Heat Beads Hardwood Lump Charcoal 10kg $10 (Was $25) @ Woolworths

300

Spotted at my local Woolworths. This works out to be half the Bunnings price so it’s a good deal.

Can’t see it on their website but I spoke with the attendant at front counter who said that it’s nationwide.

Here's my receipt with date if anyone wants to take a shot at a price-matching @ Bunnings - https://imgur.com/qnF4gsx
Not sure if they will though because they only stock 20kg bags.

PERFECT PRESENT FOR MY CHEATING WIFE AHAHAH
    I'm so lonely

  • I normally use briquettes, never tried lump before. This is even cheaper per kg than the popular 4kg/$5 Heatbeads briquette deals.

    • Lump is the best for hot and fast.

The 4kg bag deals are only a slightly better price than Bunnings.

I have switched from briquettes to lump charcoal. Heats up quicker and gets hotter. Briquettes are better for longer cooks.

      • I only do quick cooks anyway like a steak or snags. In hindsight I regretted not stocking up on even one bag of the briquettes during the last Heatbeads deal as I'm a non-regular griller working through the big blue coconut bag atm. Maybe this will make up for it if I see it.
(My thinking is more it's so cheap I'll worry about the differences later lol)

briquettes are made from sawdust + additives (chemicals); they are harder to light, leaves behind more ash but burn for longer.
lump charcoal is natural (no additives); they light easier, leaves behind less ash, but will burn out quicker (and also burns hotter).

it's cheaper/kg because you potentially need more for your BBQ (depending on what you are cooking).

      • What "chemicals' are you referring to?

I wouldn't be hesitant to use heatbeads unless they were the easy light variety, much like no one should ever use starter fluid.

  • Nice deal but none at my local Woolworths store.

    • A month ago I saw someone in one of my BBQ groups post a photo of an aisle full of the bags. I'd say that only certain stores stocked them as a promotional thing and now they're being cleared out through a few stores as this is the first I've seen them in my local.

  • And your local Woolies is at?

South Yarra, 4 bags there an hour ago.

These have a weird smell I would stay away

    • Have you used other lump? I haven't had lump that didn't smell like this and I've tried a few brands.

      • Yep firebrand. Big difference . Harder to get though. Not stocked widely.

I actually prefer this to Firebrand…

        • My last two bags were Firebrand. Mine smells no different. In fact better, more uniform sized pieces in these bags than my Firebrand bags.
