Sydney Airport to CBD Transfer Hack Similar to Melbourne Airport?

Skybus is expensive to reach Melbourne airport. I took the Metro train from CBD (Flinders Street) to Broadmeadows Station on the Cragieburn line, and then took the 901 bus to the airport (15 minutes ride). All was in public transport and just one trip!

Is there a similar hack available for Sydney airport to CBD transfer where we don't get price gouged for a short ride?

Imagine doing that wth luggage and then hopping on a 16hr flight to somewhere.

But what about the $3.80 saved?

I guess that's a cheeseburger at McDonald's in the international terminal so I see your point.

        Disregard my statement above.

      • In Sydney you save about $14 in comparison to taking the train direct to CBD

catch to wolli creek and walk ( for international) domestic walk from mascot

    • this is the one

  • I’ve done that in Melbourne. Very simple, cheap & easy.

Look how awkwardly the footpath abruptly ends for no reason. They don't want anyone walking in or out of the airport, at least not along Joyce drive towards Botany road.

But I think the best way to save a few bucks is to walk the 20 min from domestic airport to Mascot train station or vice versa. Not fun if you have luggage.

    • If you want to walk down that way then it's better to walk down Ross Smith Ave where traffic is lighter and slower.

    • Thats not how it looks like now anyway, very very old photo.

This is the route I walk, takes about 15min if you have a go google maps

I walk through the car park to avoid the main entry road to the terminals

doing the bus route would be fine if you have bags, but point to point the time is the same but the bus will cost you $2.50. Also the 420 and the 350 dont stop at Terminal 2, only Terminal 3 arrivals

      • cerealJay is talking about walking to Botany Road, which has nothing to do with walking to Mascot station.

As for being dropped of on the T3 side of the car park, that's not really an issue it's a quick and easy walk via the underground tunnel from T3 to T2, leading to the train entrance, there's even a moving walkway to help. It used to be even easier when the normal walkway between the two terminals through the P1 carpark was available.

      • The bus is about $1 after deducting the $2 transfer credit

        • The bus portion would be $0.24 to be precise. It's $2.24 minus the $2 transfer discount.

          • @Trance N Dance: $3.20 peak fare..

More the point it’s negligible and it’s pretty much always better to catch the bus. And the walk is mostly alongside busy roads which is rather unpleasant.

      • Thats not how it looks like now anyway…

Here's another angle from June 2022. The footpath ends exactly as it did in the other view from 2018. The only difference is the shrubs have grown:

Nobody is walking down Joyce Drive after exiting the airport.

I agree with your route, looks about right. I just find it interesting that an 8 lane road (Joyce) can have no footpath on either side.

        • Well anything named after a certain joyce is clearly fubar'ed…shareholders probably 🤔

    • If you want to walk to Botany Rd from there, cross where that pavement ends and take the first right onto Baxter Rd it leads straight to Botany Rd.
I always park in Mascot and walk that way.

      • You are right, Baxter Rd is the pedestrian way to Botany Rd. Funny, even that road the footpath ends on one side, replaced with grass and overgrowth. But at least the other side has more or less a working footpath.

Hey look there's even a sign "pedestrian access to airport" at other end of Baxter! They've thrown a bone to peds…

Take the train to Mascot station and then hop on the either the 420 for Domestic and International terminals or the 350 for just the Domestic terminal. Because the train to the airport is already passing through Mascot station, this only adds about 10-15mins to the trip time due to the bus transfer.

Skybus is expensive to reach Melbourne airport.

Say that to my Uber fare that somehow jumped to $90 and the driver who attempted to not let me out without giving a 5 star rating. Now that was expensive.

    • damn dude… held hostage for $90 plus 5 star rating….hope you did the right thing :D

Uber refunded me in the end 😉 It was weird because it wasn't surge pricing and the trips are usually $40.

there is a train, direct to central, costs around $16 I think, or a government bus outside where you can get off at a cheaper train, direct train is easier. I get the governemnt bus to campsie, says Burwood on front, or Bondi Junction in the other direction

    • Train is $18.39 for an adult, $15.40 for concession or child.

  • Hi there, I think Sydney airport is a lot more competitive so its not quite the same as Melb etc. Depending on your needs (luggage, number of people, where you are going) there are lots of shuttle/transfer companies at quite good prices (if you have luggage or lots of people), but public transport will always be much cheaper if you are on your own.
The big hack for Sydney is that there is an "Airport station surcharge" of about $16 each way because the station was built by a private company - so the locals all get a bus then jump on the train at the next stop.
If your going to the CBD from an internal flight then as soon as you see the luggage belts head outside and cross the road and walk through the carpark and you will see Qantas T3 terminal. Get the 400 or 420 bus which run about every 10-15 mins headed to Mascot or Bondi (NB theyre loop busses so if its headed somewhere else then you will be on for a very long journey until its gone all the way round!) and get off at Mascot/Mascot Station and catch any train from there to wherever you want (Town Hall, Central, Wynyard, Circular Quay etc). Mascot is on the airport line so the exact same train goes through there plus more.
Walk time is 5 mins total and you won't be kept waiting more than 10 mins at any stop. Saves you about $14 pp each way (as you have to pay about $2 for the bus). You'll see loads of locals and airport workers doing it and all getting off at the next stop and walking into the train station!
Only other scam at Sydney is that if you want to buy or topup an opal card at the airport train station then its a minimum $35 topup, whereas its $10 absolutely everywhere else. Just use your visa/MC/amex card to tap on/off and you will get the exact same prices as opal including ALL the discounts - EXCEPT you can not mix using your watch/phone/card even if they are linked to the same credit card because Apple Pay/Google Pay use device ID or virtual card numbers that aren't the same as the number printed on your card so its technically a different card even though its your same bank account - so if you want to use your watch then ONLY use your watch etc. Don't mix and swap as you risk being double charged or not getting all the discounts. Always tap off everywhere (except some ferries).

    • It's $20 minimum top up else where now. However if you top up via the app it's a $10 minimum still.

      • ok, shows how often I use it! Thanks

  • In Sydney catch the the 420 (?) bus from either of the domestic or international terminals to Mascot station and then catch the train to the CBD. It saves the $15(?) platform fee at the airport stations.

Apologies for question marks but I'm going off memory
