  Can anyone comment on the quality of the wool ones? I bought some explorer socks many years ago and they've only just got to the point where I needed to replace them. I bought what I thought were like-for-like replacements but they're absolute garbage quality. Maybe I bought the 'cotton' ones and not the wool ones?

    They shrink like crazy, lovely when new of course. Maybe they should have washed full cold and not at 30° like I do

    Vintage explorer socks were good, the wool ones I got for half price from a supermarket a few years were terrible quality.

    Explorer sock were once well renowned for quality, when they were still manufactured in Australia until nearly 20 years ago.

    Now, they are crap.
    Better to buy something else.

      Remember Explorer socks ads espousing their “Australian-made” virtue - anybody left to cares that hardly anyone makes anything here?
      If there’s a conflict with China, where will we get our goods (with Big W, Target, Kmart emptied) and to whom will miners sell Australian iron and coal - country’s remaining tax revenue?
      Forget AUKUS rort - reunite with the continent and get resolute politicians as a bonus.

        Crikey.

        I was only talking about the build quality of socks, and then you decided to go off on a tangent and somehow had to make it something political about it.

        If the same socks were made elsewhere, using the same quality of materials, and to the same manufacturing specifications and quality assurance; then practically none of us would be complaining about the current batches of socks right now, because they have certainly gone downhill.

        The issue was about the product, not the origin of where it came from.

          @mull: “Explorer” brand is now exploited by a different company with different values and priorities so I accounted for “once .. renowned for quality … now, … crap” consequence. The rest was prognostication on another consequence. From tree to woods.

  This is a very poor item, and the socks lost elasticity after one use. Bought in bulk last year and they refused to refund at first. Then asked for restocking/return shipping fee. Finally sent them back the pairs which were unused and got a partial refund. Stay away.

  I find the wool ones last forever but are prone to hitting tonnes of lint balls, the work socks last a decent amount of time but they do lose their softness fairly quickly but are still reasonable (I wear them almost every day with work boots) now as someone else mentioned the copper/wool socks shrink really badly, while they are the nicest warm/outdoor style when new they turn stiff and become an ordeal to put on even after only a couple of washes I'll never buy them again.
  Basically the classic wool ones are the best if you don't care about the lint or are happy to remove them every couple washes otherwise the work socks are long lasting but there are better options imho.
  That's my 2c anyway.

  Best heavy duty socks for cold wet climates/gumboots are Norsewear Farm Fleck socks. Sure they cost more upfront but they last years, can be thrown in the washing machine on cold, and keep feet toasty warm. https://nznaturalclothingshop.co.nz/products/farm-fleck-wool…
