How are the prices ? Is it reasonable or jacked up ?

    • Jacked… Hard

      At least for Gundam.

      • +3

If its out of print and rarer, that's just how it is. Here's the big HG Gundam Chimera, about $76 shipped, typically $125 in Australia.

I got this for ¥7700 from gundam base 2 weeks ago. Prices are jacked compared to 9 months ago.

          • +3

@Nalar: That was my point though. It's out of cycle now. You wouldn't find the HGUC Nightingale at retail, and its very likely not at Gundam Base anymore.

            • -1

@Gehirn: It was re-released the day I went, it's back in the market.

              • +4

@Nalar: Yes but they only keep them on shelves for a couple weeks. If its re-released at Gundam Base only it barely impacts the secondary market. Similarly, if its a wider re-release to Yodobashi, Bic, etc. stock rotates out after two weeks to the new range. They don't list it online, it's gone.

I have seen this firsthand many times. A couple years ago the SD Neo Zeong was re-released. At the time there may be 1 at every second Surugaya or Bookoff for 5,000-6,000yen. Or you could walk into Bic for the two weeks and grab one for 2,000yen. Even though the stores still had stock they get taken off shelves for whatever is the new wave. Surugaya and Bookoff didn't change at all, it was still a rare kit to see.

It's 500yen in exchange for free shipping regardless of size/weight to Australia. That is a deal.

    Any bargains?

  • torn between buying used cds for easy shipping or buying new to support the artists

    • Both.

  • -1

huh, so lot of the items are USED… so its kinda like a japanese ebay or something.. searched NEW only, range greatly reduced.. seems to be more USED then NEW on there on the few searches i did..

    • +7

Its a second hand retailer in Japan, they have stores in most large cities. They sell new items, but they also buy. USED products are often new or in as new condition though.

    • Used items are generally in very good condition in Japan. I've bought plenty of items in 'used' condition and they are like brand new.

  • +1

There are significantly fewer products and higher prices on their international site compared to their local site, which only ships within Japan. Wondering if there are any forwarding services from Japan to Australia.

    • There are

    • Yes there are many services that will receive a package for you and then you can choose what shipping service you want from there and once paid it gets sent to your address. It's pretty easy.

    PSA
These free shipping deals happen every week or two, generally on weekends.
Almost all items are used, condition is generally good.
Prices on the English site (free shipping deals) are marked up to compensate, and the selection is much more limited compared to the Japanese site. The Japanese site however only ships domestically. You will therefore need a proxy to make purchases for you, or purchase and ship to a forwarder.
Forwarders and proxies can be expensive, and so even while marked up in price the free shipping may be worth it depending on what you order. You will have to do the calculations yourself.
The absolute cheapest option generally is to purchase from the Japanese site with a good and cheap forwarder or proxy, then ship to Australia via Japan Post Surface Parcel (boat shipping) which takes around 6 weeks to Melbourne.

    • Yeah I noticed after posting my deal on it the other day. Its actually been going for about 6 months.

      • +1

They've actually been doing this since August or September last year.

    • Any forwarder suggestions besides Blackship (unfortunately they don't offer surface parcel)? I've also noticed that most of the popular proxies charge GST on your order, which is a bit of a pain - not sure if that applies to the forwarders yet

      • Blackship does have surface parcel, they call it "Parcel Post Seamail". In any case I would not recommend them because they are extremely expensive. Quite frankly I have no idea why anybody uses them.
Sadly I don't have any forwarder recommendations as I haven't found one that was any cheaper than my current proxy. Comparing prices is difficult because of different fees and different inclusions.
One downside to all of this is that your customer service and warranty goes out the window really, so do be careful with anything expensive you buy.

      • I used "from Japan" and was able to get surface for around $30 compared to $55-60 by air.

    • Any way to tell when the next deal is?

    • Thank you - I just missed this one and was kicking myself over the huge shipping fee - I guess I'll wait and hope for another one.

    Any bargains?

  • What is it like buying used gundams?

    • +4

Their 'used' gundams are no different than new. They're unassembled, just bought from someone selling it off. They only sell a small amount of actually used gundams.

      • I thought they resembled it and sell it used….

    • +1

I visited Book-Off stores in Japan. While they sell alot of kits unassembled, they also sell kits which are in clear bags that have are assembled.

I bought an assembled hello hello kitty zaku SD for AUD2

      • I like book-off.

Hard-Off is even better - more house hold stuff, electronics, etc

Thanks for the post, picked up the PS5 version of Yakuza Gaiden for $42AUD

thanks — have ordered CD soundtracks. been looking for these for years.
hoping they arrive with no issues whatsoever.

    Overnight parts from japan!

  • +1

Thanks. I bought a whole bunch of old school Famicom and Mario anniversary stuff that I needed for my collection. Around $200AUD for 10 or so products, which would have cost maybe 30-40% more if I bought them separately from ebay.

Bought a used artbook (that retails for $80~ new) for $14 delivered. And delivery from surugaya is literally 3 days from order date to my house, it's pretty insane.

  • How does GST collection happen with this? They say they dont do it?

    • +1

They don't. I've made several orders ranging from $50 to $250 since they started doing this promotion last year, and I've always only paid the amount stated at checkout.

  • +2

Finally bought a bunch of Asian Kung-Fu Generation CDs I've been trying to track down for ages, $45 total is insane (here's hoping they actually arrive!)!

    Love the minimum web design

  • +3

People complaining about free shipping from a notoriously fantastic and cheap second hand store. No, there are very unlikely to be any eneloops or powerbanks.

  • Better to get directly from jp site and use forward service. The jaked price is insane lol

  • Do the used Japanese Anime blu-rays have English subtitles?

    • Very rarely. Best to check sites like Bluray.com for the details.

  • -7

Hmm. $5 sales commission looks an awful lot like a replacement for shipping costs.
Sure, it's not much, but I generally don't pay ANY sales commission…. or postage/shipping costs (that's their cost - they are saving on bricks and mortar rent after all).

    • +7

Shipping costs from Japan to Australia is usually $20 to $30 and sometimes $40 AUD, only paying $5 is a literal steal.

    • +2

It's shipped by DHL and goes from Japan to your door in 2-3 days, regardless of number of items and weight as WinterStar said that is a lot more than $5. If you're not paying postage/shipping costs like you say you either paid a membership fee to someone, or it's added into the item price.

You also get the saving on the item you purchased. Obviously though you have to use your discretion that not all of the near 4,500,000 items on the site are a deal.

they are saving on bricks and mortar rent after all.

This is a chain of physical stores.

For anyone learning Japanese this is a great source for manga in Japanese at greatly reduced prices compared to buying somewhere in Australia. e.g. They have the range of Yotsubato! for $5 each. They are second hand but what I’ve received so far has been fine quality. In Australia they are at least $16 each at a book store in the city, $23 on Amazon.

    • +1

      love Yotsubato!

  • Is anybody else getting this error message when checking out?

There’s an issue with the shipping address. Please correct it. 410301: Products not available between this origin and destination (network segment)

    • Yes I am seeing that too

    • It seems to be if any items has only 1 item in stock.

      • You are right. My item is a single one too, although I am sure it is just available as one to purchase per cart or account. IE more in stock as it is a new, common item
