i have 3 of these around the house, 2 no longer work properly

    • +2

Could it be the Home Mini that was bricked by a recent update? Nest Mini is gen 2. We have one and it is working fine.

    • +6

I have 4 of these plus a hub and hub max and haven't had any break

      • +2

I have 2 minis and 2 hubs. Love them.
Just got 2 more from Officeworks deal for bathroom music and garage music

      • +1

I am using Google Home (not nest mini nor home mini) and have not had it break any time (although it kinda fks up during rebooting of modem if you got a adblocker on network then you have to restart the google home too) otherwise been solid for me

        • Ah, that's why my home mini always says it can't find the WiFi network after I've rebooted the router. I run AdGuard home and all DNS points at it. Makes sense now.

    • Have 4. 2 old and 2 new (1 JBL). 1 old did die and I suspect it is software related. No way to prove it…

    • I've had to factory reset mine once because it wouldn't complete boot.

      Yeah…

    • +4

There was a software update around mid-December that bricked a heap of Gen 1 Google devices…

      https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays…

      • Planned obsolescence…

    • +1

Pull the plug out three times and it'll reset. Then reset it up with your google home app.

  • +2

I have 2, both work fine

  • OOS at all Tassie stores :(….

    • +1

OOS in Wa despite that link showing stock.

  • How do I access it if link is broken?

    • in-Store.

    • I just searched the bunnings site for 'Google', and it came up, even though my local stores are OOS…

  • I have one for give away. Don't use it anymore.

      DM'd!

Anyone else have troubles getting these to play music by voice command?

Most of the time it confirms it will play a song but then it just does nothing. Other times it says it will play something and some random crap comes on.

That's trying with either Spotify / YouTube Premium linked as default…

    • +2

Nope working fine with Spotify Premium.

    • +7

Yea, it's a known issue with all of Google's smart speakers/assistants. They are just getting worse and worse. Many youtubers have commented on the same issue. I say the same thing every morning - "play [playlistname] from spotify", and it works maybe 60% of the time.

      • +4

Not just voice recognition - in my experience, things like predictive text, spellcheck, Google Maps routing (especially dynamic updates) etc are also worse, and there is often a much longer delay in anything that needs cloud processing. These same issues are supported anecdotally by many others.

I suspect we are seeing Google reducing their support for all these products - especially in terms of cloud processing. These are mostly products / services that are not profitable, or consume significant resources to run. There are multiple news stories about how they are refocusing internally towards neural networks / LLMs / "AI". Other companies with Voice assistants (Microsoft, Apple) have also hugely scaled back their services, and are heavily focused on neural networks.

"AI" has the future potential to be quite disruptive in a lot of industries, and even a giant like Google could lose their market position if they end up behind. I suspect that a lot of the cloud resources that were going to supporting unprofitable services, are now being used for training and testing neural networks.

I think we will see capabilities improve in many areas at some point, but the change over period may be a bit rough. While comparatively computationally expensive to train, once trained, neural networks can potentially be a lot more efficient compared to existing architectures, and I imagine that in 10 years we will look back and there will have been a huge amount of change.

Or maybe general intelligence AI project escaped (or was released!) and is currently infiltrating and taking over every possible connected device as it expands its total processing capabilities ;)

      • +7

60% of the time it works every time..

We love you. I was watching that a few hours ago.

          Ron: …That's a formidable scent.

Veronica: It smells like a used diaper with Indian food in it.

    • +1

Happens to me sometimes. Restarting my phone and/or the speaker usually helps. Last resort is restarting the router.

    • +2

Yes, same here, it's started around 2 weeks ago. Have Spotify premium in Turkey, but Google account is in Australia. It's really pissing of everyone in the family. Shady moved speakers to a new "home", resetted them and configured them from scratch. Not sure wth is going on

    • Mine keeps trying to put me on Spotify even though my YouTube premium is connected. Very annoying. Connected a new one from Officeworks price next last week. New one is the only one that wants to connect to few YouTube music and not my premium. Also very annoying πŸ™ƒ

      • +1

I'm sure you've done this, but you should be able to explicitly list YT as the music service and remove Spotify as an option.

But yeah, their voice interpretation is getting worse by the month

        • Yeah removed it and it worked for a little bit. Now broken again. I'm sure they have a deal with Spotify to have a glitch in the system to tempt me πŸ€£πŸ˜‚

          • @Tommohalby: Yeah I'm not surprised honestly. Hopefully google goes back to making these things better

    • +1

Gave up trying to speak a playlist/album/song ages ago. Way too unreliable. Use my phone now to Chromecast what I want to play. Far less frustrating. (Nest minis and Hubs V1s)

      • +2

Google probably will put these to rest and release an AI BARD version

    • That's odd. I have both Spotify/YT linked in Music services. After setting one as default service, I can just say "Hey G, play some music" and it just works

    • In the last few months our Google home hub will play Spotify and then after a few songs just stop. I've tried rebooting the hub, re-installing it through Google home but still the issue continues, its driving me bonkers! Also when we ask to set a timer or remider, she replies "hmm, something went wrong"!

      Any alternatives? Alexa maybe?

I have one Google home hub and a mini that we use out on the patio so not a huge change if there's something better.

  • If these are the 2nd gen they sound great in speaker pairs or groups.

    • How do you tell if the one you have is 2nd gen or 1st gen?

      • +5

The 2nd gen uses AC Adapter, while the 1st gen uses micro usb for power.

        • Ok thank you!

  • +3

They'll be handing these out like energy drinks soon.

    • +3

Never bought one, Telstra points and free from Google. Have about 6.

      • I have a spare one which I got through Telstra points

the one we have in the loungroom and the one we have in the bedroom we got through a tic tac promotion ages ago

      • Have a 1st and 2nd gen, think got them free from Woolies. Pretty sure the Chromecast I got was bundled with one of them too.

  • +2

I feel like with the rose of chatgpt and generate Ai, we are going to see a new wave of smart speakers

  • +3

Already bought a few from the last $18 shipped deal lol

Feel like Google is about to have something new for this???

  • If just use this as BT speaker, is the sound quality loud & clear enough to blast thru the house?

    • +1

It's loud enough for a medium/large size living room at most, and as for clarity, this is not a hifi speaker, voice and music can be heard clearly, but quality wise, it's more similar to a radio speaker.

    • +2

These are actually good for most people. I have setup the home minis as a stereo pair and very happy with them. Good highs and mids. For what that do given their size, they are very good compared to the trash you get at this price range from the likes of laser anko etc. The nest would be a upgrade compared to the mini.

Do try them. I'm listening to them casting from my phone to the pair.

  • Just clarifying, i cannot see any online ads with this price. If I physically go to OW today, they will have tickets adjusted?

    • Very unlikely, seeing as though it's been removed from the Bunnings website

    • They will need some kind of proof that this price it's correct at Bunnings. If anyone from here buys from Bunnings. They can share the receipt. That would be sufficient evidence for Pricebeat. But it also depends on who you will talk at Officeworks. Pricebeat it's not guaranteed since website link it's down.

      • -1

You can go to bunnings site and search for google nest mini and it shows up.
I tried copying the same link but it shows as error.

        • No it isn't - only the charcoal version

      • +2

If the team follow proper procedure , they would check bunning website directly .
If it is not available in bunning website search , Price beat will be rejected.

        *associated with Officework

        • I showed on powerpass and got a price match but you are right, its a trade access app and not for everyone

        • i had an overly enthusiastic officeworks numpty telling me that he wanted to charge me a $6 delivery fee to pricematch bing lee who offer free C&C in Melbourne. I said im happy for you to charge me the $0.00 c&c fee seeing as i've come into your store to buy this and thats what BingLee would charge me to do the same thing. Then i dealt with someone else who wasnt a complete dhead and got the pricebeat. Don't offer a pricebeat gaurantee if you dont want to honour it Officeworks. Pimply staff members remember you are working for a multi billion dollar corporation that doesnt give a llying f about you.

          • @jmc787: Pretty sure that applies to more than half the jobs out there, but if we were in their position price-matching something for under cost price, I imagine you wouldn't put up with it 100% of the time.

      • +2

JB HIFI refused to price match saying its too low and they cannot make loss

        • +3

Really? I didn't know they are allowed to do that.

        • +1

          and they cannot make loss

haha typical JB , fake price match policy

        • +1

You should have gotten behind the computer with him and said "Okay! Let's see what you can do it for then." Lol.

    • Physically went to OW and tried the price match to the Target link, they did not honour stating that their stock is 2nd Gen whereas Target was Gen 1, my argument against was that it says nothing about Generations on either Target ad nor OW. Will need to try and find Bunnings stock, its just hard as there is no online ads with Generations listed.

  • +1

I bought 2 of these in the last deal for $18 each..

The BASS is a massive upgrade from my old home mini's. Also the faster response time from google is great!

    • -1

bought 7 today. I'll spread them all over my house

  • +1

It was $15 at Target a well but out of stock now
    https://www.target.com.au/p/google-nest-mini/64542553

  • +10

Ppl still listing these for + $50 on Facebook and its not negotiable, Firm !! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    • +1

Yep. I think they can get away with it as the retail price gets as high as $70 so they are playing the long game.

    • +2

Facebook marketplace is ridiculous, people ask for rrp for 75% of stuff I look at.

      • +1

Even higher than rrp, I am always looking for a few nest cam to add to my security system, Officework selling it for $199 with warranty, ppl selling the second hand for 200-250 😁, new for up to $350 πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

        • +2

And if you mention it the people they go nuts lol

  • Got Error 404. Sorry, page not found!

  • Powerpass shows $15

    • Can you share a screenshot?

      • No stock anywhere..not sure how to share screenshot

  • -6

ewaste should be free or Bunnings pays you to take

  • -4

Cheaper than doorstops! And as useful too.

  • -7

Just tried in store at Bunnings and the girl said they don't have them for $15 and have never had them at that price

    • +1

If I search Bunnings for 'Google' it comes up, my local is out of stock:
      https://i.postimg.cc/xTGqLJHz/bbbun.jpg

Quite a few stores around the place with stock:
      https://nrby.in/bunnings/0172946

      • Not accurate, there is none at the branch shown in green i checked.

        • +2

I believe the Bunnings stock tracking on their site isn't live, like quite a few stores, so I assume that stuffs up the price-tracking sites…

  • Just did click and collect for one πŸ‘ Had to search for it on the website though

    • Doesn't show on website for me.

Okay, found it on an individual store. It says in-store only.

Assume Yellow means only 1-3 left? Some green have 6-7 but pretty far drive πŸ˜‚

Does Officeworks price match online? It's 5 mins from me.

    • +2
      • +2

I went to JB-HIFI and they refused to price match as price is too low

      • Could you repost with the date visible?

  • strange officeworks staff sleeping? The website still showing $59!

    • Because it's not showing on the Bunnings website

    • +1

They won't watch as it's store only price

  • So if you have 4-6 of these around the house, it plays music through all of them or just 1?

They look like you could have quite a few around the house hidden in corners esp for $15

    • You can group them and play the same music everywhere. Just need good stable wifi.

      • Can you group 1st and 2nd gens together? I tried, it created a group but it would only play music to the speaker that listened to my command.

        • I don't know, all of mine are first gen home mini. I can mix and match any of them and play to the group.

  • Caringbah and Greenacre out of stock even though displaying on that website

  • Same lots of places oos although it shows have 1/2 units

  • +2

Had 3 for some time. These things get dumber with every update. Not buying anymore until they get smarter :p

    • -8

Ba careful, you'll get downvoted by the crowd that will buy anything because it's heavily reduced.
