Do Number of Upvotes Impact Your OzBargain Purchase?

Hi Everyone,

When I find any good deal on OzBargain, I check the upvote count and sometimes skip the deals with lower upvotes assuming no one is buying it so even I should not. So, wondering how many of us are actually influenced by number of votes and comments.

Thanks

Do Number of Upvotes Impact Your OzBargain Purchase?

    No, only Downvotes.

    • Thanks @jv added another option in votes.

    • I use a different system.

      If jv is for'em, I'm agin'em.

      If jv is agin'em, I'm for'em.

Why would what someone else needs/wants influence my purchase?

It only affects sheep and non-independant thinkers.

depends on the product, if it's something I need but I never had any experience with, I'll go through the entire comment section (upvote and downvote)

if it's something I am some what familiar with, I'll buy/not buy based on the amount of discount vs how urgently I need it.

There is no consistency in the voting behaviour of most people anyway. People oftentimes vote on the deal because they think the product is cool or interesting or desirable (e.g Tesla deals), or they like the store or deal poster might have a large number of followers / subscribers on Ozbargain who will vote up the deal because they received a notification on their deal posts.
Not everyone votes based on how good the deal is.

Some extremely good deals also expire quickly and don't even get the chance to hit front page.

    • It's interesting looking at the top deals - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/popular

Free things and KFC all the way down. Although I usually check the games that are free each week/month through Epic and Amazon anyway, so I don't need the reminder. The Supercheap deal was actually useful for me though.

  • I only browse the homepage unless I'm searching for something specific. Set to minimum 15 upvotes to appear. If it's something I'm actively looking for, upvotes don't matter. Negative comments do.

  • Actually, too many upvotes can make me skip it.

OzBargained is a verb for a reason 🤷‍♀️

no but if there are a few down votes i usually go 'read' the comments

Good deals get upvotes it’s simple

  • I would say most of the time it can, neg votes definitely

  • Yes. More likely to buy an Amazon item with thousands of five star reviews even though I know that's usually BS. But often on OZB something at RRP will get a lot of upvotes, so it's not a good strategy.

  • I ONLY shop at Hardly Normal.

Free coffee if a demo is on,

    Free product demonstrations,

Every pushy salesperson gets a clear SOLD message

Because they sell it to me

Sold according to the Murdoch press and SBS main advertising

Strange, the money ends up elsewhere…

I know I speak for every human on the earth when I say that the essence of this question is:

'Do their milkshakes bring all the boys to the yard?'

If not, then, well, the outcome is entirely predictable. I trust that will render the matter crystal clear for you.

    You're welcome

  • I dont think there is an option there for me to vote my stance . But the short answer is yes. I don't ignore low count votes, I still look through them. But high voted deals catch my attention and I do get influenced to buy things where lots of people have a positive review.

The last thing I bought that I didn't need got great value out of was this

  • Only in I’d be more likely to see it if it had a lot of votes. But I still assess whether it’s a good deal and something I want independently.

  • Depends if I need it or if an impulse buy.

  • No. But if the product looks interesting I'll read through the comments/reviews.

It’s not a bargain if you don’t need it

  • Do Number of Upvotes Impact Your OzBargain Purchase?

Yes. The more upvotes, the more likely I am to miss out..

  • Some sad OzBargainers would have you believe that your success in life is measured by how many votes you get on your deals. If you get less than others then you're less successful in life.

Sometimes the really good deals getting no votes is beneficial for us to score up the bargains but certainly disappointing when the good deals go unnoticed.

If any deal I post can help people pay the least for something then it is a good post.

The upvotes do tend to influence but the comments are more important. If people are downvoting I want to know why. If it’s some “they are all woke” BS then it makes me more likely to buy.

Seems like I’ve butt hurt a rightwinger who misuses woke.

  • I wrote this comment on my Motorola G54. I feel that answers your question.

  • I used to only upvote posts that I would order. Now I also upvote the good deals that interest me the most, especially ATL posts.
