  • I was eyeing this off at half price. I don't think it will get any better than this for prime day…

    • +1

I bought two and don't have use for it atm, cheaper than the indoor ones too, if you are running it behind something doesn't matter just will be waterproof too.

  • +1

Are you able to link (daisy chain) these to more of the same strip?

I don't see a way, but it seems odd… Am I missing something?

    • From what I saw I don't think you can. Only connecting them to the same higher powered power adapter.

      • Technically not a daisy chain, but you can use a T adapter

  • Is this Bluetooth only or does it have the standard hue connectivity as well (ZigBee right?).

  • Can’t cut or expand the strip. Can control using Bluetooth and compatible with the hue bridge. Pretty good price doubt it will get cheaper on prime day.

  • Great find OP. Bought 5. Thanks

  • Thanks OP.

Any examples where you would place this?

    • Underneath your TV cabinet, or kitchen bench are 2 examples :)

Wouldn't you buy something cheaper like those popular Yealight deals (10m for $24)? What's special with these?

        • I believe the Yeelights you mentioned are indoor only

          • +2

@joetrim: The hue lights also don’t send your personal information back to china

        • +1

I guess the Hue ecosystem is what appeals to most.

I've been using a combination of downlights, e27, gu10 and light strips around the house for the past 3 years and I really like the Hue app.

I agree, they're pricey for what they are but for me it's a "buy once, cry once" scenario. Out of all the Hue products I own, the downlights are my favourite.

          • @bataleon: Rbg downlights or white ambiance.

            • @Jklaro: White ambience are the go. They're cheaper than RGB too which is good. My e27 globes and light strips are RGB, and 99% of the time I have them on some shade of white. The RGB novelty wears off pretty quickly imo.

Cooler white during the day and warm white at night (dimmed nice and low).

              • @bataleon: You think one in middle of bedroom is enough?
                You got dimmer switches also?

                • @Jklaro: For a 3m x 4m bedroom you'll ideally need 2.

All the dimming is controlled through the app so there's no need to run cable for dimmer switches.

There are neat routines too, which include "mimic presence" which is great for when you go way on holiday.

  • I remember the good old time, 5M sells for 29 at bunnings.

    • omg when!

      • Around 2020

        • dang that would have been awesome 😭

    • +1

      I remember this as well! I scored 2 x 5M for $29 each!

  • Do they support Zigbee

    • Looks like only Bluetooth. But look at the comment further below about an Aliexpress controller.

These are part of the low voltage, outdoor, waterproof range. They do not include a power supply or any real length of cable. They do not daisy chain, but you can split the power supply with a T pictured here.

    • +2

      Good info.
A low wattage power supply is included

    • +1

It does come with the power supply shown it in the photos.

    • Oops, does come with 60W power supply. Pretty good deal as they sell for $60ish normally.

      • I've read elsewhere it's 40w. Probably irrelevant unless you plan to plug other outdoor devices in.

        • I actually think it is just 25W, but hoping for 60W as per description.

for the HA folks, these controllers are bloody brilliant: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003429952753.html

I have quite a few of them (single colour only, 5v RGB, 12-24v RGBW) and they are great.

Pair them with some 12V power supply (I had 2 around the house so I bought 2 others) and a waterproof led strip and you have a much cheaper and much longer too solution. Some of the strips come already wires so it is just a matter of connecting the 2 together.

The 1 thing that I have an issue with is that the RGBW strip and controllers have B and G reversed, easily fixed with an intermediate cable but I thought I would mention it.

Not affiliated in any way with the sellers and the link is not an affiliate one.

    • Cool idea, pity about tuya tho.

      • Tuya is fine if it’s zigbee.
It’s the wifi you need to avoid

        • why do you need to avoid wifi tuya? I have a wifi dimmer and pet feeder and it hasn't missed a beat. You can also do local tuya through HA

          • @xtommyk: I use newer TuyaLocal (diff. from LocalTuya) seems easier to use. Need to kink out some bugs.

            • @MKBHD: This requires no TuyaLocal, I just paired it directly.

      • I do not have anything Tuya (hub or anything like that) or the Tuya integration in HA. They just work.

    • So this makes it Zigbee but you also need it plus a 12v power supply?

      • You need a controller, a led strip and a 12v power supply. See if you have an old laptop with a power supply like that.

    • That looks pretty cool. Any recommendations for led strips?

      • @misu p I'd like to know as well if you have good recommendations for led strips to go with that Tuya controller :)

For DC5V USB LED Controller I got this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005298384609.html - they work but no individual addressing of leds on them. Do not take a strip that is too long as you will have issues finding a power supply that can handle it (plus you would have to supply it every X meters). This has an issue because 2 of the channels are switched between the strip and the controller, meaning blue is green and the other way around. I put some cables between them to get the correct channels.

For 12v power supply, I got these: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004779547398.html without the power cord to the wall as I had a few around the house already from old PCs.

For the 12v strips warm white I got this for : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004884791160.html, no issues with it, however, you will probably want to buy some of these https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004346189786.html to connect the strip to the controller

For the 12v RGBW I got this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004884791160.html this has an issue because 2 of the channels are switched between the strip and the controller, meaning blue is green and the other way around. I did not bother to switch them as I only really want to switch colors between some basic ones.

    • One big advantage of the Hue strip is that it bends horizontally - that is, you can snake it along the ground around objects. The AliExpress strips can only bend vertically - that is, in a loop - so will have to be mounted in a straight line.

The Hue strips also have a diffuser already built in.

  • Great price

  • I can't use it as Hue Play around my tv?
