  • hmm…same price as on the lenovo edu store.

Is this a good alternative to the macbook m1 air? I need about 7 hours battery life and to be used for normal stuff. I like the m1, but don't really like the OSX as much, since I'm so used to windows.

    • -3

Don't think twice and go with M1 air. I was on the hunt for brand new windows laptop, tried latest XPS and ThinkPad but again disappointed with temps, noisy fans, cpu performance because of temps, noise they make, not to mention battery (it's just not acceptable in any case scenario). Both laptops sold. And I was like, hang on a sec so we're in 2022 and these laptops works like 15 years ago and nothing has really changed but price. So I decided to go with M1 Air for a very first exprience with Apple and I was blown away with arm cpu architecture since day one. Trust me, you will never look back. Battery lasts forever, never heats up, plugged in or unplagged it always works the same, it's pure magic compare to any windows laptop.

      • +5

If you pay Mac prices for a similarly performing Windows laptop, you'll get low temps and long battery. But few are prepared to do that.

        • -8

But none are M1 low temp and long battery…… and definitely none is fanless like an M1 Air.

          • +10

@dyziplen: You missed the entire point. It's $1000 more for the same RAM and SSD storage. Windows laptops that are $1000 more will perform better than this Windows laptop.

And yes, few people seem willing to spend $2.2k on a Windows laptop me included.

and definitely none is fanless like an M1 Air.

Are* and wrong. You just are unlikely to find either in this price range (Mac or Windows)

            • @decc0: Nah my xps 13 sucks compared to my partner's MacBook. Bullshit battery drain (in use and especially standby). Screen is way nicer on a MacBook too

              • +1

@polol: Probably going to get crucified for saying this but the XPS lineup is likely the most overhyped Windows laptop. Not to mention it's still a Dell which in my experience haven't had the greatest track record.

Asus and Lenovo will be a different story. Even HP's "premium" lineup will be better

                • @decc0: I've had a couple of Dell laptops now, with the last one of them an XPS. Won't be buying Dell again…

    • +2

If you need to use 3rd party Windows or Linux applications stick with a Windows PC laptop. You also need to consider any 3rd party hardware compatibility issues. Whilst the M1 is good, you will mainly benefit if you are happy with an OS X environment and compatible hardware.

The laptop in this deal will provide about 10 or 11 hrs usage depending on the application you use, at medium brightness.

You are also getting a 2k resolution IPS touch screen vs a non touch display on the M1.

If you look at Passmark the AMD Ryzen 7 5800u
has good performance vs the M1.

      https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-5800U-vs-Ap…

      5800u scores 18860
      M1 scores just over 15000

  • +1

    I have M1 Air 8GB for $1439 with free AirPods 2 and the famous Lenovo S540 R7 16GB for $1106.
M1 better keyboard, battery and for daily use.
Lenovo is only good for typical window work.
On M1 hard to download and run third-party stuff.

  • +3

Don't get me wrong, M1 Air is a great little machine for the price but it's far too limited for my liking compared to this Lenovo laptop. It has a better keyboard and battery life, but the Lenovo has a touchscreen, human presence detection and IR camera for face login, so much more ports and an SD card reader and a much more flexible OS with waaaay better application compatibility.

  • This'd be great for me if the RAM weren't soldered. I don't think there's anything similar to this with upgradable RAM though.

    • +2

I reckon if 16GB RAM is not enough (including upgradable slots) then your price range would need to be a lot higher than $1300.

      • +2

For upgradable ram and larger than 16GB. They would be looking at gaming laptops which usually start well north of $2k to start with.

I might check this out later today as it ticks a lot of boxes.

Qhd screen, touch, 300 nits, latest r7 cpu and 16GB of ram.

Was looking at the hp pavilion aero for $1049
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/685339

But for $250 more you get a better cpu, double ram and bigger screen of the lenovo i think is worth it.

        • Yeah this laptop hits a pretty sweet spot in terms of size, weight and specs. I was seriously considering the recent Harvey Norman deal for the same laptop with the 6 core Ryzen 5 processor but this deal with the 8 core Ryzen 7 processor for an extra $100 odd seems much better.

          • @alwaysupforabargain: For $100 odd more definitely. And bonus points for not giving that grub Gerry any money.

          • +3

@alwaysupforabargain: And don't forget the 5% (or even more if you re lucky) JB Gift Cards AND they are currently running a promo with Norton where if you install Norton 60 Day trial on it, they will send you $40 JB Gift Cards in 1-2 week time after which you can unisntall Norton. You cna use the gift cars (with no expiry date) on whatever you fancy. I grabbed this just now in Castle Towers for 1290 and planning to use the $40 gift card to buy a wireless KB & Mouse.
            $1290-5%=$1225.5 - $40 = $1185 for this spec is like crazy good.

            • @Rimas: Thats for that. Installing this to claim gift card then factory resetting the laptop once gift card is obtained.

              • @xoom: I installed on a Virtual Box VM :D

                • +1

@Rimas: I could do that also. Fair point. Might do that also.

        • +1

They would be looking at gaming laptops which usually start well north of $2k to start with.

They're also bulkier and have dedicated GPUs which aren't of interest to me. The closest I've seen that's roughly in this price range is a Lenovo L14, but it's a worse machine in every way except that it has a pair of SODIMM sockets. I think you guys have confirmed for me that I either need to compromise on RAM, or pay twice as much.

          • +1

@atj: At this price point theres always going to be a compromise. Just depends on what are willing to compromise on.

  • What are thoughts in comparison with this with 20% off $1359?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Yoga-Slim-7-Pro-AMD-Ryzen…

    • Cpu comparison 5800u is a bit faster.

      https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/amd-ryzen-7-5800u-vs-a…

Different screen size. So up to you if think the $60 difference is worth it.

    • The 5600H is a 6 core 45W TDP CPU mainly designed for gaming laptops. If you want better battery life get the laptop with the 5800U, 8 core CPU, which has a TDP of 15W.

  • Have anyone further negotiated price in store?

    • +1

You can try worse they can say is no.

    • +1

They gave me 9 bucks off but I'm a terrible negotiator.

      • Nothing further for me but picked up anyway

        • Same but picked it up also. Setting it up tonight.

I did see on the receipt something about the norton promo.

          • @xoom: Yeah follow those instructions and you will get 2x$20 JB gift cards in 2-3 weeks time

            • @Rimas: Will be setting this up on my windows 7 vm.

  • Is it actually a touch screen? Was it there on the site before, and JB have removed mention of it?

    Touchscreen
    False

It's an option on the Lenovo site.

    • +2

It's a mistake on JB site. I got the unit today and it is touchscreen

      • Thanks for confirming.

Is the screen matte or glossy? They didnt have this model on display at jbhifi i went to. My guess is its matte

        • It's glossy

          • +1

@Rimas: Shame that but not the end of the world.

            • @xoom: I prefer glossy as it's more colour accurate but not so great for outdoors. The same model's non touch panel is matte but JB does not sell that

              • @Rimas: Fair enough. Yeah would suck using outdoors.

But a trade off i guess. Touch screen is useful to me.

                • @xoom: does it do usb-c PD and display port? I want to hook up a TB4 hub and a 4K screen to it.
reviews says no, but user comments say yes…depends on model maybe?

                  https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-IdeaPad-5-Pro-14-16-10-…

                  • @DvD: Mine is still in the box. But once i return tonight from jbhifi to get the refund of the price difference.

It will be one of the things i will do. Is connect it to my 4k portable monitor via usb c.

                    • @xoom: refund ? due to the 5%?

                      • @DvD: Yeah the afterpay discount.

                        • @xoom: cheers mate, will wait for your updates

                          • +1

@DvD: Success on getting the price difference refund.

How i did it. Went there. Claimed price difference of laptop.

Checkout staff see laptop same price. $1299.

You show them jbhifi website cart with laptop and afterpay coupon code added. And priced at $1234.05

Checkout staff will call their manager to confirm. Manager approves. And they refund the difference. I paid cash so my refund was there and then. For gift card or bank card purchases theres likely a few days wait.

Last thing they reissue you an updated receipt and thats it.

As for diplay over usb c.

I plugged my 4k portable monitor on either usb c port. And both displayed an image.

Weird its not turning on from having just booted and the portable monitor is plugged in to the laptop though. Maybe its no getting enough power from having just booted. Need to test it more.

                            • @xoom: thanks mate - will go and check it out tomorrow and get one.

                              • @DvD: Get it. You wont regret purchasing it.

Im liking this new laptop already.

                                • @xoom: ordered online and picked up 40mins later.
confirmed it worked on a TB dock I have, running a 4k @60hz and another 1080p.

I don't see this Norton promo on the invoice, can you share that part of the details?

                                  • +1

@DvD: Its a second piece of paper aside from your receipt.

                            • @xoom: I would raise a support ticket with Lenovo to see what their response it. Who knows, it might be something they can fix in the next BIOS update but they should know about it to fix it so please do it.

                  • @DvD: It does but 4k refresh rate is 60 hz apparently so be mindful of that

      • Thanks, I'm tempted… a second M.2 2280 slot would have been nice.

Overall, it looks good in this review.

        • Yeah that would have been nice but cant have it all.

        • This review is good but it's mistaken by saying it does not have DisplayPort because it does.

          • @Rimas: Yeah multiple comments down the bottom refute it too, as do the specs directly from Lenovo.

Anyone had a good play with it this evening? Care to give a mini review if so?

            • +2

@jwh: I ran it for a few hours today. It's a great device. Very snappy and smooth. Runs very cool compared to my last laptop. I did not hear the fan kick in at all. Battery went to 60 percent after 2.5 hours usage, so I reckon it can last at least 7-8 hours doing web browsing with mid brightness. Very happy with it overall

              • +1

@Rimas: Quite happy with as well so far (touch screen was bonus as it did not say on JB's website)

              • @Rimas: Hey OP. You might want to mention. This us even cheaper with the AFTERPAY5 coupon code.

            • @jwh: Setting up the one i bought.

Design is good but man this thing got sharp edges. Not sharp enough to cut you but if your hand is resting just at any edge surface. It digs in.

Opening one handed yeah that seem to fail for me but no biggie.

Screen is great. Nice and bright. Will test outside tomorrow to see how bad the glare is.

Display over usb c sort of works. What i mean by that is. I got i portable monitor with usb c.

Once laptop is powered and you plug the usb c cable from the monitor to the laptop. It starts working. But if already plugged in. Portable monitor wont turn on as laptop boots. Works fine on my yoga x1. So its not the monitor thats the issue here.

Keyboard has less key travel but still adequate.
Trackpad is ok. Clicky and feedback is nice.

              Speakers though loud lacks bass.

As for the webcam. Its will do for them zoom calls.

          • @Rimas: I can confirm it does.

Either usb c port can display an image.

Only thing is from having just booted. My portable screen wont turn on as the laptop boots. I tested same thing with my x1 yoga and portable screen works as laptop boots. So its not the portable screen with the issue.

Also if you close the lid on the laptop. The portable screen goes off and wont turn back on if you open the laptop again. Only way to bring portable screen back up is unplug usb c cable and replug.

            • @xoom: Go to windows power settings and change the "what happens when the lid is closed" to "nothing".

              • @Rimas: That did the trick. Thanks.

      • Could you confirm that the hinge doesn't open all the way? So even if it is touch screen we cant really use it as tablet? Thanks

  • Damn. Could have saved a further 5% with afterpay code.

    AFTERPAY5

    • you can go in and get the difference refunded.

      • Yeah already did that.

  • +1

Picked one up on Sunday. First one was DOA with a dim backlight in the corner and screen flicker. They happily swapped it for another.
Nice and quick machine, with a Samsung NVME. Fairly quiet, but I haven't really put it under load. Build quality seems good, display quality is terrific and is touch screen and trackpad is reasonable.
Came with a copy of Office 365 Personal, which I have no use for.

  • Picked one up for the missus actually saw this deal after i bought it as was looking at the Ryzen 5 5600U model but it was more expensive haha. Ended up getting this its quite a beast for the money and latest zen 3 cpu

    • Dont forget the $40 jbhifi gift card promo with norton 360.

I looked around for the r7 5800u and the jbhifi i went to only had the r5 5600u model which was more expensive funny enough. Asked the staff and they got one from the store room.

I agree its a beast of a laptop for the price.

      • i signed up but it doesn't want to install the thing but let me claim it lets see how we go.

      • Guys, do not forget to cancel your Norton Subscription as soon as you get the Gift Cards. They have your Credit Card number and thet can charge you for an entire year if you don't cancel.

        • +1

Yeah. Im waiting on that gift card. As soon as i get it. Cancelling my subscription.

        • Just got the jb hifi gift card.

Couldn't find how to cancel. Went to chat and they cancelled my subscription.

To those cancelling their subscription. Its quicker to go through the chat. They email you to say your subscription is cancelled to confirmed.

  • Grabbed this over the weekend. Did a fresh install of windows 11 and dual booting ubuntu and it's running perfectly, really happy with it so far.

    • the windows 11 install was surprisingly light weight only had to uninstall a couple of things hows the standby drain with a fresh install?

      • Is there any kind of official way to measure that? I haven't really been paying attention, I just plug it in when the battery is looking low.

        • Same. Didnt pay attention on when i was setting up my one.

          • @xoom: I looked into it a bit more and it uses modern standby and then goes into hibernation after some time, i did see that the device is in conencted mode so changed it to hybrid standby not connected with a powercfg command

  • What is the weight of the laptop?

    • I cant find anything written on the box other than 2.27kg but thats including the box.

      1.7kg with power pack
      1.3kg just the laptop.

      https://youtu.be/2hDpWtVRRZA

      • Thanks xoom. I'm toss between this or flex5

        • Flex5 is TN display is not it?

  • +1

Thanks OP, purchased one today after viewing a similar display model.

    • +1

Congratulations. I can easily call it the best budget laptop out there. Love it.

  • +2

92JBFIVEOFF brings this down to $1234.

    https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/IdeaPad/IdeaPad_5_P…

    • Thanks. Updated the deal

  • Just picked one up today. I'm getting this rattling sound when I use the trackpad, otherwise it's great. Anyone else getting this issue?

    • Mine is fine. Rattling as in being loose?

      • Yes like a little bit of give when you slide your finger across so it makes a sound. Functionally fine but a bit annoying. Must just be the unit I got.

        • Yeah return it. It should not be like that
