Spotify - Free Streaming on Tablets & Mobiles - (Shuffle Mode Only)

1520

Play any artist, album, or playlist in shuffle mode for free.

Spotify have just announced that both Smart Phones and Tablets can now stream any artist, album or playlist. The "catch" is that you don't get to pick the order and as a free user you can only play tracks in "shuffle mode".

You get 6 skips per hour as a free user.

Technically not a 'bargain' but I can personally now give up my subscription service and drop down to this new free use access. I think a few others might be in the same boat and appreciate knowing.

  • Nice deal

  • I think I'll be stopping my subscription too.

Does this mean you can't just play one track though? For example; can I just stream one particular track via mobile?

    • +2

Correct. You cannot pick a specific track. You can pick an album the track you want features on and hope it will come up or even use your 6 free 'skips' per hour.

    • +11

I was going to suggest making a playlist with only that one song in it… but spotify is sneaky and fills out playlists that are shorter than 15.

Alternatively, you can add the same song to its own playlist 15 times. ¬_¬

What are you even talking about? If you have a membership to cancel that means you paid for premium, which means you can already select on a per track basis and use full functionality. For free users, they never used to be able to do anything on mobile until now.

"I think I'll be stopping my subscription too."

      • I'd be stopping my subscription too if I had one.

  • Do they play ads during this free mobile streaming dealio?

    • yes

      • +2

Thanks mate. though I managed to get my answer in the 2+ years since I posted this :P

It has ads. Too annoying for me. I'd rather revert primary listening on a local library.

    • +2

Just use a US VPN and pay the cheaper monthly rater. ;)

      • I had a large supply of Spotify premium codes from a Coke freebie promotion thing a few years back..

But gave away heaps to friends and now I'm pretty much out.

The thing is I listen to music maybe once a week nowadays for an hour or so. Not really worth paying for a monthly subscription.

      • Sorry what? Could you elaborate?

        • +2
          1. Use Hola.org addon and choose US VPN
          2. Create Rdio/Spotify account
          3. Buy cheaper US subscription
          4. Profit (Well not really but save)
  • can you confirm it works? I read on androidpolice it doesnt work for canadians…

Working for me on my Note 2 here in Oz.

I had Spotify Premium to use it on my mobile. After trying it out for quite some time, and repeated requests to put one of their features in, I cancelled my sub out of frustration.

The music you download for offline play, downloads to your phone's device memory…even if you have an external storage.

So if you are an android user who flashes custom roms frequently, you have to redownload your libraries every single time you flash a rom. There is no way to back up the music directory.

There is a third party app which lets you move the folder to your sd card by creating a dummy image link in the phone memory, while linking it to your sd card, but after a new rom install, Spotify doesn't understands 'restore'. Even if I restore the entire music folder, it redownloads each and every song..often not over writing the files.

    :\

    • You reminded me that I also hated this - then I read this post - http://community.spotify.com/t5/Help-Android/Android-Trouble…
Haven't tried changing ROM's with it, but not much dev on my I9295 anyway, so this works for me.

    • You can easily get it to download to your SD card. It's built into the app as a hidden option. I've definitely got mine all saved to my external SD.

However Spotify didn't recognize the downloaded files after flashing a new rom anyway, even though they were there, so it wouldn't help you.

      Hi peepz

I had a similar issue but titanium backup can actually link your downloaded files to your spotify account after a flasb

You need to restore your android id to what it was prior to your Rom flash

See link below - hope that helps

      Worked great for me :)

Check out Pandora if you're just after random playlists. Free on mobile with very minimal ads. I've heard 2 so far in the month I've been using it.

    • Agreed on this. Only reason I'm interested in this new Spotify feature is because you can select by artist and album too which Pandora can't do.

    • +1 for Pandora. Fantastic quality. Ads are almost non existent. But I think you can select particular artist. I use it for 2 hrs everyday.

    • Pandora is my most used app by far. Love it! My playlist knows me so well now that I rarely need to skip.

    • I'm also a Pandora fan. I was ready to pay for higher bitrates but annoyingly that's not available on devices such as ipad or my Sony stereo.

  • Just installed on my ipad my playlist plays in order + i could turn on offline mode as well?

    • +2

If I recall correctly, you get 48 hours premium free when you install and run it for the first time.

      • Same as dweebz, but I've already used my 48 hour trial, and Premium doesn't seem to have activated on the PC client.

      • You can also get a two month free trial… I'm not sure if this was a limited offer or something, but I'm still on it till the end of December. Will be cancelling to use this free stuff now though :D

  • Spotify and Pandora are great for discovering new music, but if you decide that you like something, please buy it properly (CD, Soundcloud, iTunes, BP Music, etc). Spotify returns 2/5 of FA to the musicians. It's awesome, far better than the radio, but please don't forget the musos. Otherwise one day there won't be any more bands and music will be all Skrillex.

    • The horror!

    • -1

Honestly, I'm waiting for the day when artists realise how much they are getting screwed over and move to some more direct methods.. Personally hoping that these online radio stations push it sooner. :P

Oh, and in a similar vain - http://torrentfreak.com/russell-brand-get-my-new-dvd-from-th…

      • Which is why Thom Yorke pulled out of Spotify. Musos get a pittance on such services. My mate is an indie muso (gasp!) and doesn't get jack all. It's mere cents per play.

        • +2

If you're an indie band with no exposure, no-one's going to be buying your debut album anyway. Plus, signing up to Spotify doesn't preclude you from selling your music via iTunes. You know what's worse than a little money from Spotify/Rdio? No money from pirates.

    • but it's not often you'll see Billy Bragg supporting a corporation!

      http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/nov/07/billy-brag…

  • Also if you have a US iTunes account you can enable iTunes Radio.

    • only on ipad/phone i assume samurai?
I don't see anything about iTunes on android?

      • Yes that's right, forgot to say. It's on the ios7 music app.

  • cheers op

  • This is awesome. The "radio" mode has been my go-to for a long time now. No more need to pay.

    • -2

People here that complain R just 2 hard to satisfy!!!

      I agree with U - awesome!!

To have the ability to download any and all music U want - awesome … and thank you SPOTIFY!!!

    • +1

      Like a meercat?

      • +2

        Don't even sound same!

        • +2

          Simples!

As someone who understands that advertisements are often the only way to monetise content on the internet, I'm usually okay with them but Spotify's are particularly obnoxious. The ad: song ratio is comparable to any FM radio station last I used it. Ponied up for the premium subscription. $13 a month for all you can eat music is still a bargain, it's less than the price for a single album and streams to virtually any device, offline storage and discovery.

  • +1

Shuffle only is only on Phones. Tablets function the same as computers now, ie. pick a track.

What I want to know, can't bothered testing, is how they detect a device being a "tablet". Considering it's so easy to change an Androids DPI to 160…

  • Cool. Never used spotify before. Free version also available for desktops.

  • Used it on my 30 min ride today and didn't get any ads.

  • How the hell do I cancel my spotify sub anyways, and can I set it just not to renew. Because I got 9 days left on my month. I obviously don't want to cancelk now and lose what u already paid for.

    • +2

When you cancel it won't remove your existing status. You'll be able to keep using it for the next 9 days for example.

  • +1

    Why don't people use Grooveshark???

The mobile site is free to listen and make playlist on your android or iphone. If you want to listen on the app you have to pay 9 bucks a month.

    • +3

Because content is sourced by the public. Ie. shitty quality audio and organised. I had a $3 dollar membership because I joined at launch, still cancelled it.

    • +1

Cause it sucks to use on Android last I checked.
And it's not legit, it's using someone elses pirated content techinically.

  • I've been using Guvera on my iPhone, free (ad supported) I hook it up to the car stereo and I've been playing all the songs I want, it's Australian owned too

    • But their app (last time I checked) is buggy as hell, they have limited content and take ages to buffer. I used Guvera's desktop site from launch until Spotify came here.

  • This seems decent but what I've done is just get a new trial subscription every month (as bothersome as it may seem). You get full mobile streaming and can just make a new account every month when it expires (just remember to unsubscribe at the start).

  • Seeing as the OP gave the iOS and Android app link here's the link for Windows Phone - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/store/app/spotify/10f2995d…

    • in the same was as you are forced to buy a christmas present for a step kid because you bought gifts for the real ones.

  • Sick, I'm on the premium trial but only use it occasionally, and usually just for Radio/random songs. This is perfect, definitely will cancel before paying :)

  • Does it mean we can use Spotify offline ?

    • Nope. That's still a premium feature.

  • -1

    html5.grooveshark.com > you're welcome.

    • +1

That's not much different to saying

      thepiratebay.pe > you're welcome.

Grooveshark isn't legal. And it's useless on most mobiles that I've seen.

    • +1

Grooveshark has already been mentioned and it's terrible. You're better of sourcing you music from youtube if you're happy with such sub-par quality music and experience.

  • +2

To anyone considering stopping your subscription, think twice, as you won't get a good bitrate without one.

    • Yep, see below -

Spotify uses 3 quality ratings for streaming, all in the Ogg Vorbis format.

      ~96 kbps
      Normal quality on mobile.

      ~160 kbps
Desktop and web player standard quality.
      High quality on mobile.

~320 kbps (only available to Premium subscribers)
      Desktop high quality.
      Extreme quality on mobile.

  • Hmmm why did this deal pop up on my feedly feed again.

    • I'm wondering the same thing

  • I have a FREE premium app version of Spotify. That allows you to play songs for free (ONLINE mode only). NO ADS just inbox me, and I will upload it on Mediafire for you. It's not like other scam apks on Youtube or Internet.
