    Instant Wi-Fi upgrade for laptops

Don't all laptops already have wifi?

    • +7

Not all laptops have AC1200, especially older ones.

      • Oh… thanks

        • +9

This could also be used for PC with cheap mobo lacking Wifi.

          • +8

@Grey 13: I use ethernet on my PC, can't think why I'd also want wifi on it.

            • +3

              @jv: This is the way

            • +4

@jv: Er, how about if you didn’t have Ethernet?

            • +1

              @jv: Wireless displays?

            • @jv: Maybe not WiFi… but what about Bluetooth?

            • @jv:

I use ethernet on my PC, can't think why I'd also want wifi on it.

I use mine occasionally to connect to my phone hotspot when the NBN goes down.

              • @idonotknowwhy:

I use mine occasionally to connect to my phone hotspot when the NBN goes down.

I just use bluetooth, or even a cable to do that…
With a cable connection, you're phone also stays charged…

            • @jv: What if your dog pulls out the rj45 socket?
What if a tradie drills through the ethernet cable?
              What if…

              • +2

                @raybies:

What if your dog pulls out the rj45 socket?

                Because it's cat-5e ??

                I guess they could….

                • @jv: OMG CAT5e there's your problem, you need CAT 6A cable with extra fat AWG so that you spend 2hrs trying to get the wires throught the rj45 socket slots?
So while you're fixing your cabling you need the ASUS USB-AC53 Nano.

                  • @raybies:

                    you need CAT 6A cable

                    Why?

  • +3

According to 3C’s RRP is closer to $30 with a few dips here and there to $20… still decent price.
Curious how well this would work without a decent antenna?
Would jump on it but also need BT :-(

  • +17

I'm guessing it may state AC1200 but that's the theoretical speed of the internal processing chip. The actual bandwidth throughput of this would be a fraction of that due to the tiny antenna inside of this tiny USB adapter. It would probably be even way slower than the laptops internal Wi-Fi. You can't fit a good antenna inside of some thing so small. Trust me these will be crap. Good luck with that.

You need some thing like this WiFi USB adapter for it not to be pathetic. Larger antenna inside of it means way better speed and signal strength. But of course it does cost a lot more. You get what you pay for.

    • kinda like my 20W (4A?) charger that I measured to charge my iPhone at 1A ?

    • +1

tiny antenna inside of this tiny USB

Why you need to bring size into this? =(

  • Didn’t know it was such a deal. Purchased one yesterday for a desktop PC. Need it for a wifi display.

  • How does one like this compare against a wifi card with actual antennas?

    • +1

A WiFi card would beat this hands down. Bigger antennas to pick up a better signal.

You can only fit a tiny antenna into a Nano USB WiFi adapter.

      • Probably best for me to wait for that Aliexpress deal with the all in one wifi + bluetooth card then. I think they were like $26?

        • -4

I assume it's for a desktop PC. Those cheap WiFi cards off Aliexpress would be crap. You're better off going with a brand name and one with a removable antenna base which can sit on a desk for a better signal strength. For example this one is about $68 but you get what you pay for. That would knock the socks off this pathetic Nano USB WiFi adapter.

          • +5

@hollykryten: Nah fenvi cards are pretty decent. No reason to buy this one from TP link for over twice the price of the fenvi one since they both use Intel cards.

          • +1

@hollykryten: What dongle would you suggest with Bluetooth? Only about 5m from router but need BT for speakers.

            • @Low Punt: I see. If that's all you need it for only for Bluetooth and in direct sight without walls then this Nano USB adapter may be ok. Just it would be crap if you try to use it between walls.

          • @hollykryten: AliExpress wifi cards are fine, they have a little laptop sized PCIe slot with Intel 7260 or Intel AX200 in it which just has electrical passthrough to desktop size PCIe slot and some antenna mounts on the back.

I have used heaps of them and the antennas they come with are good if the PC is on the desk. You can always buy a desk mount magnetic base antenna if the PC you're putting it into is trapped in a cupboard or under a thick desk.

I have also bought tp-link ones when I need one in a hurry and they are the same performance.

        • Bought EDUP EP-9636GS 3000M with intel AX200 from Aliexpress and bluetooth not working

          • +1

@wt860: Have you tried the Windows 10/11 driver direct from the manufacturers web site?. I wonder if that might be needed to get the Bluetooth part of it working. I'm guessing it would be the latest driver that there is for it.

            https://www.szedup.com/support/driver-download/pcie/ep9636dl…

          • +1

@wt860: For the Bluetooth to work you need to connect the cable that goes from the card into a USB2 header on your motherboard.

            • @Agret: Strange that it would go through the USB 2 header.

            • @Agret: wow maybe I threw away that cable when I opened the box

              • @wt860: Well then.. you’re gonna have a bad time…

        • Depends what you're using it for. I've had bad luck with alexpress dongles.
One of them had an antenna sticking out, the antenna was too heavy, and it snapped the PCB (just with it's own weight).
Another one had driver issues in linux, chipset wasn't reporting it's self properly.

    • dont use this if you have other options, if you want to buy as backup or for an old laptop then its fine.

  • Any real life user experiences with this item, I've had a couple of similar (not this brand) melt in the socket

    • Yes I've been using a small Asus wifi dongle for years. It's been fine.

    • I paid full price for it a few weeks ago, it works perfectly for me. 5ghz about 6 meters away from the router, works out of the box in Linux.

  • Wifi 6?

    • No, wifi 7

      LOL

    • +1

It says in the description, ac. Not ax.

  • +12

Wont recommend buying this tbh. I got it free from BPCTech when buying prebuilt. It works temporary okish if you need wifi for your very old laptop. Used it for like 2 months and the signal keep dropping randomly. If you're using PC, i suggest the Fenvi 3000ax usb which you can get on Aliexpress for 25$ (It use 8832cu Realtek chip which can connect 5ghz/6ghz wifi at 2400mbps). If you want reputable brand, there's an Ugreen 1800ax usb on Amazon for around 40-50$ iirc.

    • +1

      Yep, second this comment.

    • Have you had any experience with the Ugreen one? I have the Pix Link usb (similar to Fenvi) and the setup was atrocious, couldn't connect to an active network, but I got it to work. I kinda want something more reliable just in case it breaks again.

      • The Ugreen one is reputable brand so you prolly wont have any problem with the driver. Im using the Fenvi one and yes, the driver could be glitchy at the start (when i turn on pc, sometimes has to re attach the usb). But apart from that, the speed is as fast as advertised and im really satisfied. It never drop once connect and working.

        • Sounds good thanks! The current one I'm using drops out every now and then. I might give the Ugreen one a go.

Available for less on eBay. $17.50 or maybe less if you have a voucher. Have also seen non-branded versions of this for less.

  • is this better than my 3/4 year old nameless 'dualband 3.0 2.4&5G wireless USB adaptor" ?

  • i bought a generic brand from aliexpress years ago for less than $3, and i am still using it on my desktop upstairs, while modem downstairs, no problem at all… working on computer at home most the weekdays. search ozbargain for COMFAST

  • +3

Don’t be fooled by the AC1200 rating, these nano adaptors with tiny integrated antennas can’t reach anywhere near the advertised speeds. BTW this is a pretty old adaptor, I bought this exact same one about 5 years ago for on an old desktop that I used as a HTPC, I could hardly get 50Mbps from my wireless AP which was like 5m away in the adjoining room with one timber framed drywall in between. Only used it for few months then upgraded to an AC 1200 PCIe card, which gave 250Mbps+ at the same location.

So don’t expect blazing speeds with this unless you are right next to your router / AP. For better speeds get an adaptor with larger built in antennas or external antennas. IMO this won’t be much of an upgrade to anything that already has WiFi, but not too bad if you want a cheap way to add WiFi to an old computer for basic stuff.

    • The keyword is "USB" and that's freaking hot

  • +1

i bought one a while ago.
    piece of crap. sloow

  • support WPA3 ?

You can get them locally for $6 aud from msy

According to some reports, this is based on the RTL8812BU chipset. Which is the same as you'll find allegedly in these ones from Aliexpress/Temu for $10-15

    $17.50 on eBay with free shipping .. 😏 .. !!

Also note this is a USB 2.0 adapter.
Even if the wireless link were to reach advertised speeds (which it won't as per above comments), it would be bottlenecked by the bus.

I had something similar and bought a different one with antennas and USB 3.

  • I also had this. Wouldn't push more than about 30-40 mbs in the back of my desktop. Fine for some, but plugging in a proper adapter with external antenna pushed that up nearly 10 fold.

  • -1

Can this be plugged into a wall socket usb port and extend your wifi range further for a stronger signal?

  • +2

I use this on our technician's desk for desktops and laptops that can't connect over their own WiFi or have no WiFi.

Super reliable, and no drivers necessary. One of those devices that "just works", all the time.

    Can highly recommend.

  • +1

I'll stick to the subject of nano receivers. :)

I'm using this aliexpress wifi/bluetooth receiver. It ain't fast (450mbps 5GHz / 150mbps 2.4GHz) but it does the job to connect to a router around 8 mtrs away.

    • thanks for the tip . i got one but when i plug it in , it look like USB storage . did your work out of the box or need to use the mini cd driver ?

      • In my experiance if it shows up as storage first you need to install the driver.

        Annoying - that's why I use the Nano - no drivers :)

  • Useful for an emergency hotspot if the nbn goes down.

  • I paid full price for this recently :(
Great product though, very good connection.

  • Added it to a desktop and now I can use my cheap ass Surface Pro 5 (ozbargain of course) as a great wireless display. Perfect.

    • How?

      • Wireless Display is native in Windows 10 and 11.

        • Yes, but the desktop does not need wifi for that, it can use ethernet too, can't it?

          • @jv: Nope. Wireless display only.

  • Does anyone know if this WiFi usb adapter will pick up my 5g wireless network, and connect to it? My old usb adapter can't detect 5g but it can connect to the standard WiFi network connection.

    • this WiFi usb adapter will pick up my 5g wireless

      🤣

      • Well, will this adapter pick up my 5g connection?

        • 🤣

    • Yes, it has dual-band so you can connect to the 5ghz bandwidth

  • Has anyone tried using this with Linux? How compatible is it?
