    For Qantas Frequent Flyers: Cathay is a oneworld member, however these fares book into Q class which isn't eligible to earn any QFF points or status credits. You should only add your QFF number to the booking if you have status with Qantas, and are looking to utilise status benefits like free seat selection, extra luggage, and lounge access.

    Cathay Asia Miles, British Airways Avios, and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan are a few other oneworld programs that will give you something for these flights.

    It's also worth mentioning that the fares quoted here fly into Narita. For about $10-20 extra you can fly into Haneda, which is the better deal as you will save more than $10-20 travelling into Tokyo (by train) as well as at least an hour of your time.

      Very unlikely to happen. Japan is seeing record tourism levels this year, and late December/early January is one of the busiest travel periods for both inbound foreigners and outbound Japanese travellers.

      If you are looking to go to the snow you're better off planning for late January or early February when you're guaranteed all runs will be open and lifts will be operating. There's a far higher chance of a sale fare popping up which covers those dates. Also, if you're looking to ski in Hokkaido, you can line up your trip with the Sapporo Snow Festival.

    It's crazy how an airline can offer a non-direct flight cheaper, or even at a similar price, than a direct flight.
    Yes, Hong Kong is on the way to Japan anyway, but in theory, shouldn't it be more expensive given you are taking two flights.

    In this case, the first leg will be to Hong Kong, and then another flight to Japan.
    While there are many sales on full-service carriers that fly direct to Japan at the moment (ANA, JAL, sometimes Qantas), this does seem to be one of the lowest prices.

      Actually, they do this to offer the remaining seats of the plane. Majority of the passengers on these kind of flights are just going to the first destination.

      Business travellers are inclined to book direct to save time. Hence the expensive fares.

      My employer for the longest of time has always prioritised time savings over cost to an extent.

      If a flight with stopovers ends up costing more than a direct flight, hardly anyone would opt for the one with stopovers unless they specifically want to visit those spots.
      To attract travellers to choose their own routes and share the market (Australia and Japan routes in this case), airlines gotta throw in some sweet deals and make up for the extra time with attractive pricing

      Non-direct flights take more time, some people just don't have that time since their vacation is so short and precious.

      In this case, they lose some markets. But airlines need to fill these gaps, so they are forced to reduce prices.
