Nah it's been cheaper here's the deal history, I have been following up on deals/comments in the deals for the Quest 2 for awhile now so I can confirm this is accurate.
64GB - Has been as low as $419 Shipped from Amazon AU.
128GB - Replaced the 64GB in the line up, has been as low as $479 Shipped with $100 Amazon Promo credit.Then price jack came, 128GB was $629 with $150 Amazon Promo credit. Did not sound appealing at all to me so decided to wait for the Quest 3 which will be released this year (likely at Meta event in October) instead of over paying for a on the way out generation headset.
Edit: Forgot to mention Quest 3 according to Zuck has a price estimate of $300 to $500USD before tax (US prices are always before tax). So base model $444AUD + 10% = $490AUD. Now I know this sounds optimistic so my guess is Zuck's "$300, $400, $500USD" quote means more like Base model $300USD = $300 to $399USD.
So ball park $490AUD to $648AUD. Meaning worst case scenario base model Quest 3 will still be the same price as the current jacked base model Quest 2, but it will be an entire generation ahead with pancake lenses, higher resolution (Q3 = 2,064 by 2,208 pixels per eye/Q2 = 1,832 x 1920 pixels per eye) and Snapdragon XR3 SOC.On top of that I am hopeful that the Quest 3 base model storage will either be the same (covid), or possibly higher than the current Quest 2 base 128GB storage. Here's to me hoping we get 256GB base model storage for the Quest 3 for $490 to $648AUD.
I think this is realistic because here is a over optimistic quote from that is echoed in many articles "The Quest 3 could also get a bump in RAM and storage to 512GB SSD and 12GB RAM."

Besides that though, the local streaming from your pc is the killer feature if you can take advantage of it.
To me, the 128 should cater for most people (i went for the 128gb on launch over the 64gb, which these days is the new base size).
Tbh, given a choice i would go for a cheaper 128gb over a base 256gb quest 3.

Yeah I guess it does depend on your use case. But personally I will be using the Quest 3 as a standalone device so would like to have the freedom to leave most things installed and download as much as I want without needing to spend time and effort to free up storage space. Since it will be my first VR device ever, I will be purchasing/downloading games left right and center if it looks good I will give it a go. I might not like it at first, but want to leave it installed to give it another chance in the future etc.
You never know right? Maybe you have a tonne of stuff installed/movies on the device, then you want to download that latest release that is 50GB+ and you realize you only have 45GB of free space. So then you need to sort through all your stuff, choose what to keep and what to delete etc which could take over 20 minutes of your time.

On the flipside to some of the comments here, I have read a few comments already that mention they managed to fill up 64GB pretty quick. 128GB IMO is not that far off from 64GB at least in my experience with other storage formats e.g. SD cards and phones and such. So yeah I would be very happy for the Quest 3 to add more base storage.
For example with the microSD cards I purchased 64GB to begin with because I knew that's all I would use, but over time I filled it to 95% with a lot of music so decided to upgrade to 128GB. Now I am sitting on the limit with 95% full out of 128GB. I haven't needed to buy again, but if I were to buy again I might consider more than just doubling the capacity.

Currently this deal is only offering the jacked up price with a tiny discount. Yes there were Amazon Promo credit deals but they have not returned since, so currently if you are looking at the Quest 2 you will be paying jacked up prices which I mentioned in my original comment above is going to be similar to the price of a Base model Quest 3 (storage unconfirmed).
If you mean "cheaper 128GB Quest 2" as in later when the US price drops come to AU. I dunno by then I have already been waiting on the Quest 3 since last year (don't feel like I'm waiting long since I don't have any other gaming device now), by the 16th even with a lower priced 128GB Quest 2, I think I will still wait for the next generation Quest 3. Honestly price drops are coming but that will likely just make it equivalent to pre price jacked periods, so $479 ish for 128GB Quest 2, or wait 6 months for Quest 3 I think I will choose Quest 3.

Don't know what to expect after covid so it's possible they will limit base storage of Quest 3 to 128GB. I guess if overall storage use is less than I think, I can worry less about hitting the limit.
My original point was regardless of storage comparing current jacked price Quest 2 at similar price to October release Quest 3, I will easily pick the Quest 3. And at the end I wrote I am "hoping for one bump up in base storage limit".Only in the comments section of this post today did I hear the Quest 2 is going to receive a price drop on the 16th of May. Not sure how big a price drop but even if it is "back down to" $479 for the base model Quest 2, I am pretty happy to still save up the $150 to $200 extra and wait for base model Quest 3.

I looked at the planned releases for PSVR2 and they are pretty much all the same games that I played on my windows mixed reality headset 5 years ago. It honestly seems like a pretty stale bunch of titles other than whatever that horizon game is called.

I forgot where I heard it, either in a youtube video or web article. But information is hinting towards Zuck's quote for Quest 3 being "$300, $400, $500USD in that price range" meaning "for the base model". So it doesn't mean $300 to $500USD depending on storage size/tier.
This means base model Quest 3 is going to be potentially as high as $500USD on release, current conversion puts that at $747AUD. +10% tax and that pushes it to $820AUD.
Hopefully as Zuck said this is worst case scenario. But at the same time I have heard prices for stuff especially electronics get "Australia Tax" which means higher prices than other regions. Let's wait and see.

There was a massive price hike as Meta were losing money on each headset.
Amazon had a deal last year that offset the hike with store credit, so did Kogan, but that hasn't been repeated yet.

I guess if you were sure you would use it to buy the battery pack "Pro" strap then you kind of could because then it's part of the headset.I admit I was bummed when I missed the chance to grab the Quest 2 for $419 Shipped (no promo credit) but that was almost a year ago. But still paying $479 for the 128GB didn't sound too good to me when Quest 3 was on the horizon. I decided I would rather save up the extra $200 during the wait and be ready to buy the Quest 3 on release.
Oculus taking a hit on unit price and getting it into our hands was a smart move. I think that proved there's a market for VR gaming at the right price. They're making billions from their store. I think we'll see VR lift late in the next generation once the prices come down. Development is increasing at a steady rate. AR will be the technology to keep an eye on, it's going to be way more ubiquitous than VR.
As for a $700+ Quest 2 - I think they're just phasing it out, like the Quest which will effectively be abandoned very soon.They're making billions from their store.

(It's only a click away, rather than having to sort through your installed data and decide how to free up space which could take 20 minutes).Honestly, I've never found the storage to be the issue with the 64GB model. The average game size is about 2GB. I'd say the next gen of units will have the same battery issues as this gen's. Without buying additional parts, 2 hours isn't long enough imo. But yeah if you haven't already got a Quest2, now is not the time to jump in.

Pico 4 is definitely a jump ahead of Quest 2, and could be close to Quest 3. Can't say for sure yet because Quest 3 hasn't been released.
But how do you know the Pico 4 isn't collect data points and sending them back to Pico in the background?One point pretty likely point though that makes the Pico 4 better than the Quest 3 though is the rear mounted battery that makes the front portion thinner and lighter. And the battery being at the back makes the Pico more balanced on your head front to back.
Quest 3 blueprints have confirmed it will still have the battery in the front and while it's thinner than the Quest 2, I don't think they would change such a major thing before release.

The only way I could recommend this unit is if you have a high-end PC so you can use link over wifi. But even then, there's so many new models about to hit the market, I think the ship has sailed on the Quest2. Unless money is no object, of course.

- Why do you HAVE to use quest 2 over wifi? Played every single one of my VR games over a 2M 90-degree Type C cable with no issues. Not to mention the bandwidth limitation over wifi where you pretty much need a wifi6 router to play games.
I am negging this due to the fact how it was released at $639 AUD and increasing to recover losses, not due to rising costs - considering how old this headset is, I dont see the reason for the deal.
Whilst its great for a lot of people, theres always greater VR tech coming out or around the corner from now.I'd highly suggest looking into Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree - buy it, see how you like it and by then the next gen VR headsets are out.

I don't feel like increasing the price as far as they did and then lowering back down on a product several years old is a deal. I bought a second hand one (granted only 128gb) over new years for $400 flat off ebay, which is in perfect condition. I refused to pay the high asking price.
Quest 1 has a better screen in the headset. Proper quality OLED vs greyish crap LCD.

The 128GB model is more than sufficient. You would be much better off picking that one up and putting the extra into a BOBOVR M2 Plus halo headstrap and battery combo plus a few top games (with game referrals now you can also get 25% off aside from Beatsaber I think).

Would not recommend at this price, ~$420 for the 64GB was a deal years ago. I've not come close to filling it with games worth playing, there's still not much for standalone, the rest will be streamed via VD or link anyway.
