Minecraft Java on iMac Help

Hey everyone
I own a older iMac late 2013 and I just installed a trail version of Minecraft Java for my daughter to play on it.

Can anyone recommend what video settings to use as the game starts to lag or frame rate drops and it becomes jerky to play now and then. I only installed the trial version as I didn’t wanna spend the $$ if the game wasn’t going to run well.

The iMac we are using is the following -

Apple iMac 27"
3.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4 GB

Hope someone can help me out

Thanks

You can improve performance by setting everything on low and making the window smaller if playing on windowed mode, but you can squeeze more performance out of it by using optimisation mods like Optifine. https://www.optifine.net/home

I haven't touched minecraft in like… 5 years so I'm not sure if there are better solutions than Optifine. Sodium is also recommended by the Wiki

    • Yer this is the first time for me so I have no idea what I’m doing, I just noticed it was running not that great

I’m wondering if bedrock would run better?

      • From memory, Bedrock isn't available on Mac (anyone correct me if I'm wrong).

Bedrock does run better than Java, yes. My ~$500 craptop struggles to run Java but runs Bedrock off the Microsoft Store completely fine.

Optifine did help me run the Java edition quite a bit better, look into it if you haven't already. Turn down all your graphics settings first before testing Optifine. Turn down your resolution to 720p or something to keep it 16:9 and see how it runs. Just trial and error, if your game runs more than fine on the lowest settings try boosting some to retain some graphical fidelity.

      • Apparently only the new Macs with Apple's ARM chips are supported for Bedrock.
