While shopping for a pressure washer I came across this deal where you can get 2000 bonus Flybuys points with a $50 and above spend on these selected gift cards at Coles when you swipe your Flybuys card at checkout. Valid on The Restaurant Choice, Gourmet Traveller, Ultimate Eats and Celebration Gift Cards.

Celebration gift cards can now be swapped for Officeworks, Barbeques Galore, City Beach, Cotton On, H&M, JD Sports, Luxury Escapes, T2 and The Iconic.

Note: Physical The Restaurant Choice Gift Card can only be used at specific establishments any establishment with certain Merchant Category Codes (MCC).       I’ve noticed clause 3 of the Restaurant Choice physical gift card’s terms and conditions now says:

      This Card is an EFTPOS prepaid gift card that can be used to purchase food and beverages at any restaurant, café, bar or fast-food establishment (that falls into a merchant category detailed in Clause 2.5) within Australia that accepts EFTPOS for payment (an "Accepted Merchant”). Cards cannot be used at any merchant that is not an Accepted Merchant (including those described in Clause 2.6).

Now it's clause 2.1 and says: "Each gift card is a physical stored value card (“Gift Card”) and issued for use as payment (up to the value stored on the Gift Card and prior to the expiry date of the Gift Card) at any restaurant, café, bar or fast food establishment (that falls into a merchant category detailed in Clause 2.5) within Australia that accepts EFTPOS (for physical Gift Cards) or Visa (for Digital eGift Cards) for payment (an “Accepted Merchant”)".

      Hi Clear, Rep's comment about the physical Restaurant Choice gift card was from 2-Dec-2022 and it appears the Terms and Conditions have now been updated for the physical card to be the same as the electronic card. See comment from WookieMonster.

          Yes, I meant to reply to RichardL's comment as that is the one that Clear used to update the original post, but I think that info is wrong anyway, so I am asking Clear to update with the latest Terms, which say that even the physical Restaurant Choice' Gift Card can be used at any restaurant that accepts eftpos. I am just not sure whether the physical gift card can be saved to mobile wallet?

          FAQ section says it can but not sure if this is for the electronic gift card only?:
          "Restaurant Gift Cards can be added to your Apple, Samsung, or Google mobile wallet.
          To add your Restaurant Choice Gift Card to your mobile wallet please download the My Prepaid Centre app from the Google Play or Apple App store and follow the prompts."

      I bought a couple of physical 'The Restaurant Choice' cards in September 2022, at which time they were restricted to specific participating restaurants. An error on my part which I was quite annoyed that I'd done.

      I tried using one of these cards today at a non-participating restaurant and this was successful.

      Luckily it seems that they are now usable in any restaurant/cafe with the correct merchant category, and that it is a backdated change applying to previously purchased physical cards.

    FYI you do not have to “swap” a Celebration gift card in order to use it at some participating retailers.

    • Some participating retailers accept it in their physical stores.

    • Some participating retailers accept it on their online stores.

    • Some participating retailers allow you to exchange part or the full balance of the gift card for the retailer’s own digital gift card via Blackhawk Network.

    Last time I checked (which was before Christmas), you cannot exchange a Celebration gift card for an Officeworks gift card through Blackhawk Network themselves.

            The Celebration gift card page stupidly does not tell you whether a participating retailer accepts a Celebration gift card instore or online or appear on the exchange facility.

            However, considering that a Celebration gift card really is just a special type of Ultimate gift card that is only sold at Coles, I had a look at the Ultimate Home gift card and it mentions that Barbeques Galore accepts Ultimate gift cards in their physical stores and their online store, and also appears on the exchange facility. That means that Barbeques Galore should accept Celebration gift cards in their physical and their online store. It should also appear on the exchange facility, as I saw it there a few weeks ago.

      That's correct (plus you'd also get the base points, so an extra 250 points for 5 x $50 cards for a total of 10250 points).

      For those wondering, it seems there is no $50 denomination for the Celebration cards.

    For those who want to double dip with hsbc 2% cashback by split paying the balance, this didn’t work for me yesterday at coles clempton park self-serve checkout when buying Apple gift cards for 20x points. Gave an error when choosing split pay with card and staff had to fix, said it wasn’t allowed.

    Didn’t think in the moment to stop and go to a staff checkout to ask them to do it, does anyone know if they will? Can’t remember if coles self serve has always worked but it definitely has worked at woolies self serve for me in the past.

      You're late to the party, coles has been restricting split payment on giftcard purchases for years and doing so requires manual override from staff.

      The only type of split payments you can do at a Coles self checkout when purchasing gift cards is to pay in cash first, then pay the remaining amount owed on one card. You cannot specify the amount of cash you want to spend, so you would need to insert the exact amount of cash you want to spend.

      If you go to a Coles standard checkout (one operated by a dedicated staff member, including the ones with conveyor belts for people doing their massive grocery shops), you are able to do split payments when purchasing gift cards, but this is at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout and is reliant on the staff member knowing how to do split payments. I got stuck at a Coles standard checkout for nearly five minutes a few weeks ago, because the staff member did not actually know how to do split payments across two Coles gift cards and was trying to figure it out on the spot…

      Whilst we are talking about this topic:

      • You can do split payments at Woolworths and BIG W self checkouts when purchasing gift cards. (No idea about staff-assisted checkouts, but I presume you can do it there too.)

      • You cannot do split payments at any Kmart checkouts when purchasing gift cards. I discovered this the hard way and wasted ten minutes trying to do split payments at a self checkout and then at staff-assisted checkouts. (Yep, even staff are not allowed to do split payments at staff-operated checkouts if you are purchasing a gift card.) Not even the cash + one card trick works at Kmart, because as soon as you leave the cash screen, you will have your cash refunded to you!

      • You cannot do split payments at Target self checkouts when purchasing gift cards. (No idea about staff-assisted checkouts.)

          Ahhh very handy to know! I was using a card-only Target self checkout! To be fair, nearly all self checkouts at the last Target I visited were card only.

          No. Those are not operated by a dedicated staff member, so no split payments are possible. (I see where the confusion has come from!)

          The only Coles checkouts where you can do split payments on purchases of gift cards are:

          • The service desk (i.e. where tobacco is sold).

          • The express checkouts where the checkout is operated by a dedicated staff member and the staff member packs your groceries for you.

          • The checkouts with the conveyor belts where the checkout is operated by a dedicated staff member and the staff member packs your groceries for you.

          Not all staff are aware that you cannot do split payments at Coles self checkouts, so be prepared for the occasional staff member who questions why you are not going through a self checkout!

            @WookieMonster: Ah I see, you are talking about the most common staffed conveyor belt ones. Thought you were referring to those new self serve conveyor belts which I havent had much chance to try yet.

            For target when buying gift cards, card payment must be the final payment type, i.e. for the full amount. You cant do a partial payment with card and a modal window will pop up telling you so.

              The reason I point this out is that the error message you get on the self checkout when you attempt split payments for purchases of gift cards strongly indicates that you can only go to the service desk to split payments, when in reality any checkout operated by a dedicated staff member can handle split payments.

          Depends on the prepaid card, if it's an Active/Only1, Perfect EFTPOS or Westfield EFTPOS they've been BIN blocked to not be allowed for transactions including giftcards.

              Woolworths have only BIN-blocked gift cards sold in their stores from being able to purchase some other gift cards in their stores.

              Considering that Woolworths does not sell Vanilla Visa gift cards or Coles Mastercard gift cards, you should be fine to use them to purchase TCN GIFT gift cards later today.

      I believe that this is a standard condition for this type of deal.
      You can purchase 5 in one go or over the week but a maximum of 5 cards to get the bonus points.

      That's dependent on each restaurant. They're free to choose to accept any method payments they wish as long as it includes legal tender (unless it's payment up font as you're not in debt).

      Those “usual” Flybuys offers specifically exclude the purchase of gift cards in the fine print. I have been trying for a few years and have not been able to get those offers to be triggered by the purchase of gift cards.

          If you buy 5x $50 Restaurant Choice gift cards through this deal, you will earn 10,000 bonus Flybuys points (on top of the 250 standard Flybuys points you earn everyday).

          The terms and conditions is trying to say that you can purchase different denominations of the same gift card type or different gift card and you will still earn bonus Flybuys points on the first five eligible gift cards purchased during this deal.

          • If you buy 3x $100 Restaurant Choice gift cards and 2x $50 Restaurant Choice gift cards through this deal, you will earn 10,000 bonus Flybuys points (on top of the 400 standard Flybuys points you earn everyday).

          • If you buy 1x $100 Restaurant Choice gift card, 2x $50 Restaurant Choice gift cards and 2x $200 Celebration gift cards through this deal, you will earn 10,000 bonus Flybuys points (on top of the 600 standard Flybuys points you earn everyday).

      Celebration gift cards are only sold in $100 and $200 denominations, so keep that in mind. (And yes, they work at Officeworks instore… I used a couple instore at Officeworks last week. It should also work on Officeworks’ online store, but I have not tried this myself.)

      The reasons for the “$50 and above” language is that Ultimate Eats gift cards are sold in $30 and $50 denominations at Coles, so Coles is trying to ensure that customers know that the $30 Ultimate Eats gift card is not part of this deal.

          The reason I wrote my comment above is that I had a couple of people PM me with issues using Ultimate and Celebration gift cards on the Officeworks store just before Christmas.

          One of them reached out to BHN, but BHN could not see any of the ten attempted purchases on the gift card at all, which indicates that Officeworks was declining the transaction, not BHN. Officeworks did later tell them the transaction was blocked for “security” reasons, which to me sounds like Officeworks saw a prepaid gift card being used as a payment method and then deciding to stop the transaction. Keep in mind this person was actually trying to buy a printer, not a gift card…

      At the moment, it’s a good “discount”. However, I will note that at least one discounted gift card portal sells Barbeques Galore gift cards at a 10% discount everyday.

      Historically, it is not the best “discount”.

      • Celebration gift cards were 15% off a few weeks ago.

      • Ultimate gift cards were 15% off one and two months ago. (Ultimate Everyone, Him and Home gift cards feature Barbeques Galore as a participating retailer.)

      • Selected $50 Ultimate gift cards were sold with 2,000 bonus Flybuys points over a year ago.

      If you were wondering, those 15% discounts usually only coincide with Black Friday and Christmas.

        Could be completely wrong, as I've never tried it (someone will have to take one for the team), but I believe it may be possible if one contacts customer service? In their FAQs, one of the questions is:

        Is the physical Card required to be used at the EFTPOS pin pad to authorise my purchase when using a Restaurant Choice Gift Card?

        The restaurant must use the pin pad provided when redeeming a Restaurant Choice Gift Card for goods or services as directed by the POS terminal.
        If you’ve already added your Restaurant Choice Gift Card to your mobile wallet or exchange it for an eGift card, then you will not require your physical card.

    I just bought the Restaurant Choice Gift Card from Coles and used the card at one of the local coffee shop and it worked just fine. Looks like they have removed the restriction on participating restaurants and replaced it with restrictions on Merchant Category groups as reflected in clause 2.5 in their updated terms and conditions.       I just bought a bunch of these myself. Hopefully get all the FB points as advertised.

      I am puzzled how they make money from this - if all merchants in the restaurant category accepts this card, then there is no individual agreement with each merchant. And there is no surcharge to purchase. So obviously Coles get these at some discount, and Coles profits on top. How do the restaurants then not lose money? If the restaurants get the full amount on the bill, and Coles already profited, how do the GC creators make money?

        This is pure speculation on my part but I will take a stab.

The card issuer ends up making money on unused card / lost cards / merchant fees / interest on the funds etc. They rely on past patterns to estimate each of the above components to come up with the profitabilty in aggrgate that then enables them to fund the promotion.

        I think that is the reason why a lot of visa/mastercard gift card providers have stopped ato payments due to the low merchant fees and the fact that most people end up using all the value of the card when making tax payments.

        Pehaps someone in the industry can throw some more light on this

          You're on the right track. When they had the discounted MasterCard I seen a staff memo that outlined they had secured a deal with the card issuer to sell these at a discount to help boost sales.

      The physical cards are EFTPOS cards and cannot be used online.

            Unlike Ultimate cards they are eftpos based so cannot simply be added to Apple Pay with the card number ect.

              @JordanM: The old style physical card you are restricted, I agree

              The new style you can exchange to egift add to wallet to tap or you can swipe to pay with the physical card as long as it's on the list of MCCs

    Restaurant Choice are good… I have used them at hotels and motels couple of times as they are on the MCCs

    Also worked for swimming pool entry… Sports club mcc
