How do people keep track of cables and the wattage they are rated for? And what happens if you use the wrong one?

I've now got a few kicking around and don't want to blow something up.

    • it won't blow up. just use 1 cable for everything

    • There are some usb cables that display the wattage. I need one of those.

    • +3

They won’t blow up. They’ll just charge slower or transfer data slower. What I have a problem with is that some cables are fast charging/slow data and other cables are slow charging/fast data. There are no fast charging/fast data cables (at a reasonable price anyway). I can’t remember which of my cables are better at charging and which are better at data.

      • Kmart at one stage sold ANKO branded 60W PD cables (42899204) which also transferred at 10Gpbs (USB 3.1 gen 2) - sadly not offered anymore. Catch sell a no-name brand which does 60W but only 5Gbps for $17 but unknown quality.

    • Important devices, I stick with original cables. Thunderbolt 3/4/USB 4 cables, they generally have marking on the connectors.

When you used the inferior ones, the following could happen:

      • Fast charging doesn't initiate properly all the time.
      • It charges at lower voltage and current.
      • (for devices which enforce PD 3.0 or above) you can get a warning.

I have multiple USB-C meters which can read the cable rating (if it is emarked) or do trigger test. When you look at some of those 3rd party cables through these meters, you understand why they are cheaper. I had a cheap Amazon Basics USB-IF "certified" cables, it consistently charges at lower voltage and current compared to original cable and at times, Apple devices refuse to fast charge using that cable despite being USB-IF certified. It was $1.80 USD when I bought it.

      • Got a link to one of your meters? I'd be keen to get one and then tag all the USB-C cables I use with a label maker - not many of them state their wattage on them and now that I have a USB-C powered laptop I'm keen not to mess things up unnecessarily.

  • Is there a power adapter for multiple usbc cables carrying 140w

  • +1

    I don't need another one I don't need another one….

  • need video transfer for quest

  • Are 4m fast USB cables a thing?

    • Yes, thunderbolt or the occulus cables.

    • Yes, Gerry sells 4m Monster cables.

  • still 480Mb/s? how many cables do we need>

  • Any 5M cables? I need a long one :(

    • let me know if anyone finds good deal hehe. Need aprox 3-4 m

  • I have 2 of them. They are good. The black colour off the ends of them has rubbed off and they are sorta black silver now

  • Aliexpress has good $6 40gps and 240w cables

    • Too early to tell those are good quality. They might be e-marked to support higher voltage, but I haven't got any USB-C/PD devices which actually need / support 240W. Less than 2 meters 40Gbps cables are passive cables. A lot of the short length ones look dodgy.

      • Fair enough they are working good for now, but im not sure about their 240w capability as well.

I found the best trick for USB-C charging is use a DELL USB-C laptop charger.

They work with Iphone 15 perfect and super quick charge.

No need to worry about getting chargers and cables.
