Google Play: Rent Movies from $0.99

1990

Google Play Store is doing 99c movie rentals. There are two different deals, listed below.

Deal 1: Rent any 1 movie for $0.99

This deal expires on 26/12/2018, so get in quick!
Looks like this one's expired now. The banner is no longer showing up for me.

Instructions
  1. Grab your phone
  2. Open the Google Play app on your phone
  3. Make sure you're on the app's home tab (not Games, Movies, etc)
  4. In the carousel at the top, look for a red banner titled $0.99 for any movie rental. You might need to scroll the carousel to the left or right to see it.
  5. In the banner, click Redeem now

The voucher is now on your account. Your next movie rental will be $0.99. You can use it by 1/1/2019.

Make sure to use this on a movie that isn't already discounted in Deal 2 below, since you might waste your voucher.

Deal 2: Rent select movies for $0.99+

Not sure when this one expires. Maybe at end of year?

Instructions
  1. Open Google Play Store (desktop or phone)
  2. Go to Movies & TV
  3. Scroll down to Movie rentals from 99¢

Is set 2 correct? some of those movies, at least for me, say that they are 99c rentals, but when I go to rent, it says $2.99.

    • +3

I'm not sure. I copied the titles straight out of the web page. Which ones are showing at the wrong price?

EDIT: I see what you mean. I'm getting the same problem in the mobile app, but the correct price shows on the "Rent" button on my desktop PC.
EDIT 2: Just added a note about this to the instructions.

      • I'll just list a few, maybe prices are different for people? (targeted maybe?)
        Logan - $2.99
        Deadpool - $2.99
Fate of the Furious - $2.99
        Tag - $1.99
        Atomic Blonde - $2.99
        etc

        Some are also $1.99

        • Thanks for catching that. So it looks like an issue with the store, but the rent button says $0.99 if you do it on a desktop PC, so try that and hopefully it'll work!

@Sam401928374019: It's only showing $0.99 because its assuming that you will apply the coupon.

Google messed up and added movies that aren't $0.99 or they forgot to change the rental value to $0.99

            • @GTR12: Oh, you're right. It's assuming you're going to use the coupon from set 1. I'll update the instructions. Thanks for figuring that out!

            • +1

@GTR12: All fixed up now. The store actually said "from 99c" but I'd misread it and assumed they were all 99c.

You wouldn’t steal a handbag, would you?

Thanks OP. I got a 99c for any rental deal, so looks like different offers for different people as above

  • +9

I didn't have the offer in my carousel so I force closed and cleared cache on the Play Store app and after that it was the first offer.

I got 99c for any rental too.

    • Thanks for this

    • Works like a charm. Thanks :)

    • Thx for that, cleared cache and now shows up

  • I tried 1st method and it seems for any movie for me, it showed expiry date as Jan1st

  • some rentals comes up as 0.25c

  • +2

Wish all movies could be rented for a maximum of $1.

Maybe with new releases at $2.

    Own for $3?

Piracy would lose so much economic viability.

    • +4

I wish you could buy a new BMW for $8000

      • BMW would lose money on every sale; no-one (necessarily) so with the former propositions. Any association or comparison is invalid.

  • Not having any luck on phone for set 1, carousel doesn't appear at the top - instead, have to scroll to bottom, click on the 'shop now' under biggest deals of the year. I then scroll down to "movie rentals from 99c" and click "MORE" but then I can only choose from 30 or so movies - and can't see any from set 1. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

    • Try dazweeja's trick in the comment above. Let me know if it works!

      • No luck :( No carousel at the top, and when I do scroll to the bottom, same as before! D:

        • Not sure what's going wrong. :(

For me, the carousel shows up the top between "Top Charts" etc and "New & updated games".

Only other thing I can think of is pressing "Clear Data" instead of "Clear Cache" for Google Play Store.

    • Everyone who's not getting set 1: follow the link in ops post here instead of opening google play on your own. I got the "Redeem now" button only after I used ops link, and you dont have to go to the Movies tab either it was in the Home tab up the top, red banner.

If I didn't follow ops link I went to Movies tab and found the banner but got movie set 2.

Ty OP, got the Home Alone rental sorted for tonight 👌

  • I think if you get one from set 2, the set 1 list is no longer available.

I had both open sets open in 2 tabs, I bought one movie from set 2, then tried to buy one from set 1, and it was full priced rental ($4.99).

I can now no longer see the first sets' carousel button too btw.

    • Once you rent any movie, it probably automatically uses the voucher from Set 1. I'll have to update the post to clarify.

  • Noice!! 👍 Thanks OP

  • +1

Thanks op!! I think the discount works on more than the movies you have listed. For example, i rented sicario 2 for 0.99 down from 6.99 HD rental.

    • You're right; I think it's for all movies. I'll update the post if I get time.

  • Do I need to watch the movie on my phone or does it work on the TV with Chromecast?

    • +2

Should be able to chrome cast it

      • +2

I've used Chromecast with Google Play Movies before, and it worked really well. After renting it on your phone or computer, you should be able to cast it to the Chromecast.

        • +1

Agreed, it works great through Chromecast.

  • +1

    Requires an Android phone?

    • +2

You can buy through the website. You can watch on your computer or iOS if you don't have Android.

    • I could only get the 0.99 offer on my android phone, not my (main) iphone

  • Just curious but when was the last time anyone's seen any special offer (like -50%) on movie purchases (not rentals)?

  • Wish streaming companies make HD rentals a bit reasonable like videoezy renting. $4-$5 is good for new releases and more people will choose. Currently it is $7-8 and quality is not great compared to blu-ray discs.

What your rewards are for. Basically free rentals

  • Got a rental for 99 cents on The Google Play movie app on my smart tv after a accepting the offer and then I opened the app on my android and saw the banner was still there for the same promotion I had just accepted so I clicked it and it let me rent a second movie for 99 cents. Give it a go

  • Just remember it's 24 hours expiry once you start within 30 days

  • Opened the Google play app and went to the movie section. Saw the banner and saved the $0.99 voucher and it says valid for use until 15/01/19.

  • Thanks i watched 2 movies yesterday.

  • My coupon redemption never had the option of a 99c rental it’s always been 1.99

  • +1

99c just worked for me. Thx

  • 99 cents offer also seems to work for me this morning (Google offered it when viewing PlayStore from my phone). Be quick before it's gone again.

    • Is it an android thing. I know it sounds suspicious but would they not offer it through my browser as I’m using an iPhone? I know YouTube is pricier subscription in an iPhone than on an android device

  • 99c for any rental still available for me. Just redeemed. Tks

  • Thanks. It worked first time

  • Enjoyed watching Fallout and Deadpool 2. Thanks OP! Now for ant man and wasp :)

  • I’ve used the promotion twice on 2 different google accounts in the same phone but I can’t for a third google account. Any reason behind this?

  • A Quiet Place is now $5.99

    • Thanks, I've removed it from the list.
