How does Cobram Estate compare to Red Island olive oil?

    • +5

I can't speak to Red Island, but Cobra Estate is my preferred Olive Oil. The 'Robust' version has a strong, olive-y flavour if you're into that, alternatively they have a 'Light' version that is much closer to a vegetable oil in terms of flavour.

      • Thanks all. The Red Islands were sold out at my local Coles last week so hoping to get some this week.

    • I prefer as do many. Try it and see!

    • +10

Cobram and red island are owned by the same company. Cobram is the premium brand over Red Island.

    • Happily use either

    • +7

Chef here; Cobram Classic is my go to for good quality, good flavour, reasonably priced (when on sale), supermarket olive oil

      • Yes Chef!

    • Cobram is great, I prefer Australian olives over Spanish, I have it with humus and also use for cooking. I only buy it when 50% off they also have another “ultra premium ” series which I get sometimes when half price

  • +11

750ml olive oil priced at $20 is a disgrace.
I would like to see promotion of such companies be banned on our forum. It hurts!

    • It is the most premium product of that brand, very high quality. It's not the median price or anything

      • +4

While I agree with your statement, the price of cooking oil in general, like many other things I suppose, has gone crazy.

      • Not their most premium, ultra premium is their most premium at $20 for 500ml

      • nah mate still doesn't justify a $20 price tag for what is just a cooking oil. That too widely used one.

        • Why should cooking oils be cheap?

        • "Just a cooking oil" like all cooking oils are similar…

    • +1

Why ? just about all categories have premium or top shelf items.

    • +1

And I would like to see people finally accept that we live in 2023 (shortly 2024), not 2019, and stop going on about how much stuff cost in the past. I don't think either of us are going to get what we want!

      • +7

While i agree with you, I do think the complaint is still valid. No ones income (well at least not mine lol) is rising in proportion to the inflation of groceries. Guestimating, but i reckon some of my food staples have gone up 30-40 percent from just a few years ago, while my weekly income is basically exactly the same.

        • +1

Of course the complaint is valid, but unless they want to use the site to try and organise politically (which I'd fully support) to try and change things, I think the constant moaning (not aimed directly at the person I quoted, just generally!) is tedious.

When I was a child it was always the elderly saying "back in my day we could have got it for 2 shillings and sixpence", now it's "before the global inflationary crisis, things cost less". We all know!

    • Meh, try a niche brand like Joseph, 750ml for $42

  • Damn, I just bought two bottles of the Red Island from this week's Coles sale. $11/L.

This is $13/L for the better product. Get on it!

    • +2

Just curious why it is the 'better' product? Red Island is first cold pressed and organic

      • +1

Cobram Estate classic is scored 83% by Choice whereas Red Island got a 65%.

        • +10

Yeah, but it's only Choice, so it's not super-relevant.

      • +1

Just like not all first press, organic wines are created equal, the same holds for olive oil.

        • -1

now now… don’t bust the bubble premium people live in

      • Higher quality produce, possibly processes.

    • -1

For $10-11/L I would be looking for high quality imported olive oil in 4L+

      • +5

LOL, imported is somehow better? Far more likely to be cut.

        • +3

And more likely to be rancid

      • As other posters said. I would only use extra virgin and Australian.

Every investigation into overseas oils (and honeys) finds them cut with cheap crap, and usually lower quality too.

        • +1

Aus is hardly the olive oil connoisseur, calm down fellas wowee.
          http://www.evooworldranking.org/_EN/top_pais.php
          http://www.evooworldranking.org/_EN/pais_oil.php?pais=Austra…

Majority of people in this thread seem to think Cobram is the best olive oil ever, it's a great Australian oil sure but immediately shutting down imports is just cringe. Like you even knew what olive oil was growing up 😂

          • -1

@BTMoustachio: You can buy Spanish here and it's not particularly nice.

Australian is, and it is reliable in quality and source.

I'm not terribly interested in some European site that coincidentally favours European oils. The base of the site isn't in English. The methodology isn't explained at all.

And lastly, I cook with (or dress salads with) my olive oil - I'm not sure taste tests from people with European palates would be remotely useful to me.

Why do you think Australian tasters favour Cobram over Italian, Spanish, etc oils? Same reason.

  • +3

Anyone got intel on where Aldi source their version of Australian extra virgin olive oil from? Surely it’s being made by Cobram Estate and rebranded?

    • I know. It's very close, but haven't seen the the Olive Grove tins for a while and last week they didn't even have the bottles.

    • +1

Can't speak for Aldi, but the Woolworths one is 100% sourced by Cobram.

  • +4

oil is not half price when the price has bloody doubled. they are playing funny games the bastards.

    • +1

You used to be able to get the tin for $26 regularly!

I wonder why robust flavour wasnt tested. It is so much better!

      • +2

Robust should have been tested instead of light if they could only pick 2. Perhaps Choice wanted Cockatoo to be no: 1

        • +6

Yep, cannot trust the Choice ratings in any way

          • @mickeyjuiceman: They pick different products to test every month, it's difficult to compare.

            • @saveye: I really just mean generally - Choice is not a review source to believe in

        • Depends on what you're using it with I suppose.

For example, I love robust EVOO, with sourdough and olives or rock salt.

Frying eggs with robust oil, not so much as the oil can overwhelm the egg taste.

        • Cockatoo has a winning flavour. Awaiting a deal to be posted here for it

  • Aldi sells 4L for about $30. No one would pay $10 for 750ml unless is a shareholder of the Estate.

Over the years I have read many articles regarding fraudulent spanish and Italian olive oil i.e being cut with inferior olive oil, non olive oil products and even motor oil. The marfia is still heavily involved in the olive oil game so be wary of overseas olive oil…I personally only buy Australian olive oil to be safe and also to support Aussie producers.
Olive oil or nut oils start to oxidate once open and go rancid if not used. Basically these oils start to deteriorate as soon as opened…People who buy the large 3 or 4L tins for economy should be aware that unless you have very large family or a business the oil most likely rancid by the time you get anywhere near the bottom of the tin.
Personally I prefer Cobram for dressing food and buy Red Island and Aldi The olive tree for general use. Dont trust choice trust your own taste buds.

    • do you know whether you should keep the olive oil in the fridge once you open the bottle especially during summer?

      • +3

        @sardines No according to:

        https://www.aboutoliveoil.org/should-olive-oil-be-stored-in-…

Quote: Olive oil changes when stored in the refrigerator. Olive oil will form crystals and start to solidify when subjected to cold temperatures. Once the olive oil is brought back to room temperature the oil will return to its liquid state.

Some research suggests that repeated heating and cooling – such as storing it in the fridge in between uses – puts stress on the oil and doesn’t necessarily extend the shelf life.

Furthermore, it is an inconvenience to bring the olive oil back to room temperature in order to use it.

Storing your olive oil in a cool dark cupboard or pantry is the way to go. Make sure that your olive oil is also tightly capped and that you buy olive oil in bottles that you will use within a few months of opening.

        • thank you!

  • anyone know the olive oil prices at Costco?

  • -1

    Oils ain't Oils….Sol.

    Oh, yes they probably are.

  • -1

Do yourselves a favour and buy the 3 litre tins when they’re on special. Around $45 and much better value per litre.

    • +4

It's cheaper to buy the 750ml Bottles when half-price:

      3L Tin at $45 = $15/L
      750ml Bottle at $10 = $13.33/L

EDIT: According to Price Hipster the 'special price' is $39, so $13/L - slightly cheaper but only available in Classic.

  • Warning: im here at Coles and still full price - need to wait couple of days

    • This is from the new catalogue tomorrow

      • You are correct - I looked for the deal after midnight and thought it was today.
