How Do NSW Safety Cameras Work in a 4 Way Intersection When There's Only 1 Camera?

Hey guys,

I was driving on this road, 50 zone and around 6pm tonight and the lights turned yellow, I stopped but there was this guy behind me in a rush, they 100% ran through the red light and their whole car was definitely behind the unbroken line when they ran through the red light.

I was confused cause there was no flash or anything, then I scouted the area and only saw 1 side where there are cameras on the left side next to the church. No other camera in the intersection. Not even a camera opposite on the McDonalds side.

Just wondering, how does 1 camera facing the intersection catch people out on all 4 sides of an intersection, when this particular car the rego plate may be hard to catch by the camera if the car side on? I assume the camera has a very large area of sight and needs to take multiple photos, more than 2?

    It doesn't. It only captures the one direction away from the camera. If you look closely, you can see there are no induction loops on 3 sides of the intersection.

    As far as i know, the cameras are only set to take images of the rear number plate. They put signs up for the dumb drivers.

    Yeah I know that intersection well and that camera on it only catches out northbound traffic.

      It's weird to see all 4 sides of the intersection has these incoming red light street camera signs but only the northbound one has the camera. The same with one in for westbound in Seven Hills rd/Prospect/Johnson/Station intersection.

      ChatGPT and Gemini states that In intersections like the one you mentioned at Vaughan St and Olympic Drive, where there's only one visible camera but signs indicating red light cameras on all four sides, the camera is typically positioned strategically to capture violations from multiple directions.

      Not sure if this is true or not.

        This what got me, if the camera only detects one way but all 4 roads has the sign, is it even legal? Isn't it illegal to say something that is not true? Let's say if it true that the 1 camera only captures one way. I understand putting 'fake' signs but what other fake signs are there on the road…. just cause they can

          I see what you're saying, it's slightly misleading. But it's not fake. The sign is technically correct. The existence of a safety camera is true.

          If it makes most people slow down to ultimately reduce accidents, then it's the correct end result anyway. 🤷🏻‍♂️

            @John Kimble: Mobile speed cameras are not bi-directional, there's only warning signs on the same side of the mobile camera, but if they put signs on the other side, even though they will never capture the other side (unless they make the capture bi-directional), this is misleading AF just to force people going way below the speed limit. Most people go up to 10km/h below the speed limit when there's a camera or suddenly slow down and for those extra careful will go up to 15km/h. IMO this ironically may cause a crash in-which the signs were to prevent it in the first place.

                Warning signs passively make people slow down and you know it.

                You can't argue that people don't slow down when they see a camera or a warning sign even if they are going the speed limit, I'm sure you slow down too.

                Even at red light/speed cameras, you see people suddenly stop at the yellow light (even though they will make it) because the risk isn't worth it.

                  This is not a bad thing. Yes, some people take it to the extreme and go through at half the speed limit, but they are the exception not the norm. Most people take it as a good reminder to check their speed and ensure they're at/under the limit.

                  I use it as an opportunity to ensure I am at/under the limit. This is the entire point of the signs.

                  Red light cameras are a tricky one as it's a split second decision whether to go through or stop. It's 3 points and $500 fine in NSW which isn't worth the risk so that is one I don't blame people for taking more caution around them.

          The sign is true though, there is a speed/red light camera ahead at the intersection.

          You would have a point if the sign said there is not a camera ahead when there actually was.
