Domestic One Way Flight from Sydney to Newcastle

Hi all

I am picking up my car at Newcastle on Friday. Looking to see if I can save some time by flying up one way to Newcastle. I had a search of some of the websites and it's quite expensive. Circa $500 per person. If I check these websites again say on Friday morning, would it be heavily discounted??

Never done this before so reaching out for some guidance.

Cheers

Which site are you using? Pelican Airlines seems to be the only airline flying direct between Sydney and Newcastle, and their tickets are going for $72 on Friday (but they depart at night)

In any case, I can't imagine flying to be that much faster than a ~3 hr train trip (assuming no train disruptions by then) which should cost you less than $7 on Opal

  • Thanks. Yeah seen the pelican one. Shame it's after hours. Need one before 12pm so can drive back down for school pick up. Thinking we will just drive up to newcastle

    • Yea if that's the case then I reckon driving or train is your only option. No good flight options (even if cost is not an object), and nope I can't imagine prices dropping a heap by Friday!

Look at return flights too. Sometimes cheaper than one way. Just do a no show for the return leg ;)

    • Paging Mr reckless. Please present to gate 6 for an immediate boarding.

Nope won't happen…. If you never check in for the return leg you are marked as a no show once check in closes, so no paging or holding up the plane.

It's a common 'trick' to do in EU as one way flights always seem to cost more than return flights. So you book a return, you use the first leg, fail to check in for the return leg and save!

Um, have you heard of the train? Unless you live right next to Mascot I can't imagine it being much faster and far more expensive to fly.

They don’t call it the Shitkansen for nothing …

Also, the trains have gone to shit this week

      • :D

  • years ago I did this flight, on Qantas I think and they served me orange juice in a probably 200ml cup. And I hadn't finished my last sip before the plane started to land.

Catch the train up. It’s pretty quiet coming up this direction in the morning as most of the passenger movements are into Sydney. And it will be about $15, not $500

It will take about the same amount of time, because the flight you will have to get there early, wait around, get boarded, taxi out, fly up, land, taxi in, get off the plane and then get a taxi/bus into Newcastle unless they are going to meet you at the airport with the car.

  • Take a train to Newcastle Thursday night and stay in a hotel for 1 night.

  • An Uber would be cheaper than that flight… it's like $350.

Also bear in mind, Newcastle airport is actually in an area called Williamstown which is about 30km from Newcastle itself. Have a look to see how far it is from the suburb you are going to.

If you compare the total time from your door in Sydney to the Newcastle CBD you will find that they are both comparable as you need to get to the Sydney airport and you have to get there so you do not miss the flight after getting through to the gate with your e-ticket (as you only need a backpack).

Then at the RAF base you will need to get back into Newcastle.

The train is not too bad, so long as you catch an express type train otherwise it will take an hour more.

    • The brits have a military base in Newcastle??? oO

Go driving (if possible) it's usually cheap and also a lot convenient too, like you can go anywhere whenever etc. But be mindful of all the toll roads, ferries, etc. from the GREEDY GOV.

Also by driving it costs same money regardless of how many ever people too, so you can bring any friends etc. or ask if anyone wanted to go, split some fare of fuel and all good.

Thanks all. Just going to drive up in a car. That way I can fart whenever I feel like

    • What will you do with your car when you get there? Won't you have two cars to bring back to Sydney?

      • Next post…

I'm stuck in Newcastle with 2 cars. How do I get them both to Sydney?

Or… I rear ended my own car while my friend was driving it back from Newcastle, who is at fault?

  • Use a one way car rental ?
