      Yeah, just thinking that.

    • Sorry, noob question but what does the hack let you do?

      • +3

The platform is currently open wide to do anything you want, like install 3rd party software like game emulators or even nefarious things like Piracy. This is on a hardware level so Nintendo can't do anything until they release a new revision.

      • +1

Not much by itself, but CFW is in the works, so in future you can run game patches, perform save backups, pirate games etc.

The recently released exploit is a bootrom one, which means it's unpatchable. That means it'll work on any system version on a vulnerable system (all current systems are vulnerable). In recent system updates for the Switch, there's mention of a Switch with different hardware to what they currently use, so it appears that Nintendo is releasing a revised version with the exploit patched. That means the current exploit won't work on Switch consoles with the new hardware, but will continue to work on the older Switches with the older hardware.

With how active the switch modding scene is though, there will be exploits for the Switch with revised hardware, although nobody knows how long that will take (as it took a year for this exploit to be made public) and it might not be a bootrom exploit, which means it can be patched in a system update and Nintendo will be playing a game of cat and mouse with exploits, new ones being released and being patched all the time, sort of like how there's been no real update to the 3ds since march 2015, it's only been security patches.

        • Is it definite that they will be able to get pirated games to run? Asking due to interest in how this will affect 3rd party developers working on switch games.

        • @soaringphoenix: Seems inevitable and very soon although no mods are publically available yet.

        • +1

@soaringphoenix: I've read that it may not be possible for some time due to the level of encryption with the games. Emulators however will work I have even heard reports of the dolphin emulator working.

        • @ruddiger7: Several game encryption keys are already public, so now it's just a matter of time.

        • @soaringphoenix: Several game encryption keys are already public, so now it's just a matter of time. The Nintendo piracy scene has always been active and shows no sign of dying out any time soon.

    • Theory is buy as many switches as you can right and sell for double the price I. Future =profit

      • There will be new exploits released and with how many switches have been made already that are vulnerable (17.79 million sold as of March 31) you'd have a lot of trouble trying to get back even the cost price selling them preowned.

        • Nope.. Doubt it… Switch is a very popular platform.. I think early model switches will be in high demand when they release the new model… I think they will release very soon as they themselves have known about the issue for quite a while now. I have 2 which are used regularly by the kids.. Might buy another for future :) if i can find one cheap enough

That's risky because you might be unable to get system updates or any other game update.

      • Nintendo aren't going to leave existing customers out in the cold.

      • +1

It's a bootrom exploit, so it can't be patched in a system update, so it's safe to update the system and games.

    • It's almost like BigW knew there would be a heap of people looking for a switch after this announcement.

      Well played BigW… Well played

    • Sure it's new version as well.

  • People say they can use5% Woolworths gift card to buy eBay gift card in store. In that way you can save a little more. Haven't try myself. But did use wish gift card to buy other brand gift card at Woolworths before.

    • No problems with paying by gift cards on EBay. I use this method all the time with other ebay coupons

  • Wondering whether its worth it to wait for EOFY sales or just commit to this one?

(Considering that Nintendo rarely goes on sale)

    Thoughts?

    • +1

Just buy it now, you'll be waiting a while for not much of a discount.

    • +1

I do not think that the RRP will go down in the next year, so unless you can get something like the AMEX cashback from Harvey Norman or similar this is probably going to be the best/easiest sale price for a while.

How long do you recommend one waits for a $20 discount? 6 months? Another year?

        • +2

I don't think you particularly give two shits about my answer to your straw man question given how you've phrased it.

So why don't just directly reply to Dongas1 and tell them to ignore my opinion instead of wasting your time with me.

Just because $20 is nothing to you doesn't mean it isn't to someone else. That's 5% saving and it's clearly worth a lot to hundreds of other OzBargainers https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354408

          @Blitzfx:

thank you for your opinion Blitzfx! was helpful to see the other prices that the switch could drop down to.

I might use the same code to grab the switch @ Target Ebay store, as they allow in store returns if I find any better deals in the mean time!

(Also just sold my DS for a decent price to go toward this, so I essentially will be buying it at $320)

        • -2

@Blitzfx: hey man, I like to save $20 too. But not if I have to wait months to do so. That’s months of not experiencing that thing for the sake of $20.

If it was 25% cheaper, yeah, maybe I’ll wait.

        • 11 days but save an extra $70 instead

Was the 11 days of experience worth $70, I wonder…

    • Blitzfx told me to reply to you to tell you to ignore his opinion about waiting a long time for the sake of $20.

Just get it now and enjoy it. You won’t remember the $20 by tomorrow.

    • For the sake of $20 and getting a console that has a hardware exploit is worth far more than the $20 you will save later on.

I spent so much time looking at department stores to make sure I got 3DS that was at a certain firmware pretty sure I wasted more than $20 looking for it.

If you do not care for modding, then think of the resale value afterwards.

  • -3

rumours of a pro model coming out soon, worth waiting I wonder hmmmm

    • +8

No pro just a hack patched version.

    • +2

There are no credible rumors of a Pro model. Just a hardware refresh to patch exploit vectors, etc.

    • +1

May have more memory, but won't be available to consumers, only devs.

  • -2

    Ehh

  • Grabbed one plus Mario Kart for $470, thanks OP

  • would they price match this in stores? Since it is from their ebay store

    • +1

Probably not at the discount is run by eBay.

    • +2

No because it's an ebay discount, not BigW

      • thanks for the info. Forgot ebay do their own deals

  • bummer, been on the lookout for Yellow Neon Joy-Cons and none of them stock them on eBay

  • +2

Picked one up for $369 this morning using PAYBACK (but it was last one).

Pretty sure best price ever was $359 (Kogan).

    • +1

Great price, I think anything under $400 is a win but that price is amazing, well done.

    • Just curious how did it get down to $369 with PAYBACK ? I'm now seeing $386 after PAYBACK

      • I don't know if the seller integrity_lane (?) has anymore but that was the last one listed for $410 before PAYBACK.

        • ah different seller. Gotcha , thanks !

    • Got myself one for $377, listed as brand new but as long as it's in decent condition I'll be happy with the $20 odd saving.

  • out of stock

  • It's back in stock if anyone is still looking but limited availability

  • Finally bit the bullet this morning and picked up one for myself :o Where am I going to find the time…

  • Back in stock, about 20 units left at time of posting.
