PayPal $20 Cashback for $50 Spend Problem

I made an order for 5 books to get the $20 cashback. Came to about $51 not including shipping.

However, Better World Books immediately refunded one of the books since it was no longer available, leaving me $10 off receiving the cashback.

I emailed them to cancel the order as soon as I got the email, but it was too late- already shipped.

Anyone have any advice on any avenues I can go with this. Better World Books doesnt seem to care and a Paypal dispute I made to rectify it was immediately closed….

  • probably should have bought another book worth $10, and asked it to be added to the invoice instead. That sucks dude, looks like you've fallen between the lines.

Perhaps the others can add some advice.

    • Yeah I did that but they wouldnt consider it, as they processed the refund at the same time they emailed me saying the book is not available

  • Might get lucky. Could be like going to Woolworths to spend $30 and get a fuel voucher, then return the whole lot for a full refund, but you still get to keep the fuel voucher. But as this is a full $20 cashback rather than a 3% discount voucher I tend to think that Paypal will have configured their system to ensure people don't abuse it by seeking refunds of their purchases, so maybe not.

  • I was thinking do you think that you could email them and ask them for a gift voucher instead of the refund. I am not sure if they could reverse the refund but I guess its worth a shot.

Raise a Paypal dispute detailing that you paid and have not received your full order.
You are happy to accept the full order or cancel the order.
You are not obliged to accept a partial order.
Reject the delivery when it arrives. Do not accept it.

    • Good option, if the terms allow for it

  • Quick question regarding the rebate. I spent AUD$50 but because I bought from dealextreme and all the prices are in USD it totaled about $USD48 would I still get the rebate?

    • I think this depends if you chose to be billed in USD or AUD in the conversion options. AUD is the default so I wouldn't think there'd be any problems.

I said at the time that the terms and conditions indicate that you have to spend $50 AUD, which implies that you have to use their slightly worse exchange rate so the real value of the cashback might be $19.50 or thereabouts.

Got the cashback today. It seems the elligibility process doesn't take into account shipping fees, since this order came to about AUD $51 in total. Thanks for your advice.

    • Interesting. I have a suspicion that the glitch that caused the delay meant they went back to check their records and refunded all of the 50 AUD purchases with those retailers, which of course overlooks the shipping cost component.

  • i got the cashback too, bought dingoo from dealextreme last month. thanks!

  • after a bit of fighting i got it for 2 purchases at dealextreme (separate)
