Just bought this (unopened) at $379 at Centrecom… should I return and buy this instead? How reputable are Aliexpress Ryzen CPU sellers?

    • +7

Depends on who you buy from. Look for people who have been in business for at least 4 years and prices aren't rock bottom.
SZCPU Store are one of the top rates AE stores, so they're safe to buy from.

    • AliExpress sellers are essentially a gamble, you pay a lower price now for essentially no buyer protection

      • +16

        Its Called paypal… protection..

      • +3

Why is this downvoted, it's true.

You have next to zero consumer protection, and would have to depend on paypal which only covers for "order not received" or "significantly not as described". In china you have 30 days from receipt to negotiate with seller if there is any defect. 30 days is not a long warranty and questionable at best to actually enforce.

        • you pay a lower price now for essentially no buyer protection

This part isn't true as there's PayPal buyer protection, as you've mentioned 😉 That's why there are negs.

      • +2

aliexpress have actually come a long way with their buyer protection and customer service. I'm not endorsing them, but from experience I've actually had better customer service from aliexpress than ebay as of late.

      • +1

        I think he's being ironic

        • +5

Yes he always comments about how AliExpress keeps sending him burritos.

          • +1

            @Clear: bruh where's mine - I've ordered like 10 times off ali

      • +3

I know this is a troll post but I have a fellow autist school mate of mine that studied comp eng and ended up working for ASIO. He couldn't/wouldn't tell us shit about his job but he did tell me that the type of breaches or "spyware" he was looking for was embedded in ram and cache etc

This was in like 2008 and it blew my mind.

        • Woah

    • Depends how much you care about warranty too

  • Bugger, just bought this from the last deal for $320. Great deal at this price.

    • +1

      At least you got warranty.

      • +8

It was also from Ali Express, so maybe not :-D

  • Will this run fine on b450 mortar max motherboard?

    • +2

I have just dropped it into an MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX, replacing a 3600, without any issues (although it has only been 2 days). Just make sure your BIOS is up to date and it should be fine.

      • I just bought one for the same mobo, also replacing same. I don't expect any issues. The B450 is still a great motherboard.

        • Only issue I've noticed (which might've been happening with the old CPU) is that my RAM timings are down to 2133MHz, even though they are meant to support 3200. Setting those timings causes a failed boot. Might've been happening before, I only noticed now because with the new CPU it completely reset all the BIOS settings.

          • +8

@EspadaV8: You need to turn on XMP profile 1 in the BIOS settings, otherwise the memory will cap at 2133.

            this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjbnY10MmDg

            • @AngoraFish: Yeah, I've tried setting XMP both profiles 1 and 2 (they are both the same configuration), however, it doesn't actually change any setting and continues to boot with 2133.

I have just tried manually setting the XMP settings though and managed to get it to 3000. Not quiet the 3200 it's meant to support, but close enough for me.

      • I don't think this will make much difference for games running at 5120 x 1440 coming from a 3700x/3080Ti, current CPU shouldn't be much of a bottleneck now?

  • +3

Insane, got it for $263, just about half of the 5800x3d retail here.

  • Upgrading from a R5 2600 on b450. Man needed this for VM's.

  • +1

    $275 inclusive gst?

    • +3

After the $30 discount code, yes.

      • I think you mean the US$20 discount code.

        • +2

          which is approx. AU$30

  • +5

Thoughts about going from a 5600X? Is it worthwhile?

    • Some benchmarks show negligible difference, some show 20%… I am so confused!

    • +6

I've asked this too. Generally speaking, eh. If you're at 1080p maybe. At 1440p and above less so.

I'd personally just save for a new platform. The 5600x does the job! (I went from a 2600 to a 5600x and was a huge difference. I don't expect the same jump to an x3d model)

    • +2

      I've considered this as well.
I game at 1440p with 3090 and the uplift would only 1-5% in most games but some games that are CPU bound like CSGO, Starfield up to 15%. Very title-dependent and I gathered it's not worth it.

      • "1440p with 3090 and the uplift would only 1-5% in most games but some games that are CPU bound like CSGO, Starfield up to 15%."
Agree, i checked some reviews and benchmarks. If the games isn't CPU bound, just few % fps increased.

        • Thanks guys, have decided not to pursue upgrade (afterall it is a want not a need!)

    • +1

I've gone for it, but primarily because going any further will require a completely new computer anyway… any higher spec and i'll be thermal throttled in my sffpc setup. I am pretty confident that even if it doesn't provide a lot of top end increase it will reduce the dips some games see.

Oh, I should also say that i have kids/nephews that are at the age where they're keen for a gaming pc, so the 5600x will definitely find a good home.

  • +2

Crud that's so tempting lol … I have a 5600X as well 😐.. must resist!!!

  • +1

Just remember, there is no consumer guarantee with goods purchased directly from china, outside of a strict 30 day window to inspect the goods and make a claim. Certainly no 1 year warranty against defect and functional issues that we have under Australian consumer law. Buyer beware.

    • I always thought ACL automatically applied to any business that agrees to sell to Australian residents? As in, if their website is accessible from Australia, they should hold GST and are liable under our laws?

      • +1

Nope, only Australian companies selling to consumers for goods <$40K are subject to ACL - practically speaking anyways.

      • +2

Have you ever seen china submit to Australian law? It's not a thing, and even if the Australian law did try and apply to other jurisdictions, good luck enforcing it.

    • +3

While you are completely correct, compared to components like GPUs and motherboards, with lots of cheap, individual chips stuck into a PCB, CPUs tend to work out of the box and be reliable, or not work at all. The failure rate after 30 days would be quite low compared to a lot of other PC bits

  • +3

Bought mine last week for $364.37 from Computer Alliance, feels bad man…

  • +1

Rolled the dice, let's see what happens.

    • +1

please post an update when you get it, keen to get one soon

      • delivery eta 24th may

  • Got 5600 for 18 months only, pairing with 6800. Resist….

  • +3

    Time to upgrade the 3600.

  • Quite a bit of feedback from buyers about receiving 2nd hand CPUs. Don't think Id risk it personally.

    • +1

The CPU is so new I'd be surprised if that was possible.

      • I don't think you can actually tell where these chips are coming from, since it's not coming from an official retail channel.

        • +3

Of course, but his point is that the 5700X3D has only been available since 31 Jan 2024. The absolute worst-case outcome here is a chip that was used for three months and then flipped, which seems unlikely.

          • +1

@AngoraFish: yeah I agree it is very unlikely, maybe just a gentle reminder to have an open mind when buying from Aliexpress

    • +4

There's a lot of feedback there that looks 100% like user error.

Bent pins, for example, only discovered after having to "force CPU into motherboard", scratches only discovered a month after install (I mean, wait, what?), tech problems that wouldn't normally be CPU related, and quite a few people who likely haven't updated the BIOS of their old mobos.

Then there's the usual items lost in transit, or wrong items shipped.

Regardless, CPUs almost never fail unless subject to extreme overclocking, in which case you would normally know about that out of the box.

  • +1

damn I already ordered just a week back … like 399 .. waiting in auspost to be collected :|.. but I decided not to go aliexpress .. for warranty which takes some effort to ship back stuff to china.. I had to return a phone once .. the return postage is under buyers cost and had to chat with aliexpress reps for rma address..

    • I feel ya man, paid ~$365 last week. At least we get aus warranty and a (mostly) empty box!
Upgraded from a 3600 and it is absolutely awesome, just get it installed and get gaming, you'll forget about the price difference soon enough ^_^

  • For a 'new' build (upgrading from 10th gen Intel), what would you guys rather choose? The Ryzen 7 7700, or the Ryzen 7 5700X3D? CPU cost is similar, but overall hardware cost would be higher for AM5.

    • +1

Unless you're on a strict budget, go with the AM5 7700. Similar/better gaming performance, much better productivity performance.

AM4 might be worth it if you can re-use your DDR4 (assuming it's 3200C16 or better), and get a cheap B550M motherboard (approx $110 during ebay sales) - would be about $400 all up including cpu from this deal.

      • Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I've got 32GB of 3600 CL16 already, so it might be worth just sticking with AM4.

        • In that case, go AM4 with a cheap motherboard, and put the savingts towards a next-gen build next year or later.

    • +2

My thoughts are that end of life AM4 is a mature and stable platform that is extremely cost effective at the moment relative to performance. You'll be hard pressed to find a driver or hardware that doesn't work flawlessly with it.

Anything you buy now will be cracking good for at least 4 years, and potentially a few more years on top of that depending on how close to the cutting edge you sail your tech.

AM5 is still early in its lifecycle, so when you hit the point that your AM4 build is starting to feel creaky you're likely looking at a new motherboard and memory either way.

"Future proofing" by buying tech right at the start of its lifespan is a fool's errand, in my view. If you're the kind of person who genuinely wants the best of everything you're hardly going to be buying a second gen AM5 chip and dropping it into a first gen AM5 mobo in four or five years.

GPUs won't care if you're on AM4 or AM5 for many years. Nor will games, since they're nearly always tuned a generation behind anyhow so they can actually sell to normal people, not just tech geeks.

The internet is full of great AM4 deals right now. Dollar for dollar of investment, as of right now, it's really hard to pass up an AM4 build in my view.

    • Except you are in a hurry, i will wait for new AMD processors coming in few months. I expect better performances new CPU or cheaper 7000 series CPU by the time. Just Upgrading the CPU (eg 3600 or below) make sense, CPU + m/b for last gen? soso, especially Intel 10th gen isn't that old.
5700x3d slighly slower than 5800x3d, 1440p performance chart here

  • Got mine from another store on the last Ali discount for $290 arrived few days ago and working quite well.

Did record the opening and did full inspection. Decent cpu for sure

  • "5 Reviews ౹ 450 sold" …. are we sure this is a good idea?!

    • +2

445 of those sales are from OzBargain, and most are still fighting their way through Customs. :-)

  • I guess it's finally time for my 1700x to get the old Spanish archer. I've been having decent luck with AliExpress recently so I hope it holds.
And a 5700x3d should hold me out through the AM5 generation.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger, purchased with PayPal came out to $275.63 delivered.

Had been waiting out for a 5800x3d but figured at nearly half the price it was hard to pass up a nearly as good chip. Upgrading from a 3600 and will be paired with a 4080, should push me through another 4 or 5 years hopefully.

  • Any recommendations on a cooler for this CPU?
Currently have a Deepcool AG400 LED CPU Cooler which im going to assume aint enough for this so fire away.

  • +1

Got this from this store during the last sale, was closer to $300 for me (bad CC conversion :/ ).

Took about 2 weeks to arrive. Runs great though on an Aorus B550M Elite. So cool and efficient, I actually forgot to plug the CPU fan in again for a few hours and it didn't even flinch haha

    • +1

      look into undervolting it.
it is amazing and runs even cooler and achieve same speeds

      • Thanks for the reminder. Not sure if I got the settings right, but -8W, -10°C and +100MHz all core clocks when running Cinebench R23, so that's cool.

  • God damn it wish I didn't order that 5950x3d from the german amazon deal

    • beast of a cpu anyways mate :P. end of the line upgrade til you decide to get a new pc

  • -1

    Page no longer available.

  • Considering whether to upgrade to this from an i5-7600k, or go am5 instead

    • Am5, this is on par or just below a 7700. Not recommended to go with an AM4 build at this point. Zen5 is out this year so there may be a price adjustment for zen4 stuff

    • I don't think it makes sense to buy AM4 when it's already end of line.

      • It depends if you want to still keep for another 3-4 years though. I have 0 issues with my 3800x but can see if I bought this could extend it X more years. Am rocking a 3080 so not much bottle neck for gpu for me. Plus I only take at 2k.

        • I mean, personally I would be willing to pay the $100-200 extra to have an additional upgrade cycle. Especially now that AM5 is no longer that new/expensive and any obvious bugs should have been ironed out for the mobos.

I have an AM4 board (just got this deal to refresh my 3600) which I setup during COVID before AM5, but buying a new mobo now I would definitely get AM5 personally.

  • Can anyone recommend good budget GPU on sale for this processor as I have no idea about gpu and will upgrade my current pc next year to amd5 ?

    • Can you give us an idea what you want to spend? Because honestly, despite working in IT and being a PC gamer, I couldn't tell you what "Budget GPU" even means these days. What I would have used to called budget level cards are now ~$700.

      • $500 also I am not hardcore gamer I play valorant & counter strike mainly

        • +1

In an ideal world you'd want to find a Radeon 6700XT, but they seem to be pretty much gone in Australia. Probably the 7600XT is the best bang for buck at that budget new now.

If you aren't in a rush though, it would be worth waiting a few months to see how Intel Battlemage and RDNA4 play out.

          • @Arsenal: Thanks for your suggestion I just now purchased Radeon 6700XT for 400 from Marketplace.

          • @Arsenal: Lastly, I want to confirm will this GPU work with MSI 450m mortar max mobo? if not which AM4 motherboard should I go for. I have purchased 2x16gb ram 3600mhz CL18 too. Thanks a lot for your help

            • @Andy3012: Nice work! The 6700XT should work perfectly with that motherboard.

            • @Andy3012: You will need bios update 2K to make it run. Not a problem if you are running a CPU already you can update it.

edit: referring to 5700x3d not gpu.

        • Those games are easy to run, even a $300 6600 should do well unless you play at 4K.

  • Anyone bought it from JS-Computer Store? A bit cheaper.

    • Debating risking it

  • +8

Arrived and installed today. Looks legit, and is coming up correctly in CPU-Z.

I'll do a proper burn in this evening, but so far so good.

    • +5

I've run several 3D Mark stress tests and benchmarks now with no issues at all, great chip.

Runs surprisingly cool as well at stock, which is a nice bonus.

Overall I'm very happy. In fact, it's much better than I was expecting.

      • +2

Thanks heaps for the report back.

      • Sounds good… what was your previous cpu?

        • mobo: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
          CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: MSI Geforce GTX 1660 Gaming X 6G

I have only swapped over the CPU and memory at this point.

I'm now getting over 60 frames at 1440p in quite a few benchmarks on high settings, with nothing under 30. It runs a dream at 1080p.
