Was about to purchase some jerky the other day when i stumbled across this deal.

    Geronimo's Original Jerky is about $170 delivered for 1.5kg versus this guy's Safari Jerky for $70 (for 1KG + free 500g).

          Correct - for example, it is generally not a good idea to purchase instant coffee based on price alone.

          With this Jerky, you have no idea if it is as good as Geronimo, or even if it is edible. I'm not saying that it's bad (never tried it) but simply that when you "compare" you need to compare apples with apples.

          What do you suspect here? That's it's not made of actual beef, but of whatever the merchant could scrape up off of the road?

    I have tried both and they are both great products. I think Jims is trying to raise it's profile. I am lucky to live in SE Qld where they both get made. Trouble is online is cheaper than the shops most times, but in the shop you tend to buy more.

    I've tried Jim's Jerky before in a free sample I asked for and during food shows (Easter Show I think?).

    Its not bad. The one thing I will say though is that some of the spices are large. I would eat jerky and there would be 4 or 5 whole black peppercorns on it (think it was Safari flavour). I ended up spending a few seconds ripping off all these oversized seasonings on each piece. Jerky is a bit dry but I like dry jerky so it was fine. Chilli wasn't very chilli though, needed a lot more kick imo.

    That might sound like a beating, but overall, would say the jerky is cheap and was of decent quality and not too salty. It was meaty (from memory) but neither too much or too little. I have not tried their jerky for at least a year though, so memory could be failing me. I will probably try it again with this offer :)

      Airtight container in the cupboard. Don't freeze or refrigerate it!

      I don't know about Jim's, but my Geronimo jerky usually lasts at least a couple of months this way…well, it does if it doesn't get eaten first! ;)

      The WHOLE idea of dried meat is that it basically lasts "forever" without refrigeration. That is why our ancestors made the stuff in the first place.

      It should be OK for many months - the most important thing is to maintain the moisture content. Let it dry out and it will get tougher. Get too moist, and bacteria or mould may start to grow.

    sorry team, i have got a 500g of chili, it is delicious, quite spicy which is rare i find..

    I'm a regular at Jim's and I think its quite good jerky though some batch of he's chilli flavour are very salty but lately it's been good. I do prefer the peri peri over the chilli flavour i think it's a tad spicier. Over all good jerky

    I bought some Geronimo jerky recently and loved it. I'd been waiting for them to put a another good offer but this seems to good to pass up.

  • Trying to choose between the Beef Biltong Shredded and Beef Jerky. Does anyone know if it is just a matter of preference for the 2 types? Thinking to get 500g Biltong Shredded plus 400g Drywors, or 1 kg of Beef Jerky.

    Edited to add: I just read this from their site, so will likely go the Jerky way.

    you got to check out those drywors, i bought some whilst in handorf sa. They are so light/dry , like paper light etc, but really interestingly tasty…

    • Wish I could. Not in overnight postage range though. Also not a butcher for that matter. :)

      • I reckon the drywors will be ok posted (I'm ordering some eitherway), they are really dry and I wouldn't think they'd need refrigiration. i have a feeling it's only those 'boerwewors' that they wouldn't send.

          Please be very careful of salmonella, especially ordering at this time of year. The reason jerky stores so successfully without refrigeration (apart from being dry) is that it is very lean. Sausages (which drywors is) by their very nature contain fat - they won't work without it.

    big fan of jims jerky. They use to have stands in garden city and carindale where they would shred the jerky on the spot but due to OHS apparently they could only do bags of jerky from then on.

    Whenever I go chermside I make a point to buy a bag.

  • $70 a kg is not a bad price - it would cost you that to make yourself unless you got the meat dirt cheap. Free post makes it a bargain.

    Ordered 1kg of BBQ jerky - I'd imagine they'd be manually adding the 500g packs to orders from today and tomorrow - for a small company automating this as a one off wouldn't be worth it.

    Sensational deal - free shipping and $35 value for ordering over $50 of gear. Thats the best jerky deal I've seen for a long time.

    It actually works out marginally better to buy the smaller packs this weekend.

    If you buy the 1kg for $70, you get 1.5 kgs (1500g) delivered (with the bonus 500g) for $70, which works out to 21.43 grams per dollar.

    If you buy the 500g + 90g ($40 + $10 to qualify for the minimum $50 spend) you'll get 1090g delivered for $50, which works out to 21.8 grams per dollar - a massive 0.37g per $ bonus!

      If you're in shipping range and like biltong go for 5x144g packets, which works out cheaper per kg.
      $50 for 720g of biltong plus the 500g freebie =1.220kg.

      Going to the effort to calculate the optimum package buying pattern, all for slightly more than an additional tablespoon of jerky.

    Just place a $50 order and received the confirmation email, no mention of the freebie, replied to the email for further info, they supply a phone number on the email, if I do not get an email response in a few hours I will give them a call.

    funnily enough I just purchased a dehydrator to make my own. This is a good deal however!

      $70 for 1.5kg translates to ~$47 per kg.

      With jerky you're generally looking at about a 1:3 dried:fresh weight ratio. Which means about 4.5kg of beef is required.

      So even ignoring the cost of shipping, flavouring, dehydrating, packaging and the labour involved, this is beef at $10/kg.

      Is the beef you're going to be dehydrating less than that? :P

    I believe biltong2go.com.au works out being cheaper for biltong if you buy in 500g or 1kg packets. It's also absolutely delicious.

  • Hmmm I just ordered the 5 x 144gram stealth buy and came to 'view orders' and says my order totalled $100 despite before clicking the button it only having $50, seems to have initially billed my credit card also for the $100. Bit worried. It does seem to have added 5 x various 90gram bags of Jerky though so maybe it is doing the calculation on the 'shipped order' in some weird way and will refund the $50. Kinda don't want to do the 2nd sneaky buy now in case i end up with $200 bucks in dried meat and a refund headache.

    Anyone else had this occur?

    • Their website is not the most intuitive.

      When I ordered I noticed that if you click the 'buy' on the product on the group page it puts it in your cart by stealth but then directs you to an individual product page with another 'buy' button, if you hit this you get a second identical item in your cart!

      It seems you've ordered double fluffyd1, email them pronto & ask for a partial cancellation or refund.

    Got mine this morning too, delivered by express post. But only got 490 gram free instead of 500 gram- 2x200 gram and 1x90 gram. They still owe me 10 gram, LOL

  • I've never tasted jerky before except the chinese ones. Are they supposed to be super tough and rubbery? I felt as if I am chewing piri2 flavoured tires.

    • To be honest I don't know what it's supposed to be. I don't like it tough and rubbery which is basically the kind of Jerky this is. Not giving input as to whether it's 'normal' or not but definately prefer the competitions or home made :P

      Yeah, the Chinese ones (Niu Rou Gan) tend to be more dry & crumbly IME, most of the good jerky I've had is fairly chewy & much more robust.

    Yeh I can confirm the 2x200g + 90g freebie packs. Its all good, since that means with your original flavour you have all of them. Its dry and tough but its fine after a few secs. Man up and salivate!

    What flavor did they send for the free 500g? Was it just the same flavour as one you already ordered or what?

        Just got my jerky and they gave me 2x200g + 90g of three different flavors that I didn't already have for the 500g free.

        Just tried all the flavors and am pretty disappointed with the taste. Like the guy above said, all you can taste is plastic like flavors in the jerky. Nowhere near as good as Geronimo jerky.

    Got mine today.
    I ordered on Sat 2:15pm and was delivered yesterday 9.15am (but I was at work), that's freakishly quick!
    Unlike Geronimo's 3 weeks delivery not including Sat n Sundays.

    That's 67 hrs = 2 days and 19 hrs. Business days wise, its just a day and 9 hrs hah!
    Tell you what dudes, the duder at Jim's must have got some awesome duderism. Yeah, well. The dude abides!

    1kg bag of Chilli, 200g bag of BBQ, 200g of safari, and 90g of garlic. They taste better than Geronimo's as they're more moist.

    I see a lot of ex-Geronimo customer here, if you know what had happened to us (not them, i mean, who cares about them).

    One thing Im curious about, Geronimo's jerky has 71g of protein out of a 100g serving, whereas Jim's has on average 40.8g of protein. Could that be the moist level that affected the protein content? To my understanding, more moist = more water content = lesser protein content. Drier meat = less water = packed with more protein?

    At the risk of being negged for my comments, I'm still waiting for my order and while 10g less may seem trivial, nether the less its pretty poor performance to substitute a promotion for a lower weight of products when they sell 500g products across their range. They need to work on their PPPPPP promotion model.

    I only ordered biltong so will be interesting to see what i get (hopefully today).

      I just weighed my 90g bag and it was actually 110g. Maybe they put more in them for this promotion?

      • Did you weigh the contents only or with the bag? It makes sense to put more in then the published weight as a Company doesn't want to get caught with underweight products. Will check it myself when it arrives.

        I'm getting nervous about mine arriving today - ordered Saturday and going to 4000. Order status marked it as sent Monday.

        Edit: Well, I just walked out to the reception and there was my order. Received a 500g Chilli Jerky (Requested in email 500g of Peri Peri or Chilli - guess they wanted me to try the jerky). Interestingly - the EParcel sticker on the bag notes the weight as 1.40KG.

    I received my order and I'm sorry but I have to say its actually really quite pathetic that ANYONE could have the hide to complain about being 'shortchanged 10 grams' in what they received.

    I mean I know we all like a good deal here but really thats pretty poor.

    So you are saying that you'd rather have received a single 500g bag of ONE other flavour instead of being given three different flavours but a whole 10 grams less? (this is what happened to me 1kg BBQ bought and got 200g x Garlic + Safari and 90g Chilli).

    If you sincerely do feel hard done by I'm AMAZED as I actually think this is fantastic - as you get to try 3 different flavours instead of just one - PLUS the retail price of the 2 x 200g bags + 1 x 90g bag is considerably MORE than 1 x 500g bag! So on a RRP level you're doing much better.

    So for the sake of 10g I think the vast majority of people would feel this isn't so bad.

    Perhaps Jim's Jerky should have enclosed a mass produced leaflet explaining the 3 x flavours less 10g and hoping people were happy with this….so in hindsight perhaps this small touch would have been nic. But overall it was a cracking deal and I actually thought 3 bonus flavours instead of 1 was a good thing.

    I also had all my packages weigh several % over their designated weight - and this difference was definitely more than the packaging's weight….so I'm sure I actually got the full 500g anyway.

    Sorry to hear you feel hard done by as it was a fantastic deal and much credit to Jim's for getting SOOOOOO many orders out so rapidly. Very impressive.

    PS. The jerky is very good, great texture and meat flavour - the added flavours are perhaps not quite as prominant as I'd like but otherwise quite an enjoyable product.

      When a business advertise they are going to do something, then that is what they should do - period. Especially when it is used to induce people to place an order. I think your "hindsight" comment is right - if they intended to send out 2 x 200g bags + 1 x 90g bag out, then they could just have easily specified that. As I said, they need to work on their PPPPPP promotion model!

      How does one "weigh" percentages? Sounds like you are just mouthing off…

        Lets just say:
        An extra gram (91g) out of the 90g jerky is 1.11% more.
        3 grams out of the 200g jerky (203g) is 1.5% more.
        205g, 5g out of the other 200g jerky, that's another 2.5% more.

        Do the math mate.

    The 500g Chilli was my freebie. (Kind of wish I asked for 3 flavours like you guys).

    Anyway, I am not blown away by the flavour but that just might be jerky all together.

    I'm sure I've had jerky years ago and it was thinner and I loved it but found the price for amount expensive.

    The use by date is 16 July 2012 and 20 June 2012. How bout you guys? I don't think I can get through 1.5kgs in 5-6 months.

      Don't count on it - I weighed one out of packet of Biltong on electronic scales so far at 143g for a 144g packet (weighed several times to check variation). Now before Nikko gets into a whirl over a simple statement and negs me - I would write off that 1g as a calibration/error etc. I do however dispute his claim that "packages weigh several % over their designated weight" - so feel free to neg me on that! ;)

      • Have you guys ever weighed anything you buy from the supermarkets? They're allowed a nominal +/- %'age tolerance of the listed weight.

        • There are a number of factors to determine what is a tolerable deficiency depending on which method of measuremnt is used. The "%" you are referring to is not greater than 5% but is dependent on ratio etc of sample. The legislation you want to refer to is the National Measurement Act

          The point I was making was to refute Nikko's claim that ALL "packages weigh several % over their designated weight" and not to make a point about a possible 1g difference in nett weight. Nikko's statement was quite broad and unqualified which I suspect was intended to be so.

  • Also in regards to weight. If you don't have a scale (like me!) The Auspost parcel has the weight on it, you just have to account for the paper parcel and plastic wrappings… and piece of paper receipt.

    Mine says 1.64kg

  • I just received my 2 orders (I ordered again after reconsidering that I might need more jerky before the next special!).

    The orders were 1kg Peri Peri with free 200g BBQ, 200g Garlic and 90g Peri Peri; and 1kg Safari with free 500g BBQ.

    In my experience this is preferable jerky to Geronimo - my first order with Geronimo was delicious and moist, the second as tasty but drier, and the third order was very dry, chewy and tough.

    Geronimo seems to have a stronger flavour to their jerky - my taste buds tell me they use more soy sauce and salt than Jims, but I prefer Jims - a milder flavour, delicious taste and much easier to eat - theirs is also cut into ready to eat 1/2" strips.

    Sorry Geronimo, but I've moved on.

  • I ordered a bunch of Biltong and received an email that mine won't be shipped til Monday. Reason for this is I'm in WA, and it would have sat in the AusPost warehouse over the entire weekend due to the national holiday. Apparently they also package your goods and wait overnight to ensure the seal stays intact before shipping across the entire country. I'm sure they're incredibly busy with all their OzBargain orders and I am more than happy to wait if it means everything arrives fresh :)

    Kudos to them for forward thinking and good communication with customers.

  • i got mine yesterday morning, i ordered safari and biltong, its the best! however they sent me 200gm chilli 90gm peri peri and 200gm bbq. though i would like bbq i dont like chilli or peri peri. would anyone like to swap me for any of the other not hot flavours?
