Woolworths 66%+ off: go bananas! $2.99+ ->$0.99!

200

(Please don't flame me for this one)
Amazing deal this weekend - 99c for a kilo of bananas. 2/3 off an already cheap price!
This is a Woolworths in northern Sydney. This deal will sell very quickly. Recently $2.99-$3.99/kg. Coles had a similar deal last week.

[Country of origin: Australia. Hope this helps those who rate the deal on that basis]

  • Is this at all Woolworths? Where did you find out about this deal?

    • I walked into the Woolworths (most entries are now near the fruit & veg) and noticed someone refilling the bananas aisle-end.

Amazingly, I find most of these specials by walking around a shop and seeing a promotion or promotional sticker.
Doesn't everyone else do the same when shopping, especially for seasonal produce?

      • My weekly shopping is dictated by the Reduce price and specials stickers. I only buy milk and eggs on regular price.

        • Same.. i'm a specials junkie. Have you noticed that either Australian Fresh or Daily Juice are either on special… they seem to rotate… thing is.. both are made by Berri in the same Place. I wonder how much other brands in competition are actually the same company.

      • Yes I do, my question was mainly to find out if this is Australia wide as it could be store specific.

  • Supurb value for 100% AUSTRALIAN BANANAS!'

    Won't get better for months…

Don't want to flame you but
    - Due to quarantine restriction, we only have Australia bananas here.
    - You probably find similar price at local green grocery. I don't normal buy fruits&vegies from supermarket.

      • That is good to know about the Australian bananas.
      • The greengrocers that I've been to don't have that price. If you are very lucky you might be able to get a 2kg bag of overripe mushy bananas for $2.
I have not voted positive for the deal because it appears to be a promotion at one Woolies store only.
      • See my notes in the deal - Coles in Wynyard (Sydney) had a similar deal Friday last week, so I figure it may be available at least at most Sydney stores (at least those supplied by the same depot as my shop in nthn Sydney).

I'll try to keep you posted on non-supermarket specials, but I figure the deals are more useful where there are a number of shops, so you don't need to get to just 1 shop.

I can report on Harris Farm - there are a few shops in Sydney and it may benefit some readers.

[AFAIK Harris Farm is not owned by a duopolist chain, but correct me if I'm wrong and I've offended someone!]

    • timhn:
Yes, my comment was tongue in cheek. Sorry you missed that!
I remember $16+/kg banana prices of 2006, when imports were not allowed despite virtually no local bananas!

Did you read my comments in the post, where I recommended people visit the local greengrocer to see if this was a result of a cheap current market price?
I also mentioned Coles because they had a similar deal a week ago (Wynyard NSW) and I figured local fruit shops would try to do something similar.

Sorry if this post has offended those who hate the supermarkets.

    • timhn,
I was sent on a shopping supplies run (not for fruit etc) and just happen to live just a walk away from the duopolist #1 supermarket.
The also-ran supermarkets and the indy greengrocers are not within walking distance :(.

Please see my comments below; '99c/kg Woolies bananas' just happened to be a chance discovery during my shop for other items, hence sharing it here today.

I hadn't realised until this week that deals in supermarkets are a very touchy issue for some who replied to my recent Coles special. ;) You learn!

  • You might have imported bananas at your local supermarket very soon…..
    http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2009/03/05/agreement-to-import…

  • They've been 99c off and on now for about a month. Nothing special really. No need to post something up everytime a supermaket knocks 50c off a can of baked beans etc….

  • Was at Vic Market today, $1/kg for bananas so this deal is very good.

    • so you save yourself 1 cent Neil. absolute bargain mate :)

  • Yeah it's a fairly good deal as well. I've had to shop around to get decent prices on fresh fruit and vege but I may stock up on this. Still can't believe so many people cracked a massive sad face because an item wasn't Australian last time.

  • To be honest I'd still rather support my local fruit n veg store.

Woolies charge around $2.99 everyday for 99c bananas then once in a while they drop them to 99c.

    BIG deal

But wait there's more - hey its not at my Woolies they want $1.98 damn - I'm subsidising the rest of you'se here

No bargain for me. Back to the local grocer or Aldi

mmm….. for those getting the 99c deal, must be a competitor in town they want to squash

If squashes are also on sale then its wholesale slaughter

    pardon the puns

  • If you're in Sydney - you cant beat Flemington markets on a Sunday for realllly cheap Fruit and Veg.

Bananas are 99c every weekend (have fallen below this at times).

If you can make the trip its well worth it!!

    Im heading there now

    • We used to do a Vege run there but we;d have to get up early in the morning, that being said we used to do it for fresh seafood as well.

  • Thanks for the constructive replies. I hope the result is that some readers can go out and get bananas for this deal, wherever you prefer to shop. :)
