a6000 got dpreview's best overall/best value camera in their 2015 interchangeable lens cameras between $500-800:

    http://www.dpreview.com/articles/6851428109/2015-roundups-in…

    • Yes indeed. Also many good positive feedback for users as well.

      • +4

got one myself and am pretty happy with it. rocking the 35mm 1.8 sony and a 19mm 2.8 sigma

      • Yes. Its got everything you need even for today's standards and it's almost 2 years old. I enjoyed shooting with it but now moved to Fuji.

        • How are you finding fuji compared to sony?

        • @jinxsphinx: Just got it last week so didn't get much time to play with it. The only downside is the old sony 16mp sensor. Apart from that it looks and feels much better than the Sony.

        • @Dealayed: Which Fuiji did you get? Also in the market for something like this but the category is starting to get a little congested.

        • @denwol: Xt10 with 18-135 and 27mm. $1700 less $500 cash back from Fuji.

      • +2

Yeah I have the A6000 and love it. Best camera I have ever had. Just point and shoot and magically get good photos.

      • +1

        Have a6000. Love a6000. Recommend a6000.

35mm f1.8 lens is all you really need apart from the kit lens.

  • +1

Was thinking of posting the a6000 deal.. Good price at $694 with $150 eftpos card and $50 cashback if you have Amex. Oh and another $25 signup discount.

    • Not available on their website yet, but should be so tomorrow (Weekend deal)

    • Tried to use the $25 signup for this yesterday. When you add the kit to your cart shows as two full price items with an in-cart '-$547' discount. When you add the $25 discount you lose the kit price. I tried going through Live Chat about he but ended up saying I couldn't have both discounts.
Also had to explain this when trying to price match the kit this morning (which guy said they can only price match once the sale starts)

    • -1

sorry, can you explain the $50 amex cashback?

  • -1

Freaken tempted…. Must resist…… A7000 is just around the corner….

    • +1

I was thinking the same but newer models are not always better(quality wise but may have more other features which you may not always need eg. more megapixels…)
and most important the price would be more for the "a7000" I think. Just depend when you need it…

    • +1

A7000 has been rumored since last Xmas when HN had discounted this camera and sony were giving away a free zoom lens too. Last i read was it not passing the tests due to overheating issues. If you want one now get the a6000 as the a7000 will be launched for $1k at least.

      • Good camera. Wait for A7000 if you can, because if anything, it will probably drive costs of the A6000 down.

    • +2

A7000 is going to be at least double the price of this.

  • Canon EOS 1200D 18-55mm Lens Kit $323 after $75 cashback from Canon
is it now $150 cashback? ( double cashback offer )

    • please read the deal condition:
Double Cashback (Purchase of an Eligible Product and $200 of other Canon product/s, in the same transaction with a single receipt)

    • I think you'll have to buy $200 of extra Canon products to qualify for double cashback: "Double Cashback (Purchase of an Eligible Product and $200 of other Canon product/s, in the same transaction with a single receipt)"

    • oops my bad

  • Great.
How is a6000 against NEX range?

    • +4

It's an evolution of the NEX range.
Basically, Sony dropped the NEX naming convention to keep it in line with their 'alpha' or 'a' series.

      • Thank you.that was quick.

        • +3

i went from the nex-5 to the a6000. love the camera

        • @Tm15: I would have done this as well (5-N) but damn, that Nikon D3300 deal was too good to pass!

        • @anthonettex:same boat.
Will get killed if l buy another one.

        • +1

          @Tm15:
I've got an nex-5N. What are the major changes you've noticed from the nex-5 to the a6000?

        • @sachy:

Then kill first and enjoy both cameras mwahaha

        • +1

          @hur91:

Its slightly bigger so take that into consideration.. But overall connectivity with wifi, video quality, auto focus even battery life all alot better

  • How does Canon 1200D compare to Nikon D3300? HN has the D3300 for $100 more…

    • +1

Might try to compare 750D with D3300 rather than 1200D.

      • Meaning?

        • +1

          D3300>1200D

        • @Bappy:
Awesome. The D3300 at $298 was a good choice then.

      • You are kidding right, 750d is upper range of entry-level

        • +1

Look at the spec of 750D and D3300 both has 5fps, 24 megapixels, ISO and other similarity while 1200D only has 3fps 18 megapixels it's more like a bridge-camera with changeable lens "feature", how to compare ?

        • D3300 has better sensor and cpu. 750d has articulating touch screen.

  • damn I just bought an a6000 last weekend for nearly the same price without the lens :(

    • +1

Return it…. then grab this one.

    • JB HiFi? I did that too, but I spoke to the manager of my store today and he said I could return it with a full refund because it was less than 7 days since purchase. I'm gonna buy it from HN today.

      • Actually last friday, so I only have until today haha

Maybe I can show them the receipt and ask for a free kit lens lol

        • Manager special treatment… Otherwise just return it.

        • My cash back claim has been validated for the camera already, so I pretty sure that it will come even if I refund the JBHiFi one and buy the HN one and claim another cash back.
So TL;DR I could possible get $300 worth of Visa Cards

        • @epicttiimm:
Read a comment before in the Nikon D3300 deal about it being in the Ts and Cs about returning the item, and then your liable for the return of the $100 cash back?

        • +2

          Bah. Too much hassle.

I'll sleep it in and forgot that this deal ever existed.

          OzB level - 1;

  • That free 8gb micro SD might be worth the trouble

  • Is it just me or are there no stores in VIC with the a6000 in stock? I've checked the website and there is nothing there.

  • I have a Sony SLT-A55 with some A-mount lenses, plus an RX100. Is it worth 'upgrading' the A55 with the a6000? Is the a6000 picture quality a big step up from the A55?

    • The A6000 won't be able to use your existing A-mount lenses. A6000 uses E-mount lenses…

      • Yes, that's clear. Just wondering whether the a6000 is good enought that it justifies going across to the E-mount world (and sell the A55 and A-mount lenses).

        • If you're really looking for a jump in quality, I'd be looking more at the A7 series of cameras. I'm sure the A6000 is better than A55, but it's probably not going to that noticeable unless you're constantly shooting in dim light etc, when again the A7 series will shine.

The other advantage of the A6000 is the small form factor of course.

However, Sony also seems to have the most commitment currently to their FE range, with A-mount and E-mount users complaining they're not getting the love.

        • +2

          @mooboy:

Those complaints have been going on for 4 or so years…. I had 2 Nex 7's at one stage, and lack of lenses has always been Sony's problem. The 7 was supposed to be the game changed and they left it in a ditch when they abandoned the E mount for the FE mount.

The only way I would convince anyone to commit to these entry-ish level ILC's if they're NOT going to get too caught up in building an arsenal of lenses. If they're happy making do with Auto and half decent kit lenses, they'll suit the masses wanting something smaller than a DSLR. Anything beyond this, I'd strongly suggest some research into each system before committing. Olympus/Panasonic for example is a VERY small jump/downgrade (if you call it that) as far as sensor size goes. Anything else, they're miles ahead unless you jump to FF.

Anyway, Sony, great innovators but man they're frustrating. I'm over at Fuji and Olympus these days! Thumbs up

    • I had an A65 (the model up from A55) , and now have A6000 and A7. A6000 is much better in low light, but the A7 is better still. A6000 focus speed is better in my opinion than the A65. In good daylight both would be close to equal in photo quality, except the a6000 is 24 megapixels.

If you have good A-mount glass, you can get the sony lens adapters to keep using them.

  • Can someone clarify the $150 bonus from Sony because the promo page says:

    Eligible Models

    Camera Body ILCE6000B $150

    It doesn't say kit?

    • +3

they come with two separate boxes and the invoice will state ILCE6000B and the lens.

  • +1

I sold mine on eBay for $850 a few months ago, this is a good price for what it is.

  • I have NEX-5R and love it (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/119072) and also has purchased one additional Lens SEL35F18 because of this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/128278. Thinking to upgrade to this camera, but not sure if I should go with it. One of the reason I'd like to upgrade is because of the difficulty I get to capture photo on very bright day since 5R doesn't have viewfinder. Any advice?

    • since not urgent. maybe worth waiting for the "A7000".
but just noticed the NEX-5R does not have:
      -built-in flash
      -viewfinder
-dial-mode (which I did missed, easier with dial-mode)

  • +3

Seriously jump on that a6000 deal, took mine on holiday and impressed all friends with photos

    • Took mine to a wedding and wowed a bunch of people with how small it was. Pics came out great too, but for very low light, iso 6400+ and lots of LR required.

I prefer to shoot in raw and edit later. It's part of the strength of the a6000 Imo.

  • How is the battery life of the A6000?

I'm currently using a Canon 60D with a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 (and two other lenses for my ultra-wide angle and telephoto needs), which is a bit bulky but can reliably get me through a day of heavy use with one full charge. I also have a spare battery, just in case.

    • +5

Battery life is ok in the a6000, but the redeeming feature is that it can be charged via usb. Which means that you can charge it in your bag with a power bank!

      • Oh, wow. I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing!
I'll definitely keep a closer eye on this line of cameras. :)

        • +1

I managed about 400 - 450 shots per charge, what really kills it is going AF-C or wifi/nfc always on.

  • +1

anyone reckon JB hifi would price match the Sony deal, given it's actually two SKU's?

i want to use jb gift cards is all

  • How come it comes up as no available stock but if I order online there is stock for pick up? How does this work as I wouldn't mind a little play before I buy but no stores in my area (200km radius) seem to have any stock.

  • +1

Considering between this and Olympus OMD E-M10… Any suggestion? :)

    • -1

      APS-C > M4/3

      • +3

In terms of sensors, yes. In terms of ecosystem, m43 is better. That said, I've never been very impressed with m43.

        • Let's shoot in low light and compare the noise then :)

      • +2

Difference between APSC and m43 is negligible, especially when talking about image quality.
Resolution though, seems to be m43’s weak point, but not a hugh issue as anything over 12mp is mostly enough for average consumers.

    • +3

See my reply above. If it's even a tiny glimmer of a thought in your mind that you may want some specific lenses in the future, steer clear of the e-mount stuff and stick with Olympus/Panasonic, you won't look back! The difference in "bokeh" people so commonly like to bring up against m43 is a moot(sp?) point once you start chucking on some good glass - and that's the kicker, at least there's glass to choose from!

I had Nex7 (x2), 18-200 (meh), 16mm (meh - I actually thought it was better than people would make you seem to believe!), 50mm (meh-ish, just didn't sit with me) and lastly the Zeiss 24 - amazing lens, bit on the large side but that was IT. Forgive my ignorance, but what have they added since? 35mm Fxx?

As they have been known to do in the past, they abandoned one system in the hope of fixing another. They're on the right track now with the FE stuff but unless you're willing to commit to that and seeing as you've already considered olympus, I'd definitely stick with that decision.

      Just my 2c!

      • What lenses are you talking about?

      • 35/1.8

the 50/1.8 is prob my fav, cheap but amazing.

      • +1

Lol. Love the neg for 'my 2c.' Gone are the days of tried and tested advice trying to save someone else the disappointment.

Anyway, 35mm came wayyyyyy too late. I had my Nex's for 2+ years and was left wanting the whole time. The 24mm was beautiful but for the price vs. size, etc. etc., outweighed by other options, definitely no reason to hang on to a system based on ONE lens.

@nadan What lenses? What Olympus lenses? Sony? What are you referring to? If referring to Olympus (& Panasonic), where to start…? The list is endless.

@optusprime As I said, 50mm stayed in my bag, never really got along with it. That's just me. The 35mm was only around in the dying days of me owning the system so definitely wasn't going to commit when I was already looking to go elsewhere. Especially not when early reports said it was lack-lustre at best anyway and nowhere near the likes of the Zeiss Touit.

Apologies if I upset anyone that still owns an NEX/A1234567xxxxxxxx, not denying they have a half decent system, but it's definitely not Son'y main focus, so it's a dead end (in my eyes) and has been in the past with other ventures of theirs.

Neg away. (I still don't even get the pos/neg around here anyway so meh)

        • +1

I was asking about lack of lenses with the Sony.
Sony E and FE mount is very well alive and doing very well actually, specially since the a7II were announced. I am not sure where you are getting the idea that they are dead end? You are probably referring to the A mount as there hasn't been much activity on that front.

Most people who buy into these systems aren't interested in shelling out thousands of dollars for specialized lenses, because the kit lens or the cheaper lenses give them good enough photos. As Optusprime and a few others have pointed out they are quite happy with the affordable prime lenses they have.

I think your tested advice is not tested at all, since you have said the prime lenses came out after you had left the system. So you might want to adjust your not tested advice.

        • -1

You posted therefore you get negged. Simples.

        • +2

Yeah I will also vouch for M43. I recently got a Panasonic GX7 and three prime lenses (14, 20 & 42.5) to complement my DSLRs. Loving the features and size of M43, and quality is overall still pretty impressive.

The a6000 sounds pretty awesome too though. I would get it if I didn't have enough cameras already lol.

        • @nadan:

I will entertain this comment - wasn't going to.

If you read my comments correctly you'd note I was referring to the E mount being abandoned, not the FE, but thank you for also pointing out that they abandoned the A mount also. Further reiterating my point.

If you're trying to claim FE lenses as being part of the E mount system, that's like saying I can strap a piece of Leica glass to my Fuji/Olympus/Sony/whatever. While you're at it, count all the A-mount lenses towards the system with that amazing eyesore of an adapter…

Like I said, the 35mm was out but I was unimpressed (yes I tested one). More so unimpressed than the 50mm, that was a sharp lens at least. The 35 was a half assed attempt at FINALLY filling the 50mm (equiv.) hole in their system. Then what did Sony do? Ah stuff it, we'll invent a whole new range, bye bye E-mount. Time and time again (they did it with the A-mount) they leave their customers high and dry. Don't know about you but I'm not going to keep investing in that.

The FE stuff has got me peaking back over the fence, but I wouldn't even consider going back to Sony until everyone else has a cracking at the FF mirrorless game. They've got a lot of work to do before they get my money again.

I'll also quote myself in a round about way from a previous post you obviously haven't seen - Entry-ISH level E-mount = great option if you're happy with the kit lenses and you'll be stuck in auto for the majority of the time. Also great due to sensor size/light gathering/blah blah blah. Gee, I'm such a Sony basher…..

Blind justification. We all do it, I'm not hating on you, so do me a favour and take a step back, go out and shoot some snaps with your NEX/A-whatever it is.

Edit P.s: Your argument for want of a word is also broken. You mention A7 ii (how many models did it take to get half-right again?) and how much the system is flourishing (finally - never denied this), yet you go on to say people (very broad generalisation) are happy with their [cheaper] prime lens choices. A7 plus cheap lenses aren't really in the same conversation surely?

        • @bym:
Lol, makes perfect sense… Have a neg!

    • One advantage of the micro-4/3 (including Olympus OMD-EM10) compared to almost any other modern digital system is that there are two large competing manufacturers making cameras and lenses for the same system.

So there is often a choice between two different manufacturers for lenses of particular focal lengths ('zoom'), with varying prices, quality and features.
Similarly, there is often a choice, at a particular price point, of different cameras in terms of size (very small Panasonic GM series vs 'full-size' GH series), functionality and even styling ('retro' OMD series vs rather more conventional Panasonic G7/GH4).

But that is only an advantage if the buyer is eventually likely to carry a variety of lenses (the lenses on the micro-4/3 are also lighter than most APS lenses, making it realistically practical for a photographer to carry several lenses and camera bodies and STILL have room in the bag for refreshments) and even different camera bodies for different purposes ("I am the photographer with heavy equipment and a sore back" look vs. "I am a shooting from the hip with a camera half-hidden under my jersey while riding my bicycle.") while sharing the same lens system.

      • Except the lenses aren't fully compatible between the manufacturers, despite belonging to the same m43 platform. If you put a Panasonic lens on a camera body, you won't get in camera corrections and vice versa. Also Olympus lenses have no stabilization, so if you have a Panasonic body besides the GX8, those lenses aren't a real alternative due to lack of IS.

        • The practical reality is that Olympus-body owners use Panasonic lenses, and Panasonic-body owners use Olympus lenses (that also happens to be the practical situation within my own family, I freely swap lenses between bodies), without any major concern. Most of the important correction is shared between the two manufacturers. Some lenses have slower focussing speed or more chromatic aberration, when used with the other manufacturer, but some degree of chromatic aberration is a fact of life for some lenses on all kinds of camera-bodies which did not do in-body correction.

In practice, I often found Panasonic-bodies focussed faster with my Olympus lenses than my Olympus-bodies do, so in that circumstance the Panasonic-body is more 'compatible' with the Olympus lens than Olympus's own bodies!

The Olympus-bodies tend to have image stabilization 'in-body', only a minority of Panasonic-bodies have 'in-body' stabilization, and a few Panasonic lenses have stabilization in-lens. There are plenty of people using camera-systems which don't have in-body stabilization available in any camera body, and many of those people are also using lenses without stabilization.

So I have no qualms using a non-stabilized lens on a non-stabilized body. In such a circumstance, I need to be careful about my shutter speed relative to focal length in that circumstance. That happens to be the same situation for the vast majority of prime-lens shooters in the Canon/Nikon DSLR world as well! So it can hardly be called an unrealistic option to be shooting without stabilization.

        • @DavidFong: None of that changes the fact that m43 is not a truly open platform, and that both Panasonic and Olympus make lenses best suited for their own branded bodies because they are not fully compatible with one another. Not having automatic lens corrections is a larger issue with m43 as some of the lenses are intentionally designed poorly to compromise and rely on the body software correction to bring those images back to normal to what was intended. Lacking that automatic correction is like missing half the lens. Also Image stabilization is a given standard today, some systems even have dual body AND lens IS combined, and even phones have optical image stabilization. It's great that you want to get less than what you pay for, but it shouldn't have to be a compromise at all and is just another limitation of the platform when not everything is designed to be made for one another.

        • @Orpheus:

Stabilization is a given standard? When almost no Canon or Nikon SLR bodies have in-body stabilization? To my understanding, just about none of the prime lenses for Canon/Nikon have stabilization either?

Okay, I'm just too old. I remember the days when I had pay attention to the shutter speed, time my breaths and hold my camera still accordingly! Those were the days when photographers didn't always rely on the 'Auto' setting of their camera, I guess. But, in fact, with stabilization, I still have to pay attention to my shutter speed.

The geometric lens correction exists for both Olympus/Panasonic lenses on Olympus and Panasonic bodies. It is mainly chromatic aberration that is sometimes found wanting, and that is only with some lenses (and, in my limited experience, if chromatic aberration was a problem with that lens using the body from one manufacturer, it is also a problem on the body from the 'native' manufacturer as well).

The 'fact' might not change, but the practical reality is that the lenses can be used interchangeably, without concerns about compatibility issues, and produce predictable good results without the majority of users (or anyone else) noticing the slightest difference.

So it is not like missing 'half' the lens at all. Well, not in the hands of any photographer in my family. Not a limitation, but a plus.

        • @Orpheus:

Image stabilization is a given standard today

Yes, but generally not in the body, when it comes to mirrorless and dslr.
Don't forget both the A6000 and 1200D don't have in body stabilization, so I don't know how you can think this is a m43 issue.
If you use a sigma lens on a Canon or a Sony, the result would be exactly the same, unless the Sigma has in lens stabilization but most don't, if not all.
Also high-end phones nowadays have OIS, that's certainly true, but is the lens interchangeable?

Truth is using another manufacturer’s lens is mostly ‘very usable’, including using an adapter etc, but using what is completely compatible is always going to make the experience better, no matter what system you use.

      • The MFT lenses are also ridiculously expensive when you consider the equivalent aperture and focal length of most lenses.

        • Agreed, they are often more expensive than some other camera-systems, and that is only partly compensated when the two major m43 manufacturers (Olympus and Panasonic) have directly competing lenses. Sigma/Tamron have only produced a few lenses for the m43 system so far, which is a shame, since some of the lenses they have produced for the m43 have been somewhat more competitively priced.

However, I do consider that their is a price to pay for convenience of having lenses which perform the same functional job as a lens in another system, but are considerably more portable.

In what other system can I carry a 120mm (FOV equivalent) f2.8 macro-lens, together with my laptop, stethoscope, protective personal equipment (from body-fluid spills), work-paper and other-assorted equipment, together with my lunch, in a normal work-satchel? And still have room to store a 18mm (FOV equivalent) f4.0 lens? And then push the ISO up to 3200, to take photographs of flying bees on when I am walking to visit a patient at their home? And, when I am out cycling, hide the entire camera under my cycling jersey with a 18mm (FOV equivalent) f8.0 lens?

        • @DavidFong:

Yeah certainly true. I was pretty close to getting an omd em10 myself. I tend to carry my a6000 + kit lens + 35mm prime everywhere I go these days. It's so tiny and light!

  • Sound quality on this is quite average.. looked up some reviews, so not great for recording video

  • +1

    And no mic in.
    Only way is via hotshoe

  • I own Canons and i'm a Canon fanboy. But seriously. Get the Sony Alpha A6000. Just saying.

  • so the a6000 is $694 after $150 "cashback" from sony? it was definitely cheaper before: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/207626. not a neg, just wanted to clarify.

    • +1

it is definitely $694 before getting the $150 VISA card.
I spoke to my local store to confirm pricing but they have told me they have no stock and will not be getting any in the near future…..
