3TB Hitachi Hard Drive in USB3.0 External Case $209.95 + $9.99 Metro P&H [Shopping Square]

150

3TB Hitachi drive in a Skymaster USB 3.0 enclosure. Shipping seems to be a flat rate of $9.99 but I only checked a few main cities (you can easily check your own without logging in).

Spotted this in my inbox today, ends midnight Wednesday - I checked Static Ice and the cheapest 3TB USB3 was $256 for a WD. I'll let you guys suss out your local suppliers and see if there's anything cheaper out there.

Before you newbies ask… no, this is isn't a 2.5" (it's 3.5") and no it won't run off your USB port (it has a separate 240V power pack).

Gawd knows if the enclosure is much good. But price seems pretty fair… a 2TB USB3 Samsung Story is about $135 on eBay. So this is only a little bit more per TB ($73.30 vs $67.50) - which isn't too bad.

Hmmm - I wonder if it's got the 7K3000 7200rpm 6Gb/s SATA with 64MB cache inside? (I have no idea and it's not mentioned in the advert)

  • Seems Ok, cheapest for a 3TB Hitachi 7k3000 is $195+ship on SI. I'm assuming this is the same drive inside?

    • Do Hitachi make a slower (or any other) 3TB drive than the 7K3000?

Here is Shopping Square's page on the drive (only $229.95 LOL), but there is specs listed there…

      http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_83334_Hitachi_0S03208_3TB…

Just noticed the spec on the 3TB has 512K sectors… does that sound correct (ie: not "Obtuse Format")?

    • Found it, half way down the SS page.

So to buy or not to buy, that is the question.

  • And does anyone know if they detect/void the warranty if you open the case, given that its an aftermarket case?

    • +1

That is a really interesting question - what happens when the retailer sells the normally separate bare HD and case assembled as one unit. It seems like it could be similar to a pre-built computer system as far as the warranty is concerned.

I'd be wanting the case and hard disk to be listed separately on the tax invoice so I'm on firm ground if I approach the manufacturer for warranty service.

      • 1 Year warranty in Australia

        Darn tootin'! ;)

  • Great deal when you consider that alternative options such as seagate or WD offer something similar but only in a USB2 option for the same price. i.e Umart http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2…

    Great find!

  • "a 2TB USB3 Samsung Story is about $135 on eBay"

Story Station is a piece of shit. Mine died after a month and RMA has taken 3 weeks so far.

    • Happens with all electronics, unfortunately - early failures.

      • true but 3 weeks for a return is pretty long, I bet they dont extend his warranty by 3 weeks when he finally gets it back.

        • I would have taken it back to the retailer and asked for it to be swapped on the spot. No way I'd agree to an RMA on a brand new device…. Any of that crap from them and I'd have Fair Trading on my mobile while I stood there.

    • Correction, YOUR Samsung Story is a piece of shit.

Mine is brilliantly spinning along, going on 3 months now.

It's what happens with HDDs, every single manufacturer is going to produce some duds every now and then.

      Grow up.

  • I'll wait for when 20,000 Million Terrabytes is available on sale for $1. LOL
