they taste like shit… that's why they're so cheap.

does any body know if Colesworth carry good pre-made schnitzels?

    • +2

      Try a proper deli

    • +6

Because it's processed chuicken carcass mush.

    • +1

Yep they taste like those chicken nuggets you get from a cheap buffet or something

    • +2

Yeah these ain't great. I buy a couple when I hate myself and my bellies empty.

      So 39% bread crumb

      • +8

        Don’t be so sure.

      • +2

Theres filler material they put in the meat part too.

Good chicken Schnizels/nuggets are made from whole slices of chicken. When its mashed up they can add all sorts of schniz to it to pad the volume and reduce the amount of meat.

        • Re the filler material…I've often wondered why the percentage of chicken meat listed in the ingredients was so low. I couldn't see how the crumbs/batter could be between 40-60% of the schnitzel.

    • I want to see someone buy it and weigh off the crumbs to see the chicken breast% vs processing

  • +15

I’d rather pay $2 for the chicken, handful of breadcrumbs, flour and part of an egg that makes a real schnitzel in ten mins. This is trash.

    • Yep it’s the best, Although i prefer tenders this way, Great in the airfryer too …

      • +1

these are undefeated in the air fryer. homemade chicken schnitty sandwiches go hard

      • Do you need to spray with oil when air frying?

    • +1

      Recipe?

      • chicken, handful of breadcrumbs, flour and part of an egg

        • -1

Beat on high for 60 seconds, or until stiff peaks form.

        • but how u cook? in air fryer or fry on pan?

          • -1

            @Homr:

Beat on high for 60 seconds, or until stiff peaks form.

          • @Homr: Grill in the electric oven works too

I try not to use the air fryer for crumbed stuff because it tends to make a mess.

        1 chicken breast
        Egg
        Plain flour
        Panko breadcrumbs
Neutral flavoured oil with high ish smoke point eg canola oil
        Salt, pepper

        Makes 2 schnitzels

Dry brine breast (rub 1/4 TSP salt into both sides, put on plate in fridge for a few hours until water reabsorbed)
Butterfly breast (put breast smooth side down on cutting board, put hand on top then cut through breast into two roughly equal cutlets)
Put a few tbsp of flour into a dish, season with salt and pepper, stir to combine
Crack egg into another dish, whisk until combined
Put sufficient breadcrumbs to cover both breasts in a 3rd dish
        For each breast piece:
        pat dry with paper towel
cover in flour mixture, shake off excess
dip into egg wash to cover breast, drain excess
Dip into bread crumbs until covered on both sides.
Grab a high sided pan, Dutch oven or wok.
Fill with enough oil so that the breast can float.
        Heat oil to 190C
Carefully place breasts in oil, laying away from self. Cook until first side is done, about 2 minutes, bread crumbs should be golden.
Flip breasts to cook other side, another 2 mins.
Remove and place on plate with paper towel.
Check centre with meat thermometer to be sure it's cooked.
If under temp, finish in oven, 160c.
Consume as is or add sauce, ham, cheese and cook in oven until cheese melted.

When oil is cool, strain back into a clean bottle to reuse.

Feel free to (profanity) with it a bit, eg add some finely grated parmesan or other spices to the flour.

    • Are the schnitzels that butchers or places like Chicken George sell, mostly chicken breast?

      • Some will use thigh. But generally, any reputable butcher will make proper schnitzels

  • +3

When nearly 40% of your so-called "chicken" schnitzel isn't chicken, you have a problem.

    • +5

40% actually isn't that bad. Consider the eggs, bread crumbs, spices and so on. I have seen chicken nuggets with under 30 percent chicken…

  • +1

    bin chicken schnitty

  • clear tastes of salt, saturated fat and breadcrumbs…the rest is a mystery to my palate

  • +27

Why the hate, some people have no choice and kids see this as a treat. It's great if you're doing it tough like a lot of us.

    • +6

Not healthy to eat. Better options for kids

      • Agree, better off just buying the chicken breast and crumbing yourself.

    • +10

Even at half price these are more expensive by weight than raw chicken breast, so not only is there a choice, but a cheaper and healthier one.

      • Don't eat raw chicken breast though.

    • +8

cheap and easy to make your own - chicken breast, flour, an egg and a splash of milk, salt and pepper.

if you dont want to pay additional costs for breadcrumbs, save your crusts.

if you want your kids to eat for a day, give them a woolies schnitty.

if you want your kids to eat healthy for a lifetime, teach them to make their own.

healthy eating habits start at home, at an increasingly young age.

    • +10

Sounds like your doing it tough because you think this is either a treat, economical, or good parenting.

Raw chicken & the basics needed to make a home made shnitty is cheaper than this already, even at half price.

The time it takes to prep & make a shnitty with the kids is very small (less than 5min), it's ridiculously quick and easy (flour, egg + milk, & any seasoning or herbs you like). It's also a great opportunity to spend time together with family while giving the kids an opportunity to their hands grubby & have a bit of fun while learning a life-long cooking skill they can pass on to their own kids one day in the same way.

Literally best thing for an easy burger and the ingredients for two nights is less then $10.

  • better just get a packet of chicken nuggets and airfry em

    • Any brands for chick nuggets you would recommend?

      • Ingham's Chicken Breast Nuggets Tempura

      • Honestly the generic branded stuff is best value for buck at like 500 grams for 4 bucks, yes Ingham tastes better but cost a lot more. Give em all a go and see

  • -6

    this or 4060 Ti?

    $0.80->0.99->1.2->1.3->$1.4

    up up up…..

    • The Colesworth duopoly mission statement. At Colesworth we get our Woolies worth of profits for shareholders by using inflation as a convenient excuse to increase prices & margins whilst marketing it in a way to have customers believing they are still getting value for money, that's the un-Australian values we uphold.
When i can buy 2L of the same brand milk at my local asian grocery store for $1 less than Colesworth who conveniently have identical prices that says it all about their margins on household staples. Who has the bigger buying power i wonder?

      • Is it a oligopoly though, the small players aldi, iga exist but cant shake up the logisitics enough to threaten the dominance of these two. Royal commission overdue into their control.

  • +1

Saw this in store earlier, worth saying these are "sandwich" schnitzels and not the bigger full size ones that used to go on sale for this price. These bastards ain't worth even a buck forty.

  • I know there's a fake big Mac sauce but has anyone found a fake maccas chicken burger sauce?

    • +1

I thought it was just mayo they put on their chicken burgers? Is it really something special

      • Subtlety different but different. If you A/B McChicken sauce and mayo at the same time, you can tell the difference.

    • Kewpie Mayo

I lived on these things when they $1 each back in the day. Simple times

To Colesworth, if you are reading.

We like convenience but we also like quality. Please sell us a delicious Chicken Schnitzel, so that we can airfry at home.

  • +1

40% inflation. Woolworths is a joke.

    • Wooljerks

    • Albo's Australia

  • Heads up boys it's not even chicken breast it's basically made from the same garbage as chicken nuggets. Processed chicken offcuts. Tastes very low quality, I personally would only eat it if it was free.

  • Woolworths has a decent Schnitty in the Deli, labelled as the “Pub Style”. Regular price is $4, but intermittently on sale like all Deli products. It’s significantly larger than all the other options and is seemingly an actual breast fillet, not reconstituted mash meat.

Still better to butterfly a breast, marinate in a brine for a few hours (with spices or whatever else you want) and then crumb and cook. Obviously more time consuming, but it has more controllable nutrition and it’s much cheaper.

  • i asked at a pub in melbourne why the dinner parma tasted great and the lunch special so bad ….. was told for lunch special they use the pre-made ones from chicken mince to keep it cheap, dinner no specials so they can afford to use chicken breast and make in kitchen ……
