Really 400amp peak current with 200 amp starting current from a little lipo or whatever is in it. Start the car 20 times! I know the chinese "pad" their specifications but really! The photos of the product don't even show the connector port that give the alleged 400amp peak current. The little pins in the pic don't look they are designed to transfer 400amps! I mean 3S lipo 15000mA battery at 25C is not that improbable, but would those little leads transfer the charge. Plus what car only requires 200 amps starting current… Hey I might be wrong but sounds a little fishy to me.

    • +5

It's all in the flux capacitor.

    • ikr. but if you scroll down the last photo you can see there is a connector under a flap. 400A for 1us lol. It might give your car battery just enough of a surface charge to get it to fire up, but no way in hell are you gonna be cranking an engine just on this thing.

Maybe they're counting on the buyer not surviving long enough after the product explodes to be able to make a bad review

This isn't intended to start the car, it assists your car with starting. And yes you are wrong.

at 200a constant it should start most cars, at 400 peak it should start just about any normal car.

pretty sure i remember coming up against you before… and you being completely wrong..

        And yes you are wrong.

so nothing new that while you are wrong… your trying to mindlessly claim someone else to be wrong…

Ok so why can't these products work?

The Porta-Jump has been around for over ten years and they have sold millions of these small lead acid batteries that can jump start batteries and I guess these are also bogus?

In defence of Maverick-au (not that he needs defending, he proved his points well with the videos he posted) I'll post a video from Julian Ilett. He's a very popular online electronics blogger who does an in-depth review of a similar unit, even taking it apart and using it to start his car with and without a car battery attached:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEza3w7tOMk

Some more points of my own to add:

The little pins in the pic don't look they are designed to transfer 400amps!

The unit uses an EC5 connector which is rated at 120 amps continuous, but it can handle much higher currents for short periods of time. They get hot if overloaded for too long, but a starter motor even at 400A will only draw that current for a few seconds.

would those little leads transfer the charge

Yes they would, quite easily. They only have to handle high currents for a few seconds at most. The leads are also very short, so they have minimal resistance. Most car jumper cables look thick but actually have thin wire inside them, with very thick insulation. They will start a car easily but are not designed to be left connected.

what car only requires 200 amps starting current

This is a jump-starter, not a battery replacement! It assists the existing battery if it has a low charge. If your car battery is completely dead, this may not help get you going. If your car battery is low it will give it a boost. If your car battery is dead because your alternator isn't charging the car properly, this might start your car but you'll have dim headlights and your car may grind to a halt a few hundred metres down the street when you try to drive it. If you jump-start a car without a battery, it can damage the car's electronics as some alternators can't regulate their output voltage properly. Exactly the same scenarios will happen to you with a 'standard' jump-start from another car using jumper leads, or from a heavy lead-acid booster pack.

As for 15000mAh/200A/400A values, these are probably like Chinese lumens, we all expect them to be a bit less than quoted. But if used the way it's intended, it should work well for 4 cylinder and most 6 cylinder petrol cars. I wasn't going to + the deal, but it is at least $12 cheaper than anything else I can find for the same unit, so it deserves a +.

I've actually been looking for something similar myself as I couldn't start my car last week and ended up drenched having to lug the heavy lead-acid jump-starter over to the car in the pouring rain. Happened to me again today. I won't buy this one though, as I need something heftier to occasionally start a 600CCA V8, and this just won't cut it even if the numbers are reliable. I know from experience that small lead-acid jump-starter units start the family's 4 cylinder cars but won't start a V8 or diesel.

      • +1

        Just buy two then.

        • I like your thinking stumo! A 400-600A rated one is in the $90-100 ballpark anyway, so hooking two of these up in parallel would give me even more capacity! I was thinking about that earlier, but still haven't made my mind up. Having two would be useful. Hmmm… decisions decisions…

  • Why is that in the description it specifies 5v/1A but in the photo the unit displays 5v/2A?

I'm interested in the item but am not sold on it yet.

  • -6

There is no way this thing is legit.

200A to 400A from that thing? It's either fake or it'll explode in your hand, taking your car with you as well.

Don't sell shit that will get people killed trying to jump start their car.

    • +1

Quadcopters easily peak at 100a on a single lipo battery. 2 or 3 in parallel should do the job. Not saying fake or not, but it's possible.

sorry, that vid is bullshit and staged… cars will run off the alternator just fine once started. it would NOT die by simply unplugging the battery pack.

Not all cars will run on an alternator just fine and there are plenty of scenarios where the car will stop with the battery removed after starting including faulty alternator, wiring issues, corrosion on connections and so forth. It's very dangerous to disconnect a lead acid battery when the car is running and thousands of dollars in damage can be caused by voltage issues like spikes in voltage and the alternator can be also be damaged.

also there is no way that those cables let alone connectors will handle 200a constant let alone 400a peak. i also call bullshit on reps claims

There are hundreds of these devices sold on Amazon alone with tens of thousands of customers giving feedback that they work. There are hundred if not thousands of videos on youtube showing them work but you have the knowledge from your armchair to say they don't work! Is this based on connecting a 9v battery once or do you actually have any experience in the electrical/electronics industry?

        • +1

Feel free to be outraged for yet another false chinese tech spec on OzB, but to claim it won't start a car is just sticking your head in the sand.

Over 87% of people have given this 4 or 5 stars but you choose to ignore that and instead use a review from one person that had one battery cell fail after 9 months of use and who was using it incorrectly (with over 9 feet of extension leads).

You can't admit that you were wrong can you?

Here is an Anker product on Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T2GT9L4?ref_=gbsl_tit_l-…
Again most of the negative reviews are from people incapable of tying their shoelaces.

        • @Maverick-au: Whoa Maverick, steady on matey. We're just discussing the product. Don't take it so personally. So you think these $50 versions can "easily start the car for more than 30 times continuously"? If so they really are incredible and I might give one a go. What about high temperatures? If one of these was left permanently connected in a car for convenience how would they go after sitting in a hot car all day? Look forward to your input.

Interesting fact: I've wired up 36 AA enloops to try and start my car with no success. But it did trickle charge my battery enough to start it after a while. Or maybe it was luck.

Probably just puts some charge into your car it does say on one of the pictures 12v 2A. I I doubt it could jump start.

Here's a guy boosting his car batteries with AA batteries, which adds a small charge over 10 minutes as you suggest.

However I personally bought one of these and it arrived yesterday, and it EASILY starts a 4.5 litre V8 even with no battery attached:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141631945797

The Newfrog jump-starter listed in this deal should easily start anything with a four cylinder engine, and smaller V6 engines.

  • fyi if you ignore the car starting feature
you can actually also use these as power banks for laptops or Surface pro grade tablets because of the high amperage if you buy the appropriate tip connector

Normally power banks can only charge a smartphone or tablet

but this can charge a laptop as well

  • I looked into this sort of product weeks ago and hesitated from buying because I am unsure how long can this thing hold the charge- this is in fact the 2nd most important point to consider after thinking if it can actually start a car with a dead battery!

For a usual huge jumpstarter. It could last for more than half year in one single charge. For this, I am really not sure.

Call me a paranoid but I always have a jumpstarter in the car's boot although I am paying for the NRMA roadside assistance every year.

It will hold it's charge for a year or more depending on the model but it can be recharged in the car so just top it up once a month or plug it in everytime you fill the car as it can sit in your glove box and unplug it when you get home.

Ignore the negative posters on here, none of them have any electric/electronics experience and they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Not sure I would buy this brand but I would look at Amazon at the various models available.

Just to clear up some misinformation about these products.

    1. I'm not speaking about this device in particular (but for this price I'm very tempted to take a punt)
    2. My mechanic swears by these jump starters. So much so that he doesn't even use the big starter on a trolley they have in the work shop
    3. I have seen this thing start some very difficult to start E85 cars with a flat battery, E85 and cold starts mean a lot of cranking
    4. Whether it could start 20 times over and over (well i'm not that confident)
    5. But for the occasional jump starting for car that have sat for a few weeks (I have 7 cars!) they are more than capable of give the battery enough oomph to get going.
    6. I was just a skeptical at first until I saw my flat battery car (waiting for parts) at the workshop fire right up on E85 fuel
    7. The leads that come out of the unit and to the alligator clips may look thing but are a fairly thick core inside
    • Would you consider buying one? or at least recommended it to someone?

      • Yep took a punt and bought it. Have been looking on and off for one anyway. My current repco jump starter is big and heavy. This will be much easier

  • +2

Dont know about starting a car 30 times in row, but i have jump started my commodore on two different occasions with one similar to this. They do work.

  • Is this good enough to keep dashcam running 24/7?

    • +2

Is this good enough to keep dashcam running 24/7?

You would be better off with one of the battery packs that allow charging and power to their USB ports at the same time like the Romoss and Xaomi packs do. This way the battery pack is charged when driving and if you do short trips you would want to have a 2A charger and also consider the power consumption of the dash cam and this is where the mobius ones are good as you can set them to record on movement only.
