  • Does Jobkeeper mean they are free for all?

    • +4

No, once you receive the handout laptop, if Gerry asks you to return it, you can send him back the box and manuals

  • It is listed in the description, but buyers should be wary of Windows 11 Home in S mode.

"Allows only apps from Microsoft Store, and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing." Microsoft Support

can switch out of S mode into full Win 11 on a few clicks for free , just like Win 10 ?

      • Yeah you still can, though with that 4GB of RAM multi-tasking will struggle. I guess that's why Acer ships with it S mode out of the box.

      • +1

        yes you can

delete windows and use linux. Window runs badly with that 4GB yikes.

    • I have Windows 11 Home.. i can install any app/program i want and have with zero issues.. 32bit old stuff from 1990's and 2000's.. i think its only the "S mode"

  • Hmm. This could be decent with a ram upgrade to 12GB and fresh install of windows/linux?

if its like the Ryzen equivalent, it will have a spare RAM slot and a 2.5" bay and you can upgrade the NVME SSD if you want

On the Ryzen I added another 8GB stick which made is 12GB however 2GB went to graphics card (no way to alter) and 10GB was seen by WIN11

How do people make 4gb usable? Need to set up a laptop for my 5yo to do readingeggs and nothing else. Have an older laptop with 4gb and its a bit slow to react to her touchscreen use

    • -1

      they dont

everyone with a clue with purchase an 8gb stick to make it usable

or pay someone to install it for you

HN ask for a poverty build so you cant cross shop at JB etc.

      • I get you, but not helpful.

It's an old laptop i want to repurpose because all she needs is readingeggs and a touchscreen. Frankly the solution could involve installing windows xp if only there were drivers.. (The laptop isn't that old) or Windows starter or something.. Whatever's going to stop that ram usage. There aren't any free ram slots. I do have a retail win 7 I'm not using I suppose i should try that.

    • don't use chrome as the browser, each tab you open takes up memory and after your child has done to 30 web sites and not closed ….. use Edge, uses less memory …..we have 8GB laptops and after we removed chrome and used edge our memory problems were solved ….

btw. this unit uses the same motherboard family that goes back before covid, wayyy back

so it has type c but it wont charge off type c, ie. gen 1

  • Saw this one in HN yesterday . plastic shell , no type c .

can you update the memory without void warranty ?

TFT LCD EEEEWWWWWW i would avoid this like the plague

    • Your link is for an Acer Aspire 5, this is an Aspire 3.

HN link says the model number is A315-58-36FN which has an IPS LCD according to this link.

    • What's wrong with TFT LCD? That's what all screens are, are they not?

      • TFT doesn't look good unless you are square on when viewing, IPS looks clearer from angles ….

        • You're thinking of TN. Not the same as TFT.

  • Weird some one neg this deal.
This definitely the best price on specification.
At this price you can only get a Celeron CPU 128G SSD etc

With 11 gen I3 1115G4, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Full HD, Free ram slot for upgrade, Free HDD slot for upgrade and under $500!!!
    This is an unbeatable deal!!
