Avoid Processing Fees When Using Credit Card at Scoot

Was appalled by Scoot's credit card fees when I tried to change my parents' flights this morning. $20 per person!!!

But husband found that if you pay for a gift voucher, it does not charge you processing fee for using a credit card, and then you can use that to pay for your flight and there is no need for credit card processing fee. Yay!

We've gotten the gift voucher almost immediately after we've paid for it.

Just thought I might share.

  • Is there then a fee for using the gift voucher? Something i think Jetstar used to do?

  • The only fee would be that they use their own exchange rate, which is still better than $20 per person. we ended up paying about $1 more than googled rate.

  • Not a bad idea. Can you buy gift vouchers for the exact amount of a ticket? Otherwise can remaining amounts on vouchers be used again (i.e. are not forfeited, which I think Jetstar still do?)

    • you can buy the exact amount, but you dont know what exchange rates they are using though.
Unsure if unused amounts will be forfeited.

      • Unused amounts are forfeited.

What if the value of my Scoot Gift Voucher is more than the price of my booking? Can I receive a refund of the remaining balance?

No, there is no refund for a remaining balance. Please also note that the Gift Voucher cannot be used for another booking and that any remaining value will be forfeited.

      • Scoot no longer allows exact amounts to be specified for gift voucher purchases.

        • Thanks @perthhunter. This is especially bad news if you're using another voucher (e.g. one that you purchase through the classifieds, or use from a 'refunded' flight) as one of the voucher rules says -

"Where the voucher does not cover the entire booking cost, the remaining balance must be paid with another voucher or credit card. Processing fee may apply for credit card payment."

    • you buy and use multiple gift cards. i usually buy one (smaller amount) to determine the exchange rate. then buy another with exact amount to pay the rest.

  • For flights from Australia, avoid fees using POLi.

For flights from Singapore, you can buy a gift voucher in SGD for the amount of the fare and pay using that.
    Or book via 3rd party, e.g. trip.com .
Skyscanner shows the full fare including hidden fees.

  • I just tested this and the rate was pretty close to what Google said. For SGD60, it came through as AUD62.55 (1.0425), while Google says AUD62.12 (1.0353).

Hey all, some credit card companies offer free travel insurance, $20 per head for insurance is pretty small price to pay IMO.
