I just ordered a second one of these for a family overseas flight. Regular price is $35.99, so a bit of a saving. I have tested it out on a few different bluetooth headphones and earphones at home and it connects to all of them. Hopefully it will work well on Emirates in-flight movies. It will connect two bluetooth headphones at the same time if you want to watch the same movie with someone else.
Corded headphones are extra annoying on flights with meal trays and people sliding past to go to the toilet etc.

    How does this compare to:

Deal of the day: UGREEN Bluetooth 5.0 Transmitter Receiver 2 in 1 Wireless Aux BT Adapter Bendable 3.5mm Jack to Bluetooth Adaptor Built-in Battery and Mic Handsfree Talking for Car TV Home Stereo Speakers Headphones https://amzn.asia/d/4PoZXlZ

    • Dual pairing maybe

      • Dual pairing seems to be supported (picture 5)

        • +2

If the intended purpose is airplane, better to have a flexible cable then so it doesn't break

  • Do any planes offer bluetooth as standard on their entertainment system? Or do all need this sort of device?

    • -1

All will need this kind of AirFly device. New fitouts are coming, see i.e. Qantas' Project Sunrise video. Bluetooth being standard is a couple of years away at minimum I reckon.

      • +5

Emirates, JAL, Delta and United's most recent seats all have Bluetooth built into the IFE system.

        • +3

Was on Korean Air a couple of weeks ago and they also had bluetooth as part of their IFE.

        • With Emirates it depends on the flight. Some of them seem to have while others don't. On quite a few flights to Europe now Emirates has not had bluetooth on the flight between Australia and Dubai, but sometimes had it between Dubai and Europe.

          • @trippy: Yes, I said their most recent seats. It will take years for them to roll it out to the whole fleet.

      • +1

Heaps already don't need it and I have flown plenty that don't and can pair airpods, Sony and Bose etc.

    • +4

Yes, but very few. E.g. Japan Airlines' new A350, as well as some United, Qatar and some Cathay Pacific aircraft. But it's not common yet.

  • +1

I have used these alternatives to AirFly products, its a world of a difference.

If you can, pick up an AirFly Pro.

    • I have an AirFly Pro and find it to be super glitchy and annoying to use. Surely this couldn't be any worse

      • I replaced an Airfly Pro with one of these, which has been great. And is on a lightning deal now :) https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09HRGYCSS/

        • Do you happen to know if it supports AptX-LL in dual-link mode? I couldnt see it anywhere on the page, so I assume AptX-LL is only available to a single headphone (not in dual-link to two headphones at the same time).

          • @caprimulgus: I don't believe so. It doesn't cause Airpod Pros to conk out like the Airfly, though

    • +4

Have you used any UGreen alternatives?

I’ve found their other products do what they say on the tin well

  • +7

You will need this additional "[Airplane Headphone Audio] (https://www.amazon.com.au/Tersely-Airplane-Headphone-Connect…) Adapter " too work.

    • Beat me to it I found out the hard way last year

      • ha..ha……. lol. Same I did the hard way as you do….

    • +1

I didn't know they still use those dual mono plugs.
I bring the adaptor with me but every flight I've been on in the last 5 years or so at least has had standard stereo sockets.

Guess it depends which airline and how old the plane is.

      • Yes, I find that I never need them anymore.

  • +1

I tried a similar Bluetooth transmitter product and the airfly a couple of years ago in a plane; with AirPods Pro, and both were out of sync with the video enough for it to be too annoying to use. Stick with wired. Unless the newer Bluetooth 5.3 fixes it, but I doubt it. Because the source doesn’t know it’s being sent by Bluetooth so doesn’t know how to adjust for the latency.

    • +4

The device and your headphones need to support aptX Low Latency which is designed to deliver a latency of less than 40 milliseconds.

Or one of the other variants of aptX which are low latency

    • +1

I used one a couple of days ago with Airpods Pro. It synced fine, I didn’t notice any latency (not saying there wasn’t any.) I was amazed that I hadn’t bought it earlier.

      This: https://amzn.asia/d/bOybsAu

It’s bluetooth 5.3 and can connect to two pair of headphones. Also comes with airplane adapter.

      • Similar experience here with this one really happy with it https://amzn.asia/d/e2YzT23

      • Hey, do you know / are you able to test whether this supports dual-link AptX-LL (ie. can use AptX Low Latency for two headphones at the same time)?

I know some of their other devices do support it, but just wanted to confirm (couldnt see it mentioned anywhere). Some devices support AptX-LL and also support dual-link, but dont support AptX-LL while connected to two devices (will default to a lower AptX).

        • +1

I will try to test it and get back to you

      • Hi. What charging port does it have? Can you confirm it is still working while charging? Thanks

        • USB C

I didn’t try to use it while charging, so unsure of that. Battery lasts a long time

  • +1

    How's the latency?

  • What's the difference between this and one of those little USB dongles? Just the 3.5mm jack?

    • Where would you plug the USB in on a plane?

Those usb things are for PC use

    • +2

Are you referring to the USB-C dongle that lets your phone have an AUX output?

This device lets you send the audio wirelessly over Bluetooth to your headphones rather than connecting wired headphones. A USB-C to AUX adapter wouldn't work in this scenario

      • +1

Ah, I see, makes sense. Thank you!

  • +2

Don’t forget to pair it with the airline headphone adapter. Many airlines still have two 3.5mm outlets for sound (left and right).

  • Does it convert the regular speakers into Bluetooth speakers?

    • +1

You can do that with receiving mode, provided your speakers have an AUX input

  • +2

This seems better for a little more

    There’s also 5% discount

    • Do you mean because of Apt-X?

      • Bluetooth 5.3 and supports two headphones.

    • Has anyone tried these? Is there any lag between audio video? And does it work well with connecting 2 Bluetooth earphones? I will be connecting to a TV for sound on 2x earphones or connecting to a Pc for playback on Bluetooth receiver.

  • -2

All the branded and unbranded over the ear bluetooth headphones already have 3.5mm port and comes with audio cable. Just need to buy an audio airplane adaptor which can be bought cheap from Temu for $2. Using cable with headphones, no audio issue whatsoever. I got Sony's XM4's which came with the cable and adaptor. And used few times with cable in plane without any issues.
These one's are only for in-ear bluetooth earphones but then there might be few issues using it inside the plane.
Neverthless its a good gadget to use in cars or outside to connect with portable speakers.

    • You seem to miss the point? People buys this to go wireless!

  • Thanks OP just bought 2
Been looking for this type of product but was worried on how long battery can last, this one seems to be pretty well with 28hours on paper

  • These sort of devices are great for planes. I got the Taotronics TT-BA08 Bluetooth 5.0 transmitter in 2019 for AU$40 back in the day and have used it across many Qantas and Cathay flights.
I think the Cathay flights I took had a single 3.5mm port just below the screen and that the one time I had the traditional double port plug, I think I just plugged the device into one of the slots and it works for both ears on my BT device. Not sure why.

  • The first question you need to ask is what low latency codec (if any) your headphones use.

I went for the Avantree Soundjet R2 - aptX low latency, aptX and SBC audio, was a lot cheaper than Airfly when I looked.

  • anyone know if virgin flight 787-800 would have the bluetooth connectivity?

    • You mean 737-800 right? Did a quick search and Virgin Australia doesn’t have any 787s yet.
If we’re talking about 737-800 then no. Didn’t even have screens.

Air NZ had Bluetooth and worked a treat, loved it.

      • Oops sorry, yes it 737-800. I assume there are still IFE with WiFi connection to your devices onboard?

        • Yes you’re right.

  • -5

Most of you guys should use a wire and spend this cash on the extra leg room seats…. :-)

    • Tell me which airline offers an upgrade for less than $28.79…I know Virgin charges $70.

  • -5

Use the $28.79 to whatever the extra leg room seat costs.

    • -1

      Nah.

      • -2

Okay pay $28.79 not to use a wire, for a product that you don't know is even compatible, if it doesn't lag (plenty of comments say it does), or if it will not be obsolete or if you even remember to bring on the flight.! Hand back your OzBargain membership I say if you buy this, 65 upvotes pretty much says an average product.

        7,000 + comments, 5 posts, just sayin.

        • You're the coolest guy in the room.

  • Used this Avantree Relay on my previous Japan flight and worked well with the AirPods Pro 2. Although it is a more expensive option. Got it for 47 last year. Was able to switch between the Nintendo switch and the IFE easily with a slider. It supports aptx and has the dual pin adapter. https://amzn.asia/d/2YbF1sl

  • I'm surprised so many people use IFE.

Personally I've got my phone and tablet for all my media consumption which pair to my BT headphone just fine :)

  • Emirates in flight entertainment allows you to connect screens to watch a film simultaneously with the person next to you. I don’t think this will work if your family is in multiple rows etc.

  • What about the sound quality?

Interested to get one, but had not quite good experience with similar device - bluetooth transmitter / receiver that enabled me to connect my earphone / pc speakers with 3.5mm jack (plugged to this device) to connect to my phone / laptop. The sound was okay for listening the audio book, but not great at all for music.

    • -1

I seriously don't get it…don't you BYO/download your music offline to listen to rather than relying on the limited range on IFE?

      • Sorry for not being clear in my previous post.

I'm considering to buy this device because I still want to use my (old) PC speakers without bluetooth capability (in my bookshelf) to connect remotely to my laptop (located at the opposite side of the bookshelf).

  • I really need something like this for my home TV, we have a baby and if we watch with any volume on the TV it will wake him.

This would be great as we could both watch the same thing together with wireless earbuds. Only thing is my TV doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone port. I guess I could get a converter, but there's probably other options out there with the RCA type plugs.

    Any advice?

    • Same for me. Waiting for suggestions on what device is available to connect to TV with USB and Hdmi port and can play sound via Bluetooth on 2 earphone.

    • I use a Google TV/Firestick which has BT built in and connect. I've never tried more than one headset thou….

      • Wait a minute, I just looked up Chromecast and it looks like you can do this with multiple devices with it! I will have to give it a try when I get home.

Even just a single device I would be happy with, could finally watch footy on the actual TV again.

        • Let us know how you go with it. I do have Chromecast as well

          • @amsaini15: Quickly tried it at lunch time with one device and it worked. Man I can't believe I've been watching all this shit on my PC, I could have been watching from the comfort of my couch. Will give it a try with multiple devices tonight.

  • Don't planes use those weird double pronged 3.5mm headphone jacks?

    • +1

many have now provide single prong jack
many others that still use 2 prongs seems to works with single prong (and get stereo), except for really old flights

    • +1

You just use an adaptor, I needed one for a QF international flight recently
