        I was still in highschool during those days, clunky Xvid encoders were the only option for us; none of us could afford a DivX licence.

          I didn't get a DVD player until well and truly after DivX was done. I just did some reading and turns out I knew nothing about it, I had seen numerous pirated DVDs from buddies like 10/15 years ago that would show the logo at the start, I had no idea it was an entire format / oofshoot of DVD, figured all this time it was just a fancy pants AVI player or something.

            @TheDukeOfNukem: Yeah, it was a full licenced video codec. Its still around today. Most people have switched to H264 though.

            But for both those codecs, most people cant afford the licence costs, so are using compatible open source alternatives like Xvid and X264.

        VLC handles both quite well.

        I miss realmedia; once PCs were powerful enough to actually decode it in a timely fashion, the quality was insane.

    If all you want is an external USB DVD writer. Then you can buy an actual brand name off ebay for $39 delivered. Be better than this noname crap. Samsung GP60NB50 DVD writer.

        Better than a noname brand (if it even is a brand) which one has never heard of. I wouldn't trust that with a 10 foot pole to last even a few months before carking it.

        If you want a different brand there's ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U LITE for $34.60 delivered. Still way more reliable.

      Its probably because people dont realise how much power these DVD readers need and how little power a normal USB port can provide. You'd need to use both ports to get enough power, and then it might not support multiple ports at the same time, so using all the ports at the same time likely wouldnt work.

      How do you get 16x write speeds for laptop style drives which are only designed for 8x.

      If it does indeed spin at 16x in a laptop style drive then it will be horribly noisy and unreliable. They aren't designed to operate at that RPM. But there's no way i can believe a 16x DVD speed claim for a laptop style external DVD drive. I've never seen one maybe for a reason.

        I can't see that claim made anywhere. It's probably 16x for CD writing, and they're being intentionally vague.

          Fourth picture down shows and claims 16x CD & DVD writing speed. But i call BS on that for DVD writing. There's no way that this writes a DVD at 16x speed. More like 8x DVD max in reality.

      That’s a really good question (not being sarcastic either). I have some old VHS tapes, wanted to play them to convert them to disc, but my VCR bit the dust and chewed the tape.

      Seems it’s near impossible (and expensive) to buy a VCR now. It’s also difficult finding a decent one 2nd hand.

          I have a DVR, and I was just going to essentially "dub" the few VHS tapes I wanted to keep and record them onto disc… once they're on disc I can make backups of them or rip/convert to any format, but without a working VCR, that's a lil difficult.

    24X read speed and we can dream back in the 90s.
    Maybe drives compatibility issues with Windows too so no thanks I don't take the risk.
    I also have plenty of games and data discs but I can't use them anymore because they are not compatible with modern computers.
    Just buy a well known and reliable brand, spend $5-10 more and avoid getting another cup holder.

      I get the feeling once this is passing through usb it will be more compatible, but maybe someone can verify about the logic or maybe someone who actually has one can comment.

      The last optical drive I relied on is in an old Dell laptop that I still have which runs some flavour of Linux depending on the time period, and it had enough issues even though it wasn't an uncommon drive, so I do hear ya

    Are DVDs eternal? As in make a video, include inside my coffin then in 1M years they can watch it? USB would succumb to floods etc but DVD with plastic should last longerrrrrrrr?

          Apparently even if the flash drive is made of pure gold it won't make a difference. Well the NAND flash inside of it suffers from bit rot when not used for many years making it useless even in storage.
