So would this play scene MKVs?

    • +1

      H.264

so I'd say so. Stick with a better reputable brand, I just bought a Popcorn Hour C-200. Little more expensive but can slot a PC Blu ray drive in to make it a blu ray player too.

      • Thanks. Might look into the popcorn hour one too.

      • The PCH, whilst a very good media tank, doesn't also have a HDTV tuner & PVR capability AFAIK?

It's also over $130 more without a HDD IIRC? ;)

  • how about this:Astone 800GB Media Gear AP-300 1080p Home Media Center for $199

I have the AP-300. It plays every format I have thrown at it including MKVs, HD RMVB etc

They also have regular updates on firmware on their website forums www.astone.com.au

To be honest, I was very impressed with the unit, including the build quality and ease of use.

I think this unit is exactly the same but with the added PVR function.

Good device but beware of 1saleaday. I bought 3 dlink wireless usb dongles all but one was broken and they were all used items.
I tried to contact them but they have no phone or support options.
I emailed them and no response.
Only way to get refund I can see is to fill out RMA form on website and post back.

If you can buy elsewhere for $10 more do, as any issues 1saleaday wont pick up the slack!

    • Matt777, We have not received your email for some reason, Please email [email protected]. At 1Saleaday we do provide immediate action towards any issues which our customers are experiencing.
The Dlink devices are brand new. There was an issue with very few customers receiving damaged box due to postage and we have taken care of all customers.

      • I will email you again now. My order number was #00004757
All 3 boxes had been opened and were i n different states of packaging.
some had items in plastic one was missin dongle cover.. only 1 had a cd. 2/3 had no plastic wrap of cable tie on usb extender base. 1 was completely falling apart and fell open with I plugged into usb port.

Items definately were not new. and had been opened before

All will be taken care of. Awaiting your email.

  • Picked up one of these puppies from COTD last week. Haven't received the email to say it's been shipped yet, so getting a little frustrated …

  • peshmo, has the Astone offer ended early? I now see a handheld checker

    • This offer ended early. I do apologize for the confusion.

  • Does anyone have any thoughts on the this Astone product (still available at spotit $310) vs the Aldi PVR ($299) that is on sale later this week in terms of functionality?

    • Aldi PVR is just a PVR only, this unit cannot play 1080p media acquired from external sources. The unit will most likely record and playback from its internal tuners.

Much more feature on the comparison device, the Astone AP-360T can record TV from its (single) HD tuner, as well as connect to a computer on a network and accept USB drives and play back most media files, including H.264, RMVB files

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/18772

  • The Aldi one has the twin tuners, which is a really good feature. Otherwise the Astone 360T is better i think. Depends on what you need and value.

  • I bought the astone 300 a couple of months ago and it's a great little unit.

The aldi PVR is simply a PVR..no more. The Astone is more than just a PVR. it will play pretty much every media format you throw at it. photos slide shows when you have families/friends around, and it even plays ripped music files.

  • Is this better than getting a Mac Mini for a media centre?

    Twin Tuners FTW!!

These days, unless you only watch the odd tv show, you will almost definately need Dual Tuners if you are looking at buying a PVR. If you watch a few hours a week, and/or have kids/partner/flatmates that will
use it, you will certainly need a dual tuner machine.

The one listed here will not play a channel whilst recording another one. This is a deal breaker for many people wanting PVR's. This item is good if you download tv shows or movies, or need to stream media from a HDD/usb drive to a tv.

    • Dual Tuners is only necessary for old TVs without built-in HD tuner. You can use TV's tuner to watch and player's tuner to record.

      • What if you want to record 2 shows at the same time? Occurs pretty often in my household.

  • Just picked one up from the www.xpmicro.com.au Auburn store for $299 with 808GB installed.

    • me too, and I got the HDMI cable for $9.90, it's on special right now!

  • Very happy with the AP-360T so far. Ordered from 1saleaday on Monday 23rd and received it on Thursday the 26th so even shipping was decently quick.
