PlayStation 3 250GB Console + PlayTV + 1 Game - $588

270

The GAME shop in Chatswood Westfield has a deal running for a 250GB PS3, PlayTV and 1 game (choice from about 10) for $588. Can't find any mention on the website but it is up on a poster in the shop itself.

Buying these parts separately = $400 (previous COTD special for 120GB) + $150 + $50 = $600 (120GB only), so I think this is a pretty good deal especially if you're more into the DVR capability than the gaming side.

Effective price (EP) of the console + PlayTV in this deal is $588 - $50 (game) = $538. Let's look at some more 250GB + PlayTV deals:

$599 - Assassin's Creed, HDMI cable @ JB-HiFi (EP $504)

$599 - NFS Undercover, Battlefield Bad Company 1 @ EB Games (EP $519)

$589 - BR remote control @ The Good Guys (EP $539)

$568 - (nothing else) @ WOW Sight and Sound (EP $568)

  • I agree. It's a useful bundle. Often you have to be lucky if the game you want is included in the bundle. PlayTV is something that most households would find useful. If you can choose the game then this is fantastic, otherwise it's still good, you can always sell/trade the game. I also like your itemised costings, they are releastic indications of the lowest price point for each item.

    • Thanks. There is a choice of about 10 games there, can't remember which ones but one of them was Top Spin which I guess is the rough value (~$50) of the other ones and that part of the deal.

  • Similar deal for $599 at JBHifi comes with Assassin's Creed + HDMI cable.

    • Updated deal with this one as well. For me who isn't really interested in any of these games, the GAME deal appeals the most, although if you were willing to trade games in then the others are worth looking at.

      Any more similar deals?

  • playtv is a give away bonus from sony for 250gb ps3

    • Yeah I've been searching for an "official" deal from Sony but have yet to hear of one. Would definitely love to be corrected though!

      • it is from their news letter : http://newsletter.au.playstation.com/playtv/

        • I can't seem to find any solid details on how to redeem your PlayTV though. I don't think it's yet safe to assume that ALL 250GB PS3 consoles now come bundled with PlayTV since GAME was also running another deal also for $588 that was for a 250GB console + 2 games. If PlayTV was free with every 250GB then why go for the 1 game deal?

          • @chylld: The bundles are at the discretion of the retailer, not through Sony.

            • @zzyss: That is the impression I got, however the newsletter and press release keep raving about it. Also, the guy in the GAME shop said that an "official" deal is going to be coming out before Christmas. Mind you the EB games guy said the opposite.

  • I heard you can get Uncharted 2 as the free game. So let's find this bundle people :D

  • You can find a fairly up-to-date price list of all PS3 bundles on the Economical Gamer site:

Depending on your needs, either an EB or JB deal is currently the "best".

    • Updated deal with this link. That page only has one PlayTV deal though (JB)… we have 3 :)

btw, i purchased the EB deal yesterday…just wanted to share my goodluck story and possibly a bit of a tip with ppls…

      So EB's deal is:
$599 for 250gb Slim, PlayTV, NFS: Undercover, Battlefield: Bad Company.

I wasn't interested in either of the games. So I asked the EB guy about trade-in value and he said those 2 games (NFSU & BBC) were only worth $25 (for both!) trade in. I couldn't believe both of them were worth so little.

Anyway, I explained the JB deal (Trade 3, get 1 free) to him…offered to purchase an additional game, then swap all 3 for a better game (as per JB's deals). I also mentioned that NFSU and BBC were NOT on JB's exclusion list (which the guy double-checked as well).

In my case, I hadn't done my homework earlier to buy a cheap $15 ps3 game from the recent Sanity clearance or anything…and picked Little Big Planet cos it was "cheapest" they had on the shelf for ~$45.

So, in short I then traded in NFSU, LBP, and BBC for Tekken 6.

Potentially, someone could just pay a minimum of $614 (if they can get $15 tradebait) and get a new release game in the bundle.

Luckily for me, I had a gift card i wanted to redeem and I had an Edge card too which I used for the trade-ins…in the complication/confusion he forgot to charge me the extra ~$45 for LBP.

So I paid $599 and got 250gb Slim, PlayTV and Tekken 6…(minus another $70 cos of the gift card I had).

You have my vote for saving $45 by overwhelming the poor shop assistant with your Machiavellian scheme.

Great you got a good deal mate, but -1 for keeping quiet. Where is the honesty these days…

  • Good guys catalogue PS3 250Gb, a BR remote control and Play t.v for 589

    • Thanks, added

  • awesome research dude

  • Hi so does this now mean I could buy one of these & hook it up to my new HD Tv & use it a pvr as well as it being a normal PS3.?

    • +1

      Yes.

  • Thanks chylld. Just to futher check if I connect it up its by the hdmi to tv but does it record in hd or just digital & whats the compression like for this unit does it hold much if hd or digital?

      http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=ps3_playtv

About 3/4 down the page, it has the breakdown of channels, recording duration and average size…!

All recordings go onto the PS3's hard-drive. PlayTV itself is very light little plastic box…doesn't look/feel like it's worth $160. ;P

    • Yes it is actually.

    • no, eb's bundle for $599 should be:

      ps3 250g plus automatic playtv
      assassins creed 2
      nfs
      battlefield

ask if you can immediately deduct the trade in value of ac2 for $70, so the whole lot should only be $529 playtv included…

    • It's already up there in the original deal. It is better if you want the games, but if you don't want the games and aren't interested in trading in then the GAME or WOW deal is better. (but not by much)

Up to each person to mix and match really!
