Wooohoooo, and bargaining beginning for the brick…

      • +30

Do you own apple stocks or something? You seem obsessed.

        • +21

No, he just loves making false accusations against huawei to create FUD so he can try to buy a cheap phone. Not sure why he keeps doing that on Ozbargain like we have the influence to cause any change to the prices

          • @johnwinkle: Well, there are a lot of Huawei Apologists here on OzBargain.

Remember when I criticised the $1,400 P30 Pro from a little while back? It's a device that is as good (if not better) than this one. Nah, can't have criticism for <insertbrandname> lol.

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7308149/redir

            • -6

@Kangal: I was reading your list here, why didn't you mention the lack of LED notification?
I agree the price is ludicrous! $800 for a phone? $300 for a watch? Time for the fatman to take a break.

              =no LED notification

              • high price
              • off software
              • poor durability
              • weak speakers
              • no headphone jack
              • no microSD, FM Radio, or IrDa
              • no bootloader unlock/root/custom roms
              • poor bezels/screen to body bezels/bad aspect ratio

…so I'd say this would've been a good flagship, and I remember when flagships used to cost AUD $800
If this device was half this price, the OEM would still be making a good profit, and it would feel more fair priced for consumers

          • -8

@johnwinkle: Funny with the new discounted prices, they only sold 3 p30 pro and 2 mate 20 pro after the ban! It looks all the Huawei apologists are Chinese propaganda and not real customers.

If these discussions have no effect, why some dictatorship apologists are boiling and can't move on?

            • +4

              @[Deactivated]:

why some dictatorship apologists are boiling and can't move on?

Is this really coming from the guy who has made 36 comments spreading false info about Huawei in the last 24 hours? LOL

              • -7

@johnwinkle: I wouldn't care about a spying agency being criticised!

                Why would you care?

Why would you care about my comments history? Why are you going through my profile history over criticising a spying agency? What are you looking for, more than the current discussion?

    • +3

Let's make a bet that Huawei will be unbanned everywhere.

850$ for mate 20 pro is a crazy steal

      • +7

        At the current stage the companies who we know aren't dealing with them (at least unless the USA removes the blacklist);
        - Google (Android)
        - Microsoft (Windows for their PCs)
        - Intel (Processors, also for PCs)
        - ARM (processor design for all their phones)

It's obviously not the end of Huawei (especially in the largest phone market - China), but unless you want phones that don't have Googles Play Store and with no future silicon designs, or PCs that run… Linux? on old phone processors, it's going to be quite limiting for many.

Unfortunately the US-China tradewar doesn't seem to be slowing at the moment (assuming their are not actual security issues with Huawei)… so I'm not holding my breath

        • +1

Add SD association to that list. The won't be able to put in micro SD card slots! Read it today. Can anyone confirm?

          • @roastchook: lol, what will stop them from implementing it? Not like SD association can ban them.

          • @roastchook: Didn't matter anyway like their bloody nano sd

        • Add Qualcomm and WiFi Alliance

      • +4

Let's make a bet that Huawei will be unbanned everywhere.
850$ for mate 20 pro is a crazy steal

$850 for a Huawei phone released 7 months ago is a steal?

        • +7

$900 for the Samsung S10, sounds like a better deal, than the Huawei Mate 20 Pro / Huawei P30 Pro for $800.

I blame Apple for raising its prices, and OnePlus for copying the trend. Value in smartphones have steadily been decreasing from 2016 - 2020, with a few exceptions to the rule.

        • Nope not a steal once ban is permanent. It will be less.

      • +2

I sold my iphone max and switched to mate 20x, better phone for me but worried about future now

  • -7

Plus $200 egift card can be claimed from Huawei Promotions website. Mobicity is included partner for promotions.

Brings down P30 pro to $998

    • +4

The promotion ended on 12 May. Is there a new one?

    • +1
      • You can only claim here… Must be purchased by 12 May

    • -1

Why is this getting down votes?

      • +8

Have you looked at a calendar recently?

        • Oh lol.

  • +5

MC are killing it lately, great pricing!

  • -1

    Grey import? no TRS? Warranty?

    • +7

Australian stock, warranty and tax invoice provided.

  • +2

I wouldn't be expecting much in the way of updates following the recent moves against Huawei by the US

    • +9

From my understanding, they can still update after the updates reach AOSP. They just don't get any support from Google nor the early access that OEMs typically get.

      • No newer android updates but I believe if you have Google software at purchase you should be fine. Well hopefully there be good Linage OS rom with Gapps.

        • +3

Bootloader is locked on huawei phones

      • I used to have Android 9.0 on my P20 Pro earlier this year.

But it'd become faulty and I eventually got a replacement this month. Yet this 'new' replacement only has Android 8.1.

I clicked "CHECK FOR UPDATES" many times under different networks and it still didn't work.

Isn't P20 Pro an existing device before all this happened? Waiting for a reply for Huawei Australia…

      • +2

Well, good luck! In Hong Kong, bunch of Huawei's phones just got bricked after an overnight update.
        From Google News Hong Kong:

Lol all trump is doing is holding a ransom on the Chinese government with hopes of securing are more biased favouring to the USA unfair trade deal. Fk trump for doing this shit. They did the same thing to ZTE and they can trade as normal. My guess is there going to force there own nsa back-door spywear on all Huawei devices and then will be business as usual. That is what is is really about. Imo lol

      • +2

All china has to do is the same thing to Apple..

China also hold the largest deposit of rare earth which is needed in almost every major electronics components
and it looks like they are responding with this move

        https://www.news.com.au/finance/economy/rare-earth-embargo-c…

        • +2

China already did this to Google 9 years ago and the U.S. was fine with it & reacted with nothing, why wouldn't China be fine with this one.

    • +2

Disagree. A week or two after the announcement Huawei pushed out a Google security update for my p20 pro.

  • +3

    Good price

    on Mobileciti ebay page:

Please note: Regarding the recent developments on the USA bans of Huawei, it is a rapidly evolving situation. Huawei Australia have released a statement to reassure consumers that existing devices will not be affected by the ban, the full statement can be found at:
    http://huaweihub.com.au/huawei-statement/

We will continue to work closely with communicating with both Huawei and our valued customers. Please feel free to contact us if you have any queries

So no need to worry about dicey politics for existing devices?

    • +3

Only issue is you be stuck with Android Pie, so you won't be able to update to Android 10. Some apps will only work on the latest OS.

This isn't a big issue if you upgrade your phone every few years.

      • +3

It does mean resale value will probably drop off a cliff, if that's a consideration for frequent upgraders.

        • +1

I update my phone every 2 years. Resale isn't much of a concern for me as superceded Samsungs Galaxies are worth bugger all when the new one is released.

A 2yo Samsung Galaxy S8 retailing at over $1,000 is worth less than $400 now. But at least it will support future Android OS's.

So really, secondhand resale isn't going to be much of a concern. If it was, purchase an iPhone.

      • +1

Your huawei devices still may be upgraded to Android 10. Android is an open-source project, it wont be banned under EAR.

The coming huawei phones (mate 30?) may not be able to pre-install google suite, that's it!

For some people, that's good if you wanna out of control by google.

        • Well, you can update it but you will have to jail break the device.

Very few people can or want to jail break a device.

End of the day, Android won't support the device with the future Android OS's.

          • +2

@JimB: That's not correct. Huawei can use the AOSP to update to Android 10.

The lack of a licence between Google and Huawei (if the ban goes into effect) mean that Huawei do not get pre-release support to upgrade their phones to new versions.

            • @DogGunn: is right.

Any current or currently stocked huawei are fine and will be updated. Just not be as fast as previous.

Its the new stock that you need to worry about.

This is an unreal deal for the Mate 20

  • -3

    About time Huawei :D

Waiting for P30 Pro to go sub $600. Only issue will be no software updates which is fine. However nice camera and hardware though.

    • +9

Not sure why you're being down-voted.

Sub $600 is realistic in future. It may take a while, but I can see if getting there if the ban is not lifted.

      • Is see that happening too due to the current ban.

      • 100% realistic. I'm waiting for the last flagship that gets updates from Huawei and score a bargain later

  • +9

This is why it always pays to buy electronics with price protection. I bought in at 1498, claimed at 1080 and now going to claim it again!

    • +1

how many times can you claim it for?

      • +1

        til it gets to $0

      • As many times as you want, each item is covered up to $600 in price drop. I'm was grandfathered into the old Coles Mastercard price protection insurance so any price drop within 2 years.

    • how do you get price protection?

      • some credit cards offer price protection and will refund the difference if you find a cheaper price for when you paid for it. amex and 28 degrees are the ones I know of that offer this on their cards

        • I have a couple of Amex's and have never been able to find anything re price protection. Is it a specific Amex ?

      • The best one at the moment imo is the 28 degrees credit card one. Any price drop within 12 months.

    • Is this thru 28deg's? To have this price protection, are there additional charges for the card?

      • +1

If you pay off your balance before the statements are formed, you get the insurance and it doesn't cost you anything!

    • You claimed on ebay sales? I was told they don't accept ebay sales anymore :(

      • I've done it multiple times thru latitude who covers the price protection on my grandfathered price protection insurance for my coles credit card.

        • Cool, I'll give it a go! I got rejected before for coupons supplies by ebay

  • +17

Huawei No Thanks Mate 20 Pro

    fixed….

    • +1

      LOL!

    • +1

Like you even understand the 5G network race…

      • -8

Like you would know if I do or not… LOL

        • +1

Oh trust me… after reading a few of your comments we know…

  • it still looks good as a furniture piece. ill wait until its 100

  • +3

Until the Trade War is rectified Huawei phones are not viable buys imo.

    • +2

BUT, if it is reversed, however unlikely, would be a sweet deal.

For that to be true it would need to be reversed by the time new Huawei phones come out.

    • +6

      Quite the contrary.
US: I'll give you 90 days.
      HUAWEI: nah, we are good.
US: Okay, give us 90 days.

      • US is a bit over on this trade war game, how can they stop the company to do business outside of US.

  • +3

It looks like Huawei choose the highway

  • i don't have ebay Plus…freaking hell

  • anyone care to explain to me is ebay plus have free trail? then why they have Add payment method (AU $49.00 per year)? need to create different account?

    • +2

The Plus moniker is meant to make you think you're getting more than a standard, free eBay account.

You do get more for items that are marked as a Plus item (free returns, free postage if it isn't bulky)

For the $49 to be worth it you need to buy a lot and have a need for a few returns, otherwise it isn't worth it. And with Sir Jack D Price frequenting eBay deals, it still might not be worth it.

No need to create a new account - can be applied to existing, but if you want the free trial, you'd need to create a new one if you've made use of the free trial before.

      • free trail which cost nothing for the phone price of $848.30…

  • +4

Life is a Huawei, I wouldn't ride it all night long

    • +4

Yeah their on the Huawei to Hell…

      • +6

I was gonna say best pun of the day but noticed your spelling mistake

        They're*

  • +1

I think you might get a better deal if you hold tight

  • +1

The race to the bottom has begun…

  • +3

I can't believe it if the people are willing to pay that price for a dummy phone.

    • lol, the device doesn't just stop working. You just dont' get android updates if the ban continues.

      • I had LGs… what's this about Android update?

    • Current huawei phones are good. They will get updates and everything. It's the upcoming phones that might have issues. So it's time to find a good deal on p30 pro.

  • +1

For all of the U.S. posturing re Huawei can't China who has more than %80 market share of Rare Earth just say: Back to the stone age for you no semi conductor industry?

  • +2

Plot twist, this is actually part of Huawei's sales strategy to overtake Samsung as No.1 smartphone shipments worldwide.

  • if the Mate 20 Pro hits $700 I'm pulling the trigger. Will gladly take no further android updates at discount prices. Still great phones.

  • +4

    4 hours 20 minutes after this post, 97+, 0-, but only 3 mate20 and 1 p30pro were sold.
