  • Seriously considering going… How is it for someone who doesn't speak French? And is it worth going for a long weekend in general?

    • I was there for one day on a cruise (not recommended), everyone I talked to spoke enough English for me to get by. Even when getting away from tourist spots.

      • The cruise or Noumea is not recommended ?

      • can you elaborate on why you don’t recommend?

      • Is just a single day trip not recommended or visiting there entirely?

      • I don't recommend visiting as part of a cruise, it makes the city pretty crowded. You also don't even get a whole day to see and do everything!

Im going for a long weekend and cant wait. First night in somewhere cheap (AU$100) cause you arrive late. A small island nearby to noumea for a night and then the Hilton for a night. I think thatll be enough around Noumea. I did look at car hire and cruising around the main island which looks great too but i think a week would be better for that.

  • This is a great price - whenever I've priced up a flight to NC it's always been $750+

  • Great price though at least checking from Melbourne, it blows a 3h 50m flight into a 16h 50m via a Brisbane stopover… not sure it's worth the long journey

  • What is there to do in Noumea for the week long trips that some of these flights require? Has anyone been, and can suggest things to do?

    • Learn to dive, lay on the beach…the usual tropical island type stuff.

    • It's a great place for kitesurfing!

Just keep in mind New Caladonia is a French territory so prepare for Western prices, even higher than Australia.

As a quick point of comparison, a big mac meal is over AUD$16.

Budget holiday seekers should look at nearby Vanuatu or Fiji…..particually given the state of the AUD.

Shop at supermarkets and cook your own

      • Cool I'll cook myself then :D

        • Not sure whether you'd be tasty when cooked but whatever suits you 😉

    • I remember an awesome French bakery in noumia

We went for 5 days in Easter 2018. I loved it because it reminded me of France (but closer to home). We rented a car because of 9yo and 2yo; manual transmission is cheaper so get used to shifting while driving on the right side of the road ("keep right, keep right" chanting helps). We stayed at some slightly-dilapidated apartment hotel in Anse Vata but it had a great balcony with an excellent view south and west so we enjoyed seeing the lighthouse at the reef's edge (bring binocs) and the sunsets. Drove to supermarkets to get food for cooking - all the French faves like Geant, Carrefour, Champion. Activities: aquarium, kids park at Oeun Toro (next to public pool), beach, watch kite-surfers, eat at Baie des Citrons, hotel pool because kids, visit town and their fish market. Wasn't impressed with town centre at all so I can understand why cruise passengers could be disillusioned by the city. And, yes, it's pricey because of isolation and French economics. Would go again.

  • We went to 3 islands there on a cruise. It was wonderful. Did so much snorkeling up close with turtles. My kids loved it.
