I am helping a friend who having a tough time at the moment.

I am thinking to get a him a basic laptop under $300, so it can help him applying jobs, building a resume etc. Would this be sufficient for basic jobs like applying jobs, Microsoft word etc?

Preferably is laptop, due to space (he is sharing a room atm)

Is there any decent refurb laptop on Ebay?

  • For applying job, doing work processing, etc — linked Lenovo ThinkCentre is more than enough. However with desktops you do need to also source a monitor + other peripherals.

Or is there any decent refurb laptop on Ebay?

Search for refurbished laptop under $300 on eBay? Anything with at least 8th gen Intel Core are decent.

    • Thanks Scotty, I just editing my post. I think laptop would be good, because he is sharing a room atm.
Thanks, I saw quite a few on Ebay, but not sure which. I will check on processor 8th Gen

  • I think this is will be my pick
    HP EliteBook 830 G5 Intel i5 8350U 1.70GHz 8GB RAM 256GB SSD 13.3" Win 11 $299 on ebay

Remember to use the coupon code TECHMAY to take $20 off.

    • browse a bit more for 16GB RAM.. hmm probably will go over $300

  • Pray for some Surface Pros. I've gotten my dad and partner these and they're great.

  • A grade. Dell Latitude 7390 or 7300. You could get 5300 for the same price. Intel 8th Gen with win 11 installed.

    Lenovo Carbon X1

Hands down the most reliable and user friendly laptop i've owned.
Love mine - have owned it for 5 years and still gets 6+ hours battery life.

    • Lower processor than the Elitebook and smaller RAM too. but much significantly cheaper as well. Do you think it can handle basic tasks well?

      • It's also cheaper.

If you want like for like

Although 16gb of ram is a bit of overkill for basic tasks. Anything from the last 5 years will handle what they'll want to do with ease.

      • That model was the govt supplied notebooks we had in my old job, enough grunt for the basic tasks your friend needs.

Sometimes I wonder how laptop users back in the Sandy/Ivy Bridge (or heavens forbid, in the Core 2 Duo days) get enough computing power to perform basic tasks like writing resumes and watching videos… /s

  • If he has the space.. desktop is a much better and flexible option…..
Laptops have a much much higher failure rate and aren't likely to last as long.

Ex-office desktops are often very very cheap..

Last time , i went through around 4 refurb laptops, before I got, one, that didn't have any faults.. and the battery wasn't too shot..

    total waste of time..
