    Good one!!
Nero is one of the best, but I was using the one available by default.
There are many free alternatives as well, but for 90% of the cases, this free version should suffice.
But I am pretty sure there will be a "wife" screen -Oops, a NAG screen - asking you to upgrade ever so often ;-)
    Cheers,

PS: No offense ladies, just Friday humour.

  • Great find! Yes Nero is prob the best burning software out there!

For those that don't need a 55MB burning program, ImgBurn is lighter (2MB), less featured and free.

    • +1

+1 for ImgBurn, Nero died along time ago imo.

      • +1

I used to use nero all the time for making DVD's, encoding & burning. I upgraded from the OEM version that came with my burner to the full version on the US website But it has been months since I have fired it up. IMGBURN is faster and easier and for encoding I use RIPBOT264 or handbrake and they are all free. and best of all I dont have to download the 400Mb update every other month like I do with Nero.

    • Ok, soooo…which is better?

    • +1

IMGBurn is great for making images and burning them, but CDBurnerXP is my favourite bloatware free burning application. It's well established and has all the functionality you could need to burn CDs/DVDs with a intuitive UI.

However, I might just have to check out this new version of Nero. Wonder if it's like Nero Express or a bit more powerful..

      • I second CDBurnerXP. Never had a problem with it, and it's free.

    • +1

Great find for those on weaker machines.

    • ImgBurn also only does images, it doesn't do 95% of the shit Nero does.

      • +2

quantocks, you have misunderstood my comment. I did not suggest ImgBurn is an exact substitute for Nero, deliberately noting that ImgBurn is "less featured".

Note that this particular limited free version of Nero 9 apparently "doesn’t do 95% of the shit Nero does" either.

      • Imgburn is not limited to images.

It can burn individual files to a CD just like you can in nero.

My Nod32 reported it is spyware infested.

    • +1

      I believe that's called a false positive.

      • Nope. I checked it out and it definitely comes with what Nod32 alerts. Online scanners and forums report the same thing.

I found this free version less usefull than the previous versions. It just gives you the Smart Start Wizard interface. It does not give you control over any of the fetures like cd/dvd read and burning speed. Ignore read errors and other options like you get with the nero burning rom interface. It will always just read and burn at the maximum available speed. Unless there is something I am missing.

I think I'll just stick with Nero Burning Rom which is a more flexible system. Than the unfriendly wizard driven interface of the free version.

  • So the DVD authoring features are disabled?

  • why is it free? I mean you normally have to buy the program?
Is there a better version of Nero they are selling thus giving this for free?

    • Yes you do although it may come off as being "free" given so many drive manufacturers and OEM's bundle it with drives. The application itself, especially the full suite, is far from free however.

As for different versions. Yes they have a pretty large suite they sell. Whether it's better or not depends on your needs. I'd rather something simpler like Ashampoo than what I feel is a rather bloated Nero app.

  • +1

If you read the page, this "Free" version only lets you burn and copy discs…not the best freebie is it.

No different to other "Freeware" burning software.

  • -1

I've found Nero too clumsy/bloated for my liking these days… was a fan back in the v6 days. Now using Ashampoo which is fantastic.

    • -1

yeah, back in the v6 days, we all used to say "i'll burn it on nero for ya.. ok?"

  • oh wow!
    this is nice.
    Thank you.

I'll download it once I get home.

  • +1

    Try http://cdburnerxp.se

It's free and good. I've tried.

  • HI Guys,
Can anyone confirm whether it can burn AUDIO CD's ? Or do i have to buy a full verion for audio buring?
    Thanks.
    Tony.

    • +1

Just use windows media player or winamp.

Both can burn audio CD's easily

  • +2

For those who want to purchase Nero, yet don't want all the bloat, try Nero Lite/Micro: http://updatepack.nl/ (You need to provide a key, just as in the regular installer.)

However, ImgBurn is more than adequate for me.

(Windows 7 users: you can burn images without any extra programs now!)

  • Does this come with Nero Burning Rom?

    I can't stand the wizard.

    • This is a basic wizard driven interface for burning data and copying discs. Give me Nero Burning Rom any day. Its so much more flexible

Think I'll just stick to good old trusty nero 7.11.10.0 micro which works perfectly.

  • imgburn ftw

    burns dvd's and audio CD's

    creates ISO's

    small footprint

    everything i need

    and its free

  • +1

    Hello Everyone,
Just realized that this free copy has restrictions which means it only COPY files to a Disc and COPY Disc to Disc.

YOU CANNOT RIP/BURN MP3's to AUDIO CD's. So really not worth downloading 55Meg.

    Nothing is free!

    NOT WORTH DOWNLOADING.

    • Seriously? Ew, fail.

    • that's just stupid, I installed the new roxio the other day thinking it might be a better alternative to Nero nope, its a bloaty-mc-bloaty pants too not to mention it has some issues with windows 7 and my new 8 speed bluray burner

      • lmao was it the roxio creater DE thingy =O
i just installed that too lol havent used it yet though :(

    Shareware. Not a true Freebie.

    • How is it shareware if it never expires and you don't need to pay for it for it to continue?

They never said its the full suite.

      • +1

You are confusing "freeware" and "shareware".

        Noun
        shareware (uncountable)

        1. (computing): A type of software that is distributed without payment but is limited in any combination of functionality, availability, or convenience.

        Noun
        freeware (uncountable)

        1. (computing) Complete and functional software that does not require payment or other compensation (such as nags or advertising) for its use. Freeware may be a proprietary license with no access to the source code.

And while we're defining oh-so-complex computing terms:

        Noun
        bloatware

        1. (computing) Software that is overpacked with features (a result of feature creep) and therefore slow or unwieldy; software that occupies an excessive amount of memory or has a very large file size.

Selective qouting (compared to the wiki entry), the full entry at wikipedia has a more full definition.
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shareware:
          "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Look up shareware in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
The term shareware, popularized by Bob Wallace,[1] refers to proprietary software that is provided to users without payment on a trial basis and is often limited by any combination of functionality, availability or convenience."
          TRIAL BASIS.

This one from Nero AG isn't a trial, so NOT Shareware. I am NOT confused.

          • +1

@Zero Sydney: You are being more selective in your quoting than I am. Fine, I'll play.

The term shareware, popularized by Bob Wallace, refers to proprietary software that is provided to users without payment on a trial basis and is often limited by any combination of functionality, availability or convenience.

Shareware is usually offered as a trial version with certain features only available after the license is purchased, or as a full version, but for a trial period.

The words "free trial" or "trial version" are indicative of shareware.

So I don't know what definition of "trial" you have in your head, but if you managed to read past "trial basis" in your own quote, you'd see it defined by a more reliable source.

From the download website itself (Restrictions tab).

This version of Nero 9 contains simply data burning and disc copying features for CDs and DVDs. Additional features and functionality are available with an upgrade to Nero 9 full version.

A reiteration of the criteria for freeware:

Software classified as freeware must be fully functional for an unlimited time with no cost, monetary or otherwise.

Definition of shareware + matching software description == shareware.
Definition of freeware + contradictory software description == not freeware.

Not so confusing for most people. My original statement stands.

            Shareware. Not a true Freebie.

  • Along with the other alternatives posted above, I quite like 'Ashampoo' (stupid name I know). There's some free to use releases of that which are alright.

  • does anyone know any freeware software that lets you burn dvd video files into a video dvd? nero burning ROM doesnt work in windows 7 for some reason.

  • +1

As already mentioned, the repacked Nero Lite/Micro installers are the best alternative for those wanting all of the nero authoring features without the bloat (although not freeware)

For the free side of things CDBurnerXP is good but doesn't work with all drives (I recently installed on a friends laptop and it didn't recognize the drive, cant recall the model at the moment)

As I'm mostly burning ISO's these days Imgburn gets the most use on my machine, but I recall reading the latest v2.5 adds more advanced features allowing you to modify the layout when you burn files from hdd. Still probably not as easy as one of the above programs.

I haven't tried them but some other free burning apps are BurnAware Free and the popular InfraRecorder (which according to a vid on their site smokes up when burning on vista aero, hehe)

  • +5

its kinda funny when i see nero, it reminds me of a man, who went from a lean mean burning machine, degenerate to a fat blob of lard which is desperately throwing out 'freebies' to get people attracted to him.

man… cant anyone copy CDs with just your windows/mac OS w/o even installing any shit? the features are there already!

downloading nero to burn cds is just like buying MS office 2007 just to edit your boot.ini file.

    • I agree with your view on Nero but as Windows can't read/write CD/DVD image files natively you invariably have to install an additional program to do this basic function… Checking my PC, Windows seems to have turned into a platform for freeware/open source utilities that do the job more simply/better or fill the missing gaps for basic functionality…

  • Vista and 7 can burn DVDs. XP cannot - you need a separate program. Vista doesn't ask how many copies you need - so you have to manually repeat process each time. Quite time consuming.

  • Spyware infected with "Ask Toolbar". DO NOT DOWNLOAD.

  • No deal
