  • Good if you want a single knife however the 7 piece sets for $269 are better value…

depends entirely on whether you want the other knives or not…

many would argue individual knives are much better value than sets, because: 1) you don't have to spend money on knives you won't use, and 2) it allows you to spend more of your budget where it counts more (typically the chef's knife), and save money on less important/frequently used knives (such as bread knife, perhaps).

what is "better value" is entirely dependent on the person.

One of my Global knives snapped just above the handle a few weeks ago, after just a year of light use. Not an uncommon problem, if you do a Google search. Currently awaiting a warranty replacement, but I don't have a huge deal of confidence in this brand anymore.

  • Good deal for Global knife!

I've kept this in my bookmark for a long time (no disposable income yet): http://japanesechefsknife.com/FKMSeries.html#FKM

I think they are also made in japan. The website has many other exotic japan-made knives which looks better?

FAQ on the website says shipping is USD7.

  • But will it cut through a shoe?

  • i'm not going to say global are bad knives, because they're not. but just a warning to those who think these are some amazing knife brand, they are not that either. there's a lot of hype surrounding global knives, but for your money you're much better off going with something else. I like Shun knives personally, although they're pretty mainstream these days and everyone is like 'ohmahgersh shun' - and i'm sure there are better knives out there (a few I wouldn't mind owning!) But really it comes down to personal taste as well as knife quality. so i recommend at the very least hold a knife before buying it.
