Cheapest method to port out from Telstra to port back in again

I'm looking for the cheapest and easiest company to port to and then port back to take advantage of the Telstra family and friends deal.
I understand it may take a couple days, i had a look at optus' prepaid sims which have free delivery but it says you have to recharge minimum $10 to activate. So whats the next best option that's not on the telstra network, and easily accessible, either with free delivery or available at the local Coles, and can be easily ported and activated with no additional costs?

    • Aldi sim took 3 weeks to arrive for me, and by the time it arrived I'd given up, so it was a waste of money.

      • You can buy them over the counter in Aldi stores (if you have Aldi nearby).

  • Pretty sure they've had issues before of that not working inside 30 days

really need a wiki guide as this question pops up at least once a week.

  • So to be safe is it best to port out for a month before porting back? Is there any harm in trying within a couple days to see if it works, and if it doesn't just try again next month?

  • I did it using a $2 Vodafone sim from Coles. May cost you an extra $1, but you don't have to wait for it to arrive.

    • Looking on vodafones website it looks like you have to add credit to activate it… did you have to add credit when you did it?

      • No, I was able to activate it without adding credit. I needed to add a minimum $10 recharge if I wanted to use it/make calls. It was about this time last year that I did it though, so may have changed since then.

        • The rules did change some time back.
All $2 sims require a minimum $10 recharge to activate now

          • @jimbobaus: Telstra will still activate without recharge
