Altitude Qantas Platinum Credit Card: 60,000 Points ($4,000 Spend in 90 Days), $124 1st Year Fee (Existing Customer) @ Westpac

Thanks for picking up a few errors, have been fixed: CaptainHoltisDad & Tandus

60,000 Qantas Points in year 1 if you spend $4k+ on eligible purchases† within 90 days of new card approval and an extra 20,000 points after your first eligible purchase in year 2.

Plus, a reduced first year card fee of $99 or $49 card fee for the first year if you are a Westpac customer (reverts to $175 thereafter).
$75 Annual Qantas Rewards Program fee applies.
Offer not available if you’ve held an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card with Altitude Rewards, Qantas or Velocity in the last 12 months. T&Cs apply.

Therefore, if you are a Westpac Customer your annual fee will be reduced to $49, and the Qantas Rewards component will cost you $75 = $124 annual fee
I feel as if this Westpac card is the best value out there for earning Qantas Points at (60,000/$124=) 483 Qantas points per dollar paid in fees

I've done a quick lap around the banks websites and crunched some numbers.
Disclaimer, everything applies below if you haven't held any of these banks specific cards in the last 12 or 18 months (depending on the bank).
Some of these cards have bonus offers if you keep them open for 12 or 18 months, but who'd do that, we just keep churnin'
Any better value out there, please let me know. I know you lot are pretty quick to annihilate every deal and pick it to pieces the second it's posted.
I've smacked this comparison together in 20 minutes, I dare say there might be one or two errors, but it'll point you in the right direction:

Credit Card Annual Fee Sign-Up Bonus Bonus Criteria Qantas Points per Dollar
Westpac Altitude Platinum $124 (reduced) 60,000 points $4k spend in 90 days 483
St George Amplify Platinum $124 (reduced) 60,000 points $3k spend in 90 days 483
St George Amplify Signature $214 (reduced) 90,000 points $6k spend in 90 days 420
Westpac Altitude Black $225 (reduced) 90,000 points $6k spend in 120 days 400
CommBank Smart Awards $60 (+$19 per month under $2k spend) 10,000 points per month for 3 months $1.5k spend each month 500
ANZ Frequent Flyer Black $425-$200 cashback = $225 90,000 points & $200 cashback $5k spend in 90 days 400 (after cashback)
NAB Rewards Premium $150 (reduced) 60,000 points $2k spend in 60 days 400
ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum $295-$100 cashback = $195 75,000 points & $100 cashback $2.5k spend in 90 days 384 (after cashback)
NAB Rewards Signature $295 (reduced) 90,000 points $3k spend in 60 days 305
Qantas Premier Platinum $349 70,000 points $3k spend in 90 days 200
AMEX Ultimate $450 60,000 points $3k spend in 90 days 133
Qantas Premier Titanium $1200 150,000 points $5k spend in 90 days 125

And if you have a business with eligible ABN:

Credit Card Annual Fee Sign-Up Bonus Bonus Criteria Qantas Points per Dollar
NAB Business Signature $295 150,000 points $4k spend in 60 days 508 (after cashback)
AMEX Business Rewards $450 170,000 points $6k spend in 90 days 378 (after cashback)

If you are not turning Qantas Points credit cards you need to start now.
I just booked business return to America for 300K points and $200 in taxes (used additional points to pay less in taxes)

Personally I think 4 really good options with a good mix of number of points vs points per dollar paid in fees would be the below (and I've done all of these in the last 12 months) which would set you back $700 but you'd earn 300K points and get that business class return flight to America for under $1k.

  • Westpac Altitude Platinum $124 Fee, 80,000 points
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Black: $225 Fee, 90,000 points
  • St George Amplify Platinum: $199 Fee, 70,000 points
  • NAB Rewards Premium: $150 Fee, 60,000 points

  • How long do I need to be a westpac customer to get the reduced fee? I can't see details on the website.

Just sign up for an everyday transaction card then apply for a credit card logged in. Job done.

      • Awesome. thanks

  • does westpac give pro rata refunds?

    • This thread may be useful. Westpac and ANZ have mixed results now in getting the annual fee or a portion of it refunded.

  • Do you have to pay the - $75 Annual Qantas Rewards Program fee. What if you already have Qantas rewards?

    • Yes. They will automatic charge you together with annual fee in 1st statement.

Don't confuse this with the Qantas joining fee - which nobody needed to pay anyway.

NAB used to have 120k Qantas points for $3k spend for existing customers, however looks like they changed it a couple of months ago.

Quite possibly you can still get this but after 13 months. When cancelling my last NAB credit via chat it was stated "Please be advised that we do not refund annual fees for cards that have not elapsed a year of being opened". I interpret that on the 13th month (or just after 12 months) you could get a pro-rata refund of your second year's annual fee"

Effectively you should be able to get 120k points for ~$320 but you would have to keep the card open for the year.

Personally I calculate points value by including the min spend. With the above table you would say that Westpac and St George Platinum cards are the same value but you have a lower min spend with St George. Why spend another $1k on the Westpac card when it could be $1k spent towards another card to meet its min spend? Anyway adding a different perspective and each to their own.

I think points per annual fee dollar is a more important metric than points per dollar (min spend)

  • Hey Guys,

I'd like to get started with the CC/FF points system (Virgin), but I have no idea where to start.
Are there any good tutorial articles / videos explaining the best way / card to start with?

  • Anyone else who got the westpac card unable to add to google pay? I get error the card isn't support

  • do these spend include gift card purchases ? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/846343 ?

    • Yep.

  • Thanks for the summary of all current Qantas Credit cards. At the moment I can't apply for Amex, NAB and Commbank since I've got them within the last 18 months. Wanted to go for ANZ, however, sometimes ANZ bump their offer and I think I'll wait for that. In the meantime, I'll be getting St. George.

Thanks again OP for gathering all these info.
