Found this deal via an ad that popped up.
Seems you don't need to own any of the phones to get the 20% off.

Some reports if it working on the pixel 4a too.

I did not go through all the options, but
$999 to $799.20 for pixel 5
$799 to $639.20 for a pixel 4a with 5g.
$599 to $479.20 for a pixel 4a

Mod Note: You need to obtain a unique code from the linked page (select any phone), but you don't actually need to trade it in. The code you receive will apply to all 3 phones, even the regular pixel 4a, even though it's not a listed option on the linked page.

    That would be 20% off a pixel 5 = $800, not bad
    (From pixel 3 XL)

    • +1

Going by pixel value, it will be $500 after pixel 6 releases plus 6 months.

      • Pixel is rumoured to use SD 780G or in-house Whitechapel

I doubt it will be better than SD888. no chance. Price wise probably 1k. I doubt they will make Pixel 5 <$500 maybe $600-$700?

        • +2

I got 28d price protection for when that does happen :P
handy getting the 3 XL half price that time for $750, then they went down to $588 at HN.
You still get something back when selling old one as well.

          • +1

@G-rig: 28 degrees….ever since they made changes to bpay payments i just cancelled it

            • +2

@neonlight: Can't make Bpayments? Guess iv'e got other accounts for that.
It's a pretty good card for travel with no international purchase fees or currency conversion etc
The price protection makes it worthwhile, not offered for new accounts now.

              • @G-rig: I found Transfer wise card better travel wise.

              • +1

@G-rig: There was a fee attached also they got rid of the top up positive balance credit, used to be no withdrawal fees when doing this overseas.

                • @neonlight: Yeah and cash advances had no fees.
The preloaded amount above the limit wasn't insured and it's a credit card so not designed for that. A good combo is The Citi debit plus card as well

                  • @G-rig: Yes citibank debit is what I replaced with

There is really no reason to go from 3XL to 5 unless you desperately need a wide angle lense.

3XL has a faster processor, unlimited Original quality photo/video storage until Feb 2022.

Camera quality has been stagnant since the 2XL.

I hope Google get their flagship game back together instead of these side stepping moves.

      • basically agree, besides longer batter and tax deduction/current phone updates past Oct.

      • Other main difference seems to be 5G support

      • I'm in this boat. I havent found any value proposition to upgrade since the 3XL,

3XL has the front wide selfie camera - something that I actually use often, plus all the stronger points you mentioned above, moving to pixel 5 is a downgrade, not an upgrade.

        • Oh wow I did not even notice that the 5 is slower than my 3XL - I just made an assumption it'll be an upgrade.

Also wasn't looking forward to losing the wide selfie camera.

I was wondering why the phones seemed so cheap vs the 3XL which was $1500 when it launched - just assumed Google gave up on their flagship pricing.

          • @Shadowsfury: Your battery probably won't hold up well that's for sure on 3 XL. Until 2022 Feb hmmmm

            • @neonlight: I bought my 3XL on release day in 2018.

But in August or Sept last year I got a replacement 3XL from Google funnily enough due to battery issues (it was only charging a few % then stopping). So my battery life is great now.

I probably would have changed the battery once I hit the 2 year mark anyway.

              • @Shadowsfury: Oh that's nice. So it was replaced within the two year mark? Good to know Google gives warranty

      • Was going to keep holding off until the rumoured pixel 6 (currently using the Pixel 4 XL 128gb) but couldn't resist the S21 deal so ended up paying 414 for trading in my pixel.. Upgraded from the Pixel 3 XL to the 4 XL and can confirmed the 5 is not really an upgrade expect maybe say the battery life and punch hole design (which is personal perference anyways).

        • The 3xl to 4xl isn't really an upgrade either, I usually replace every second model

        • +1

          I couldn't handle Samsung bloatware

  • +8

Im holding out for the 6 to be released so I can buy the 5 (or 5a) at a significantly cheaper price… Hoping it drops well below $800 when that happens.

Considering the A52 5G was basically $600 on discount recently and is pretty similarly specced, this is a no deal for me. 🙅

    • -2

The link is doing 5 for $800

      • +4

Yes I can see that. I'm saying I'm holding out for it to be significantly lower than $800

        • If OW beat or Jb (with GC) can match price, it will be cheaper than $799.20

        • Something else will come out then you wouldn't want pixel 5 by then.

          Tech never stops

    • +3

Almost no reason to buy the current year's Pixel. I bought the 2XL a year after release and it's still going strong. Planning to pick up the 5 variant too when mine starts having problems.

      • Same here, Pixel 2 user from a year since it was launched. Still going strong even with scratches on the screen. Battey life is very good.

        • -1

But security updates have stopped i.e. very highly chance of getting virus/hacked.

    • I would argue on paper that the 5 is the 5a. Not sure specwise what you would cut out.

  • +4

When is the pixel 6 out, hopefully they fix a few of the speaker/mic issues.
Perhaps I should sell the pixel 5 and just use my newly refurbished pixel 3 XL till then, but sound like the P6 would still be $1k minimum.

    • What specifically are the issues with mic/speakers

      • +5

It's probably fine for most people but the earpiece speaker is under the screen so just sounds weird when you're talking to someone like they are fairly distant, and the sound leaks out, almost have to put your ear further down the screen. That, and it's hard to hear if you are somewhere noisy when cranked all the way up.

The external speakers are also not as loud/good quality as previous pixels with the bottom one louder than the top. When I'm in the car, it seems like the mic can't catch what I say a lot of the time, almost have to yell (have it mounted on the air vent pretty close to me, not sure if the plastic case affects it but just seems a bit average.

        • Do you find using hands free fixes this? Eg Jabra

          • @AussieMark: yes, i got some Sony wh-1000xm4 and works great together, people can hear us well etc.
Perhaps just a bit noisy in the car but crap compared to the 3 at hearing your voice.
Keen to try the genuine case perhaps.

      • Essentially the speaker is behind the center of the screen, and works similar to those speakers you place on a hard surface and vibrate the surface to make sound. Because of the positioning of the speaker and its design, the sound isn't great. Its made like this to improve the waterproofing of the device. I find I often have to gold the center of the phone to my ear to get better sound when on a call.

        • +1

pretty average really, and people can hear your call - i thought some flog at work was holding his Samsung away from his head with the speaker phone on, but it must be a similar design. I suppose they are set up for bluetooth earphones these days. Would probably prefer a small bar/notch up the top like iphones with a proper speaker and camera than having the screen go all the way to the edge.

        • +2

I often have to gold the center of the phone

          Sounds pretty expensive mate

    • I'm not hoping pixel 6 to be suddenly bump up to flagship level spec. The soc on pixel 5 isn't great. Google's selling point is software and gcam

The only question is if you get unlimited HQ photos host on pixel 6

      • By soc do you mean the downgrade in CPU? More ram is nice but still notice you get that 'waiting' refresh symbol a bit.
Experience is still smooth and fast mostly the same as the pixel 3 XL performance overall.

        • yea its CPU is not better than Snapdragon variant of 865 or 888

          • @neonlight: Hows the cpu vs a pixel 3? Pixel 3 battery blows..

            • @Kammi: Better much better. It's a much more efficient CPU

      • Haven't they reduced the limit to 15GB of free storage already?

        Pixel storage info
Important: If you have a Pixel 5 device or earlier, your current backup quality options and benefits remain unchanged. Uploads in High quality from your Pixel 2-5 devices will continue to receive unlimited free storage. However, photos and videos backed up from other devices in High quality after June 1, 2021 will start to count towards your Google Account storage.

wonder if the genuine fabric case is better as far as microphone placement when talking? They are great cases although $60 is pretty rich.

        • This is one of the reasons I'm planning to getit so to upload from pixel instead. Will slowly migrate over time to the new phone

    • I really need to replace my 2XL (battery not lasting anymore), and no updates since last November. But the 5s speakers are just crap, I can get by with the 765G chipset but the speakers are a deal breaker for me.

      • Make me wonder if I should just use the 3XL and sell my P5..
The smaller form factor for one hand operation and pocketability is good, battery lasts ages too.
May not be an issue if you use heaphones, bluetooth speakers etc, or cast to other devices. I would agree it's a bit disappointing if you try and use it as a speaker phone unless it's in very quiet locations. Hard to say if the 6 would be any different

        • +1

Trust Google to comprise the hardware in at least one significant way

          • @reactor-au: The case has two holes where the microphone/speaker is at the bottom, don't think it's that. Blew some air at it anyway and re-trained the voice recognition. Probably be alright but one thing to remember it's more of an affordable/competitive handset with good performance ($800-1000) rather than a premium handset (~$1500).

  • +2

Purchased the 5 at Telstra for $750 during sales. But for $800 a very good phone.

    • +2

I'm surprised that price hasn't been beaten yet — was hesitating on that deal but ended up getting it too!

    • +2

Likewise but i got it for $711 pricematching it with OW. Wouldn't pay more than $750 for a phone with this spec. In saying that I'm liking the Pix5!

  • +12

Works on the normal pixel 4a too. Took it down to $479.20

    • How?

      • +3

Ignore, just worked it out. Have to get promo code then apply. Thanks OP!

    • +1

yup, worked for me too. ta.

    • +4

Nice! Probably a better deal than the 5, the plain 4a is a fantastic phone for that price if you don't need 5g (does anyone really need it right now…?)

    • +4

Damn good price. Very happy with my 4a after downgrading from the 5 (speaker and overheating issues) and 4a 5g (too big for me).

Only thing I "miss" is the IP rating.

  • ugh literally purchased a pixel 4a 5g two days ago :(

  • Great timing! Just grabbed a P5 for $799.20 to replace my 3aXL which I broke the screen on yesterday!

    • broke my 3XL screen too. Tempting. Enjoying it??

  • Want to upgrade from the OP7Pro 12Gb but I keep reading that the speakers are atrocious on the 5

  • Price in title?

    • I did not go through all the options, but $999 to ~$799 for pixel 5 and $799 to ~$639 for a pixel 3 XL.

      • Didn’t know they were still selling Pixel 3 XL?

        • Sorry meant 4a 5g when selecting a pixel 3 xl as trade for in

  • When P6 will be out ?

    • +1

I just googled and apparently Oct 2021.. Date could coincide with no guaranteed future support for Pixel 3

      • Date could coincide with no guaranteed future support for Pixel 3

Not sure what this means. Do you mean an announcement that they will no longer support Pixel 3?

Otherwise it's not a guarantee in the first place if you revoke it.

        • The word is the Pixel 3/3 XL etc won't receive guaranteed supported for future updates or security patches from then, make what you will of it but not that hard to believe mate, Pixel 2 owners wouldn't be getting Android 11 etc.

          • +2

@G-rig: The 2 did get android 11. Pixel phones get 3 year's of updates, and are released in sync with new Android releases. So the 3 should get android 12 then nothing after that.

        • +1

The Pixel 3 was guaranteed 3 years of updates/support. That ends in October 2021.

          • @MrFunSocks: I'm looking to upgrade my Pixel 3 for this reason. Might hold out a little longer for a better deal.

    • The same time as every year?

  • +1

Brings the price of the 4a 5g down to $639.20… and you don't have to have a Telstra mobile account > $55/month to redeem like the last deal.

  • Would jb hi-fi price match? I want to use amex deal and gift cards

    • They should. Most won't price match a Telstra deal though.

      • Yes they do and everything stacks.

        • My local one wouldn't.

      • Ive just tried, they told me they can't as the listed price is still $799 on the site and i can't seem to find this deal without typing in the linked address.

  • will pixel 4a have lifetime unlimited photo storage?

    • +4

Yes, but only in "high quality" aka compressed.

      • thank you.

      • +2

I think "high quality" is up to 16MP?
        Pixel 4a camera has 12MP.

So for 4a user, it shouldn't matter.
Or they still compress these photos?

        • They compress everything that you upload at "high quality". The 16MP thing is resizing as well. So if you upload a 12MP photo it will compress it but it will still be 12MP. If you upload a 48MP photo it will be compressed and resized down to 16MP.

    • Only 2XL I think or earlier models have lifetime full quality

  • Hopefully JB-HIFI match this deal

  • The recent S21 and Pixel 4 XL deals are way better in my opinion

  • Can you purchase if you don't own any pixel though??

    • Terms and conditions don't mention anything about owning a pixel to be eligible…

    • I think you have to trade the old one in to get the discount (so probably better off selling perhaps if you have one)

      • +1

It doesn't actually say anything about a trade.

I think this offer was originally intended to be exclusive to current Pixel owners, but there are no verification steps and it appears to be open to everyone.

        • great thanks

  • +3

    The promo worked for 4a.
    Thanks.

    • The delivery was quick. Got it early this morning.

  • Thanks OP, cancelled my Amazon UK order that has been taking forever ($509deal) and ordered 4a here instead.
