      Yes, watch out for pickpockets in HCMC and also unofficial taxis.

      I had a unofficial taxi driver hold my luggage hostage after demanding to be paid twice at 2am at night after getting a ride from the airport. make sure you get a legit taxi and not get suckered in to a plain car like me.

      Pickpockets I'd recommend zips on pockets had a failed pickpocket attempts in HCMC while cycling thankfully all my cycling shorts have zips on the inside.

    Just ride in an Uber, safest way to get around and you don't have to worry about getting ripped off. My driver drove around the same block 3-4 times in VN so I sent a query to Uber and they refunded me. I felt pretty safe in VN :-)

      I prefer to catch the bus from airport to CBD.
      Only cost approx. $1.20 Air conditioned and free WIFI onboard

    Vietnam war is long finished. So, yes it's safe. US on the other hand, not so sure

    It is a foreign place with foreigners who reside there and take our jobs… whilst…we're over there… or something.

    Also it's probably about as safe as travelling alone on Sydney/Melbourne public transport at night.

      It's condescending to say that, mate. It's like saying if you get yourself in trouble, blame yourself for being stupid.

      From my experience in VN, it's reasonably safe, people are generally nice. The only thing that wasn't so nice was that the night before I was leaving, I got my phone snatched from me by someone on a motorbike. I was walking on a street with my phone holding up to my ears. The street was quite busy at that time with a lot of traffic, but kind of dark. People did come up trying to help afterwards, one even volunteered to take me to the police station, which was so nice of him.

      I don't think I didn't have my street smarts. Just that it means different things when you are in different places.

        sorry i really didn't mean to come off as being condescending.

        i've been travelling solo for the past 7 years and it's just something i've learnt, have seen soooo many people being hustled overseas in one form or another.

        i can relate to your phone being snatched, my first trip to bangkok years ago i was walking down what was apparently a dodgey backstreet and had someone try to do the same. my mate later told if they want it bad enough they'll cut your hand/arm off to get it. so now when i walk down the street i'm exceptionally weary about positioning my body in such a way this can't happen, i dont walk round like most kids glued to my phone screen.

        don't get me wrong i've been hustled myself, like in japan ended up in a bar run by nigerians who sold me on the idea of 2 hours drinks for $30au. i though bargain i'm aussie do you have enough grog? anyway 2 hours later i tried to leave and they said i couldnt go anywhere as i hadnt spent enough money. long story short ended up bum rushing security forcing my way into a fire escape down 5 storeys and legging it back to my hotel.

    I just got from HCMC last monday. I felt safe the entire time I was there. though I stayed well clear of District 1 (tourist area). I got a air BNB in district 11. absolutely loved it.

    in vietnam, get yourself a sim when you arrive at the airport 220,000 dong (~$13 for unlimited data) and then get Uber.

    just use Uber getting around. there is also Grab which apparently is slightly cheaper.

    No, April is hottest because it's at end of the dry season. Jun/July it starts to rain so there's heat relief.
