 1GB per 3 min.
      A 128GB card would therefore be less than 128 x 3 min = 384 min with the A229 Plus 2CH

The Pro 4K has 2.25x the pixel area of the Plus for the front camera. Not sure whether that directly translates to a 2.25x larger file size for the front or not, but if you go on that assumption, then the front + rear combined would be around 1.9GB per 3min

    • +4

The A229 Pro uses 604MB per minute to record in 2 channel at its native resolution. This is its high-bitrate recording size so with its low-bitrate parking mode you will get slightly more recording time.

With a 128GB microSD card that’s about 3hrs30min of recording before it starts looping.

      With a 256GB microSD card, that’s around 7hrs and with a 512GB microSD, that’s about 14hrs.

With a hardwire kit, it will record continuously after you switch your car off - until your battery reaches the low voltage cutoff that you set on the HK4 kit (anywhere from 11.8V to 12.4V).

How long it records in parking mode depends on factors like the capacity (Ah) of your battery and the low voltage cutoff set on HK4, but if you are going to use parking mode you should probably at least get a 256GB microSD card

      • Are these actual real world file sizes for the A229 pro as I cannot see how they can be any smaller than the plus for comparable quality unless these are the low quality settings?

        • +2

You’re likely getting mixed up between your stats that are for a 3minute clip vs the stats I provided (by Panzer Platform on dashcamtalk) that are per 1 minute. Some standardised file sizes per minute for the two dashcams below:

          A229 Plus 2CH - 380MB/minute comprising of Front 208 MB / Approximately 28 Mbps &
          Rear 172 MB / Approximately 23 Mbps

          A229 Pro 2CH - 604MB/minute comprising of
          Front 430 MB / Approximately 57 Mbps &
          Rear 174 MB / Approximately 23 Mbps

Both cameras were tested by him with bitrate set to maximum

  • +2

Fantastic, have been keeping an eye out for one of these! Thankyou!

  • I need help and this comes right when I was about to open a new thread on my problem. I’ve got Blackvue DR 750x and got hotspot to get alerts. However the biggest drawback is I cannot for the life of me see any of the number plates even 0.5m away from my rear bumper. A car almost hit me from rear and I got everything except the license plate to tell police. We almost had a huge accident and we were shaken.

    Questions:
    1) My Blackvue is hardwired and I’ve got battery pack can this Viofo model plug and play with the existing wiring and work with the blackvue battery pack?
    2) If not what are my most cost effective option to capture license plates?

    • Can you check your settings what your recording setting is ?

      • I downloaded the video it’s capturing front 1080p 1920x1080 60FPS..rear same but 30FPS.

        I think DR750x cannot record beyond 1080p.

        • Compression settings ?

          • @life is suffering: I don’t have compression as setting.
            My settings are:
            Resolution
            FHD@60 + FHD@30

            Image quality
            Highest (Extreme)

            Enhanced night vision
            On (Always)

            Brightness (Front) 3/5
            Brightness (Rear) 3/5

    • Are you viewing the footage via the app (preview footage) or have you downloaded it on your phone to view, or are viewing it directly via the SD card on your computer?

      • I have downloaded the original clip from the SD-card. I’m not sure with such a high price point this Blackview DR750x cannot capture license plates.

        • I used to have a DR750S (use a Thinkware U3000 now) so I'm not surprised, which is why I haven't recommend the 1080P Blackvues to any of my customers - but, 0.5m also seems a little too close to not capture the plates…

          • @rba: What are my options mate? Upgrade to Viofo? If yes can I use the same wiring and battery?

Or pay a lot for DR970x and I think I could still use the same wiring.

    • I had this experience yesterday with my DR750S 1920x1080p which is hardwired.

The car in front I could make out, but the one ahead of that, maybe 10m, was totally blurred. I'd guess the camera is 6-7 years old.

This was both on the app in original format and downloaded in full resolution.

Maybe age is getting to it.

One thing to note, a couple of years ago my rear DRS750S lens seemed to melt inside which was replaced out of warranty. Maybe our lenses are degrading in the heat?

      • Oh at least you got the number plate. I checked my lens it’s good so far. The rear camera is shit maybe you are right. My camera was purchased 3-4 years ago by Strathfield Radio. I’m not sure if it’s covered under warranty now.

I’m thinking to replace or upgrade but DR970x costs a lot.

  • dont forget to checkout the VIOFO BLUETOOTH REMOTE CONTROL if you buy one of these cameras… had a quick look and they go for around $30+.. cheapest place i found it, after a short search, with fast delivery was on Ebay from a1_electric_toys for $30.20 if you apply a voucher, normal price without voucher was $35.20, including free delivery to my address

you may find cheaper elsewhere.. i cannot vouch for a1_electric_toys so please do your own research and let me know if you find somewhere cheaper
it seems like a really handy accessory

    • The Bluetooth remote control, is simply an extra button to lock footage, which is available on the unit itself. It’s usually a waste of money unless you have some sort of restriction not allowing you to press the button on the unit.

      • On my wife's A129 plus, if you hit the lock button it beeps and stops recording. Never figured it out.

  • Good price I got 2k + HK4 for 347 back in Dec 2022

  • I currently have a Viofo A229 Duo hard-wired with the HK4 kit. If swapping, is it as simple as swapping the cameras out? Or would I need to run cables again?

    • +4

You need to run the rear camera cable again, it’s a USB-C cable now not a coaxial cable.

  • This vs 2x a119 mini v2?

    • Well this is 4k at the front for an extra ~$85?

  • Has anyone managed to get a 70mai A810 dashcam in Australia with proper warranty yet? It also has the same new sensor but seems to have better quality due to processing.

    • Seems neat but no capacitor with that one.

      • Hmmmm, true… I had a look on Amazon as they refund anything even a few years out of warranty but they only currently have the older model (no new stravis 2 sensor).

  • Did anyone buy their own dash viofo dash cam and got a third party to install? If so how muvh and where in sydney?

I got a reletively new car not fancing ruining my cabin trim with my newbie hands.

    • Just be careful whose hands you trust this job to. Your own may be the kindest. Google might help.

      • I get what you mean, had people work on my car before and i made the mistake of watching and thinking i would have taken more care the whole time…

    • For a sedan, should be really straight forward, 30 minutes to 1 hour max. So $75 to $100.

Hatch back, station wagon, SUV will be somewhat labour intensive for a clean install. It is because the rear door opens and you don't want a dangling wire, so a good installer with run the wire along with factory wire loom, depending on the car, can easily take double the time or longer.

By the way, for the most part, it is just tucking the wire behind trims and linings.

      • Unfortunately i have a SUV.. i could probably do it myself with youtube guide, just a matter ptobably having to take my time, i dont have the most delicate hands

    • I have a quote of $250 in Mazda CX-9, and with cellink neo 8+ battery $650. Its big car but thats expensive I think

      • +1

If you're in Sydney, feel free to pm me for a qoute. But, to be honest that qoute is reasonable - especially if the $650 includes supply of the battery, the battery itself sells for around $400, so they're not charging you extra.

        • Thank you, I was thinking $250 for installation is expensive, they said battery is $400

      • Might aswell save money for excess instead, incase need it

      • Do you mind me asking where you got your quote from? Looking for an installer also, with battery.

  • -8

very difficult to install you must drill holes and run wires everywhere on your car

    • Where are you having to drill holes? I've installed a few dash cams and pretty much always tuck the cables behind the door seals, pillars and roof lining.

    • Are you taking the piss? I also never heard of taking a drill to your car to install a dash cam

      • He's just being sarcastic.

        • I sure hope so

    • Haha, I think that's on a lot of people's mind. :D

Should be easier than changing oil.

    • Was the hardest part drilling into your windscreen?

  • Thanks OP. Finally took the leap to upgrade my 70mai.

  • Interested. What happens if I get one without hardwire kit? Do I need to re-update the date/time on it everytime I start the car or does it have battery to store those settings even without the hardwire kit?

    • +1

      It gets time from GPS

    • +1

It has a RTC battery which stores the time and date, onboard memory to store the settings. If there is no time/date saved it will acquire it from GPS as another commenter mentioned.

  • Please help me out, when I entry the code, it gives me error, "For security reasons your request can't currently processed"

For model with 2Ch plus HK4, without code the total is U$ 276.69 or A$ 445.

    • had the same issue. registering a new account worked for me.

  • If I already have the A129 Plus Duo, would it still be worth upgrading to this?

  • I'm getting $421.50 (including hard wire kit) even with the code? (Which only gives $5 discount)

    • Sounds like a typo happened somewhere - 05CD03 gives a $5 AUD discount while 05CD30 is a $45 AUD discount.

You can check the availability of coupons by clicking on the Choice day banner on aliexpress. For you to be able to use a coupon it has to display “Collected” on the top banner, if it says “Restocking” the code has been exhausted and may or may not be restocked later.

      • Thanks, it worked!

  • Is there no warranty on this product if you buy from Ali express ?

    • +1

You’re buying it directly from the manufacturer and their manufacturer warranty isn’t region locked.

What you do lose out is ACL, but considering none of their Australian distributors have physical stores it would be quite hard to fight for ACL coverage to begin with.

  • Do people find this bulky on the windshield?

    • +1

It’s kind of chunky but if you mount it left of the mirror you probably won’t see it anyways. On my car, like a lot of modern cars, there’s a bunch of sensors/cameras behind the rear view mirror that create a far bigger obstruction than this dashcam does

      • Thanks!

  • Thanks OP for posting. I bought the 2CH unit with the HK-4 hardwiring kit for $392.98 including tax & shipping. Cashrewards saved $14.71 and the cashback was tracked & confirmed soon after the purchase.

I have been quoted $250 for professional installation. Never used a dashcam before. Let's see how it goes.

  • "This coupon code is now unavailable. Try collecting another." - I must've been the last one to use the coupon as I checked the code as soon as I purchased and it was expired.

    • +1

Was still able to purchase last night using coupon for $378.01, and Shopback tracked at $14.39.

      Item shipped this morning.

The Aliexpress site was very clunky, especially at checkout.

      • +1

Yeah wowee, I tried in incog mode too, logging in and out and still got the same response. Glad it worked for you! I was super annoyed I didn't track the purchase with CashRewards though… massive fail. I pressed confirm purchase and then…. shouted very loud.

  • Anyone's shipped yet? Ordered May 1
