I wonder if it's the normal price now?

    • +4

      yes it is, it's not a bargain…

  • Wasn't this posted about a week ago?

Officeworks = next-day delivery if your total is $55++.

Unless you live any where outside of a capital city. Then there isn't any free shipping and you pay through the roof for shipping. That's why i've never ordered any thing through delivery from Officeworks, the shipping cost here to Rockhampton QLD is atrocious.

      • Too true; I do also feel sorry for those in the outposts of Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin and Hobart.

      • Is the Rockhampton store too far away?

        • -1

Soon to be a subdivision of Brisbane. No bull you can just Steer there if you are balls enough with bolt cutters

        • No the store is not too far away just a couple of suburbs away. But i find it ironic that there's a store here yet the delivery fee that the online store wants to here at my front door is awful. Could take the bus to the local store and back home and still save heaps over the online delivery fee. Heck could even take a taxi there and back and still save money.

        • @hollykryten: delivery is free to the store.

        • @Flying Ace:

True that's click and collect. Although i'm talking about home delivery.

  • So if I pay $49 for this device, I can start taking credit card payments from people and the only cost I incur is PayPal's transaction fee (2.9% or whatever it is)? No ongoing fee or sign up costs, etc?

    • It's even discounted for the Here reader. 1.9% I'm pretty sure. The only catch is, you have to be approved to use it but I'm pretty sure that's a simple process.

Geez that's not bad. I think the big bank EFTPOS rates are lower, but that involves a lot of messing around with business bank accounts.

This is a good alternative for someone only taking a few payments a year - maybe doing a side business as a freelancer or some Gumtree retailing.

        • +1

This will cover AMEX for that fee too AFAIK.

For reference, my merchant fees with a mainstream provider are around 0.80% for standard credit cards, 0.35c for EFTPOS over $15, 15c for EFTPOS under $15 and 1.9% for premium credit cards (MasterCard platinum, etc).
          AMEX is above 2%.

        • @stickyfingers: Are those special rates you've negotiated? I recall a few years ago checking out the EFTPOS fees at NAB and they were at least 30c + 2% for standard card transactions. Maybe things have finally changed for the better!

        • +1

@railspider: MasterCard and Visa have lowered their rates quite a bit in the past 5 years or so.

        • +1

I don't think I'd use this for Gumtree listings - too much chance of customer charge-backs, etc.
I think cash is the best (and expected) option.

        • @railspider: Nope, that's through Tyro. Forgot to mention the $29 monthly rental fee too…

      • You have to be approved? Damn, looks like Wikileaks won't be allowed to use it :-P

    • it's 1.95% if you use the card reader

    • You'd have to ask them, but looks like 1.95% if the customer swipes their card, but 2.9% + 30c if you manualy enter it. Which is cheaper then online paypal which is 2.6%+30c

  • Which one is this? White or Black version. I don't understand the names just tell me which colour son

    • Not exactly sure if I understand your question. The product is black. The white phone pictured on the landing pages is just an indication that it works with your phone to send the data. You get the black box with the keypad and screen.

      I hope that helps.

      • Thanks. I had the white earlier version this must be the update before the update

        • Paint it whatever colour you like

  • excellent, thanks

So on the fence between this and square up reader https://squareup.com/au/reader I believe sq offer 1.9% for both card present and manual entry which is a BIG plus for me. BUT paypal version has a nice screen and keypad, where as sq uses your mobile phone screen which seems less secure / professional. Sq has better customer service and payment time frames I hear. Maybe get both? sq for phone bookings and pp for in front of the client. Also then I have a spare. What are your thoughts?

Hehehe iPhone 7 users need not apply

I had the previous version of the PayPal here reader, the battery is only useful for a couple of days between charges and if it goes flat you get charged more for manually entered card details.
I have been using the square reader for a few months and now no longer bother with PayPal (I used PayPal here for over a year). I thought using the phone screen rather than a device for PIN entry would deter customers but I have never had anyone think twice about entering their PIN on the phone. Also when manually entering card details, the square register app has a signature screen for them to sign.
I have had warranty issues with both, square was easier to deal with - just fill in a web form and a new one arrived 5 days later. PayPal took an hour on the phone and then wouldn't send it to a PO box. I had to drive 30 minutes to a major post office to collect.

As my transactions are nearly all over $100, I don't bother with tap and go readers so $19 for square beats $49 for PayPal. If you sign up to square through a referral, you are eligible for up to $1000 of transactions without fees, so you get your $19 back

Edit: Also after 10 years in business, I needed more documentation to open a PayPal business account than I have ever needed for anything before. I would have thought an ABN and a business bank account would have been OK but it was nowhere near enough.

Would you like to provide your referral link to Square?

      • Thanks SteveM, we just chamged over to a new business structure and the detail they needed for a regular paypal account was unbelievable! Wanted copies of the partnership agreement and all! Hate to think what they want for this then. You have convinced me, square it will be. How about the referal link!?

      • I'm looking at one too, if you send me a referral, I'll make sure I use it!

  • wow…this is a product NOW…how long has paypal been around for???
so i guess we have to wait another 30 years before bitcoin and monero payments to be accepted by merhcants or maybe we can use https://wirexapp.com/
title lacking needs some info about what the item is.

    • Since 2014. http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2014/06/paypal-here-lets-your-p…

It has nothing to do with cryto-currency or bitcoin, Paypal HERE is Paypal's service that lets you accept card payments easily using a handheld terminal paired with a mobile phone.

      • ah my bad. i should get out more, iv never seen these out there anywhere.
i know it has nothing do to with crypto, but i see crypto as another payment method and if nobody accepts paypal like this what chance does crypto have.

        • The (your) customer does not need to have Paypal, they just need to have a Visa / Amex / Mastercard.

The person who uses PP Here obviously needs to be a verified Paypal user.

    • lol

"title lacking needs some info about what the item is"

google is your friend, my friend. :)

      • i did, thats why i wasnt banned :) yet

Not sure why anyone would be using paypal when Square is out now. Cheaper fees (especially when entering manually) and getting it put straight into your account rather than having to log into paypal to transfer it beats paypal any day.

I dont think customers feel as secure you swiping their card with a random device sticking out of your headphone jack. In comparison to the Paypal logo separate device.

      • I use mine with all sorts of customers from tech savvy to pensioners. Most marvel at the fact I can take payments with the phone and none have ever expressed any hesitation or insecurity. I did once have one refuse to use the PayPal Here device though.

    so what is this ?

    • it's a Paypal Here Reader..selling at $49 posted, via Paypal site.

  • I prefer a $39 reader pickup @officeworks

    • Do you have a link, office works shows $49 on my screen. Are you thinking of the old blue and white one?

  • paypal just drop the price to compete with the new tap and go device just released from square for $59

I moved to square nearly a year ago and works great.

  • I thought this was about HERE maps…

I've learnt something new today. Cheers

  • Bought older version around $39 last year (the blue and white colour)
Never use it until now, I regret

  • anyone have issues charging the device, and getting the reader to respond to charging?
