    Something, something, good deal.

I own a Samsung TV which has all the streaming apps I want, and a Hinsense TV that I use with Chromecast. Would this Apple TV inprove either of these two devices, or provide me with options or functionality you think Im missing out on?

    • +1

I got the 64GB variant for my Kogan TV and it's made the overall experience a lot nicer. My partner and I have iPhones so the seemless integration there (AirPlay, use phone as remote) made it worth it for us.

    • +2

If all your apps are current and work well, it'd only benefit you for Airplay use from iPhones/iPads, or any service that Chromecast/Miracast doesn't support.

I'd normally recommend these, or a newer Chromecast or Fire TV if you've got an older panel where the inbuilt apps or Chromecast can't update to support whatever upgrades the streaming services have made.

    • +1

I'm in the same position and my Samsung TV also has Airplay built in so i'd say no theres no use for an Apple TV.

    • +1

If you have an iPhone or Mac there are other features aside from from constant app and OS updates. We have a Chromecast but have apple devices so we're looking to change over to an Apple TV. The mains reasons are:

      • Airplay phone/mac to the TV. To screen cast my devices with minimal lag.
      • Facetime integration (uses an iPhone as camera and displays the caller on the TV)
      • More responsive OS/UI. I'm finding the Chromecast laggy at times
      • Ethernet port!
      • +1

Facetime integration (uses an iPhone as camera and displays the caller on the TV)

If you already got a iphone, why would want to display the caller on the TV
and interrupt whatever you were watching?

        • Because people like to overcomplicate their lives.

        • +1

Bigger screen to see all the grandparents and for them to see all the kids maybe?

I have a Samsung QN90B and I have an Apple TV. Here are some of the benefits I enjoy:

      1. Really fast. I just don’t like Tizen, it’s temperamental at best and unusable at worse. If there’s one thing I can trust Apple with, it’s with the UI.

      2. I don’t have to worry about my TV manufacturer not supporting the software after a year or two. tvOS gets a lot more frequent updates compared to my TV. I’ve owned the TV for two years and it’s received one update. When you buy an AppleTV you not only get the physical box but also consistent software support.

      3. Apple integration. If you have any Apple devices, an Apple TV is a no brainer.

      • All brilliant answers. Thank you, everyone.

  • This or homepod for homekit hub? I don't have use of either but only need it for a homekit hub..

    • +2

Well one is a speaker and the other is a media device. If you need a speaker then get a HomePod, if you need a media device then get this. If you need neither then get a secondhand HomePod from Marketplace.

      • +1

Still can get a secondhand one and it's going to be great, no matter the needs. Unless the needs is to get a brand new item specifically.

    • +2

Do not get a HomePod for a hub, I disabled mine because the tv is superior. Sometimes devices don’t turn on when my homepod is the main hub.

      • You can't disable HomePods as a HomeKit hub, so I'd love to know how you did that (genuinely, they cause me so much grief).

        • Disable automatic updates on HomePod, ethernet on the apple tv, and when I lose my cool I just completely unplug the homepod.

          • +2

@blacksnow: They'll just enable themselves back as standby devices. I have ethernet Apple TVs and I'll power cycle the HomePods to have the Apple TVs take priority, but after time the HomePods will just take over again. I wish you could set the priority (or disable altogether).

But yes, buy an Ethernet Apple TV if you want a Home Hub!

            • @thrillhouse: thanks mate, that's exactly what I was after. I was pretty pissed off when Apple decided to turn off iPad as homekit hub!

              • +1

@IMadeYouReadThis: In my experience you really want something hard wired (i.e. Ethernet) to act as your Home Hub, which right now is only the Apple TV. The new Apple TVs have the bonus of being Thread compatible as well (same as the AirPod Minis, but they're only WiFi). Get one, and you'll be set!

  • this v Google Chromecast?

    • +4

      This any day

    • +4

I've had both and prefer the ATV as it's smoother and works better for HDR/DV content, but it's also about double the price. If you're using it in a home cinema or are heavily in the Apple ecosystem then go this, otherwise the Google probably works fine.

    • +1

I find the Chromecast to be very sluggish and can sometimes be a little choppy playback wise. But you're comparing something which is essentially 3/4 times the price

      • The problem with the Chromecast TV is that it's Wi-Fi only. Solved our problems with the Ethernet -> USB-C adapter.

        • +1

I'm not entirely sure it's related to being WIFI only. I think the overall device is far too under-speced. It can even be fairly choppy going between menus.

    • Apple TV every day of the week.

  • +2

For those that are invested in the HomeKit ecosystem, the 128GB model (this one) supports Thread and allows ethernet connection (the 64GB is WiFi only).

  • Thanks OP, nabbed one! I've been contemplating upgrading for a while now, this sealed the deal.

  • +1

    Good price on this.
The basic advice of IOS v Android also applies to these.
If you just want a streamer thats nicely presented and fast, get this , especially if you already have other apple products as they synch well and add a few extra features.

If youre looking for more specialised/modifiable setup , side loading etc , then nvidia shield might be more suitable.

  • I have sony a80J with denon AVR for speakers, do I still need this? I also need a home hub so currently considering between this or HomePod

  • Thanks, got one. The tcl’s tv interface is starting to give troubles, plus was looking for one for home hub.

    • Upgrade a new firmware for tcl. It may help

  • OOS now :(

  • +1

Back in stock, just scored one

  • Seems to be back in stock now?

  • +1

Just tried and seemingly got one…….YAY!

  • Marked as OOS on here but managed to get one still, shame I missed the airpod pros though

  • I am very happy with my Apple TV 2022.The best device that I have tried yet. I have had the XBMC on original XBOX, WDTV Live, Boxee Box, Nexus Player, Fire Sticks from US and AU, and the Chromecast with Google TV.

  • -2

You know what really grinds my gears… People who think they don’t need and Apple TV and use their smart tv instead. 😵‍💫

    • I used TV os all the time even though I have this apple tv device. Dont even think it is worth thr money if you are not into smart home.
It is definitely okay with this price.

  • +1

Thanks, grabbed one, great deal I was previously looking at refurb for $209

    • +1

You will be happy. Much faster than any TV.

  • +1

Thanks grabbed one. Massive upgrade from Apple TV 3rd gen.

  • Good deal, thanks HamBoi

  • -1

Any way for non plus members to get it cheaper?

  • Is there any way to get Stremio working with Apple TV's? I'm finding that some HDR/4K content stutters with my Chromecast 4k.

  • Thanks @HamBoi69, just bought, now waiting for the Apology email

    • They keep adding quantity so you'd hope not.

  • Isn’t there an upcoming Apple keynote event on 7th May? New Apple TV maybe?

    • Possible, all rumours until it happens. iPad heavily expected.

    • I was going to wait but I don't think it will be announced just yet

  • Sold out, just missed out

    • Try again. It's back in stock.

      • Yep checked this morning and picked one up. Thanks!

    • In stock now

  • +1

Restocked, just bought one, still show More than 10 available

  • This is a cracker deal! Back in stock now
