Got the impression that some ozbargainers say to stay away from Swann and Arlo

  • I prefer Iegeek brand. cheaper & reliable camera.

    • Link? Is the app any goos?

      • yes

      Is reolink any good?

      • I'd had several friends tell me that eufy & reolink are the best budget/midrange options

        • Oh is ee thanks

If folks here say stay away from X or Y, that means stay close by. If they say don't buy it => buy it, if they say buy it=>don't buy it.

    • Is TrollBender being facetious again??? I think the Swann and Arlo are subscription based payment to view cloud videos or am I wrong?

      • What brands are good and no subscription?

        • +1

I think a lot have limited free cloud then if you want longer time frames to view recordings you gotta pay. I did read on here that some ppl use (RTSP) Real-Time Streaming Protocol to capture video to their home network (which is free). Use apps like VLC to view footage.

Some cameras can save to a memory card also.

          • @J B S: Oh i see, thanks mate!

        • +1

Reolink does free live viewing of their cameras as long as you have their app on your phone + connect the DVR to the internet. The cloud sub for this is just for backups - not something I need since I have a NAS anyway

          • @Bottom G: Thanks mate

I assume you can still do RTSP to store aswell like the other user said?

            Oh right

I only have experience using eufy door bell. It allows live view and download to device for free

Oh so you can bypass the cloud subscription by backing up straight to the NAS?

            • @ATTS: Not sure about RTSP but I assume it can. I ordered my set from Boxing Day so still waiting for it to arrive.

Cloud sub is optional; it's got a 2TB HDD (upgradable) but I'm going to sync it to my NAS for redundancy.

              • @Bottom G: Oh i see, thanks!

Are all cameras using starvis 2 now

Or is that only for dashcam

        • This model (Xtreem) does not support RTSP, so as far as I know, you can only use the Swann app, but they give 1 or 2 days free cloud storage (I can't recall) and it comes with a large memory card.

      • Swann and Arlo are subscription based payment to view cloud videos or am I wrong?

Sort of. Swann gives free 1-2 days free cloud storage on clips, while paid subscription gives you 60 days backup.

  • When viewing on the app, does the image appear quickly or does it take 15-20 sec before it appears?

  • You will be lucky if it appears at all

  • I have a 2-pack: they're pretty good, with good battery life, but not for everyone.

    My main criticisms are:
    * wifi seems weak, but I'm in a brick building & haven't done any trial & error
    * for live streaming, they're occasionally slow to 'wake up'
    * I can never enable the siren option because my cameras are triggered by occasional large shadow flashes
    * Limited motion detection settings: only OFF / CLOSE / MED / FAR / MAX plus you can mask selected areas, but no min recording time, so it just stops as soon as motion "stops"

  • I got the Swann 2k wireless camera setup.
was a 4 camera setup, got it all up on the property and setup, then cameras kept dropping out randomly.
Had issues allowing it on the network when the vpn was running, even with port forwarding it just never seemed to play well.

Took it back to the store as they gave me 30days to try it out and see if it suits. ended up exchanging for a 1080 eufy 4 camera wireless setup. The quality of the recordings was better on the Eufy and it just worked with my network, plus the app was a lot more user friendly.

For 24 hour recording I'd have probably put more effort in and tried to get the Swann system to work but all I need where I am is motion detect, the Eufy ones do pretty well at motion detect and during the day only get activated by human motion which is good as my dogs can be roaming and not set them off.

Saying that my dad actually has the wired swann 2 camera system at his and it works well for him.
