Been thinking about learning AUSLAN for a while now.
    Cheers OP!

How much is it usually though? I.e. is this a bargain?

    • +4

      Android is normally $20 AUD
      IOS is normally $19.99 AUD

  • People that know AUSLAN: How intelligible is it to other English systems such as ASL?

    • Can you be more explicit in how you want to compare them?

    • +6

AUSLAN is close to British sign language and New Zealand sign language. If you look at the alphabet they are the same.

American sign language is very different even in the alphabet, ASL uses a one hand system for this, while AUSLAN is a two handed system for finger spelling.

Then you will get to regional AUSLAN dialects, some signs in QLD are different to Vic. From memory the sign for thirsty in Vic is horny in QLD, so you need to be careful sometimes.

Life is full of happy accidents.

      • Thanks. Really interesting that there are regional variations.

I have a feeling this one’s always free on iPhone. I’ve already got it installed and I certainly didn’t pay $20 for it. Still, it’s a decent app so worth grabbing 👌

    • Might have been the key sign version

Note that the app size is 926 MB on iOS. If you have smaller capacity, you may want to free up space.

Thanks heaps! I missed it last time it was free. Have it now.

  • This has been free in the past for small periods. Currently, this is free because of combinations of International Week of the Deaf (IWD), International day of Sign Languages, and as well as Australia's National Week of the Deaf. These events happens at the end of the September.
